Database: Influence of large-scale freestream turbulence on bypass transition in air and organic vapour flows

<p>This is an open-access database of numerical simulations of freestream-turbulence induced transitions of zero-pressure-gradient flat plates boundary layers. The data have been collected at Arts et Metiers Institute of Technology, at DynFluid laboratory, in the period 2021-2024 within the REGAL-ORC project- REal GAs effects on Loss mechanisms of ORC turbine flows, a project in collaboration with FH M&uuml;nster in Germany.</p> <p>Work related to the database is published in Journal of Fluid Mechanics, under the title: "Influence of large-scale freestream turbulence on bypass transition in air and organic vapour flows".&nbsp;The aims of this work was to investigate freestream-turbulence induced transitions, in particular under relatively large integral length scale, of air and organic vapors boundary layers.</p> <p>This version contains evolutions of averaged quantities in the streamwise direction, along with profiles and spectra in the boundary layer for all the different simulations performed. This database is supplemented with python codes to read the data and descriptions of the data in the headers and README files.</p>

Included are spatial spectra normalized with the Kolmogorov scale and viscosity. The collapse of the normalized spectra&nbsp;is indicative of the small-scale universality predicted by Kolmogorov. The data are taken from turbulent and transitional pipe flows at different Re and different positions from the wall from both experiments and simulations (experiments are at the centerline only).</p>

Data from: Geographic population structure of the African malaria vector Anopheles gambiae suggests a role for the forest-savannah biome transition as a barrier to gene flow

The primary Afrotropical malaria mosquito vector Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto has a complex population structure. In western Africa, this species is split into two molecular forms and displays local and regional variation in chromosomal arrangements and behaviours. To investigate patterns of macro-geographic population substructure, 25 An. gambiae samples from 12 African countries were genotyped at 13 microsatellite loci. This analysis detected the presence of additional population structuring, with the M-form being subdivided into distinct west, central and southern African genetic clusters. These clusters are coincident with the central African rainforest belt and northern and southern savannah biomes, which suggests restrictions to gene flow associated with the transition between these biomes. By contrast geographically patterned population substructure appears much weaker within the S-form.

Data from: Speciation with gene flow and the genetics of habitat transitions

Whether speciation can advance to completion in the face of initially high levels of gene flow is a very controversial topic in evolutionary biology. Extensive gene exchange is generally considered to homogenize populations and counteract divergence. Moreover, the role of introgressive hybridization in evolution remains largely unexplored in animals, particularly in freshwater zooplankton in which allopatric speciation is considered to be the norm. Our work investigates the genetic structure of two young ecological species: the pond species, Daphnia pulex and the lake species, Daphnia pulicaria. Phylogenetic and population genetics analyses were conducted on mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase 5 (ND5) gene, the nuclear Lactate dehydrogenase (Ldh) gene, and 21 nuclear microsatellite markers in 416 individuals from habitats with various degrees of permanence. The strong and consistent phylogenetic discordance between nuclear and mitochondrial markers suggests a complex evolutionary history of multiple independent habitat transition events that involved hybridization and introgression between lake and pond Daphnia. On the other hand, the low level of contemporary gene flow between adjacent populations indicates the presence of effective habitat isolating barriers. The Daphnia system provides strong evidence for a divergence-with-gene flow speciation model that involves multiple habitat transition events.

Data from: Transitions in the flow patterns and aerodynamic characteristics of the flow around staggered rows of cylinders

A two-dimensional numerical study of flow across rows of identical square cylinders arranged in staggered fashion is carried out. This study will unreveal complex flow physics depending upon the Reynolds number (Re) and gap spacing (g) between the cylinders. The combined effect of Reynolds number and gap spacing on the flow physics around staggered rows of cylinders are numerically studied for 20 ≤ Re ≤ 140 and 1 ≤ g ≤ 6. We use the lattice Boltzmann method for numerical computations. It is found that with increase in gap spacing between the cylinders the critical Reynolds number for the onset of vortex shedding also increases. We observed a strong effect of Reynolds number at g = 2 and 4. Secondary cylinder interaction frequency disappears for large Reynolds number at g = 6 and 5 and the flow around cylinders are fully dominated by the primary vortex shedding frequency. This ensures that at large gap spacing with an increase in the Reynolds number the wakes interaction between and behind the cylinders is weaken. Furthermore, it also ensures that the wake interaction behind the cylinders is strongly influenced by the jets in the gap spacing between the cylinders. We also found that g = 2 is the critical gap spacing for flow across rows of staggered square cylinders for the considered range of Reynolds number. Depending on the Reynolds number we observed; synchronous, quasi-periodic-I, quasi-periodic-II, and chaotic flow patterns. In synchronous flow pattern, an in-phase and anti-phase characteristics of consecutive cylinders has been observed. The important physical parameters are also analyzed and discussed in detail.
