The internal carotid arteries emerge on the internal floor of the braincase after tunneling through the basicranial cartilage, and diverge to form a posterolaterally curving branch, which further diverges into the efferent pseudobranchial and ophthalmic arteries external to the cartilage, and an anterolaterally curving branch, the optic artery, which exits through the optic foramen.
