Populist attitudes and other socio-political views and psychological traits of the UK population

This dataset is the result of an original survey designed by an interdisciplinary team of researchers from National Universtity of Distance Education (UNED), University of Zaragoza, University of Córdoba and University of Valencia. The goal of the survey was to better understand the relationship between populist attitudes and relevant socio-political and psychology items and indexes. The UK was selected as case study given the lack of similar studies in this country and the relevance of the data to better understand the political context that had been heavily impacted by the Brexit referendum and proces of separation from the European Union. The survey was theoretically informed and included among others: <ul> <li>Populism, Elitism and Pluralism items by Akkerman et al. (2014) (14 items)</li> <li>New items design for a new Multidimensional Scale of Populist Attitudes (37 items) (Olivas Osuna 2021; Olivas Osuna et al. 2024; Olivas Osuna et al. forthcoming)</li> <li>Conspiracy Beliefs items (8 items) (Bruder et al. 2013; Brotherton et al. 2013)</li> <li>Social alienation index (6 items) (Bélanger et al. 2019)</li> <li>Justification of violence index (6 items) (Bélanger et al. 2019)</li> <li>Radicalised network (3 items)(Moyano 2011)</li> <li>Meaning in life (presence and search)(4 items)(Steger et al. 2006)</li> <li>Bordering attitudes  (6 items)(Olivas Osuna et al. forthcoming)</li> <li>Endorsement for political parties</li> <li>Items reflecting level of agreement with the main slogans and arguments used by British Eurosceptics (11 items)</li> <li>Items on satisfaction with democracy and importance of democracy and with illiberal views (ESS)</li> <li>Left-right ideological self-placement</li> <li>Socio-demographic variables (age, religion, education, etc.)</li> </ul> Fieldwork was conducted between 17 November and 4 December 2020. Participants were recruited following socio-demographic representativity criteria via the online platform Prolific. Survey were collected via Google Forms (Survey title: Political and social views in the UK). Shapefile of administrative boundaries in Glasgow, UK, around 1920

This dataset consists of a shapefile of administrative boundaries (municipal wards) in Glasgow around 1920, based on 'Map of the City of Glasgow shewing Parliamentary Divisions as fixed in 1918, and Municipal Wards as fixedin 1920'. The map is held in the Glasgow City Archives, reference DTC/13/98. Shapefile construction was undertaken as described in the related article: Angelopoulos, K., Stewart, G. and Mancy, R. Local infectious disease experience influences vaccine refusal rates: a natural experiment. Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. DOI: 10.1098/rspb.2022.1986. The attributes which are included in the shapefile are Ward_Num (municipal ward number) and Ward_Name (municipal ward name). Reuse streams at UK waste facilities (HWRCs)

<div> The UK recycles thousands of working and repairable devices every week at its waste facilities. But fixing or reusing them instead could reduce waste, lower emissions and save households money.  Through a citizen science project, we investigated what reuse streams are currently available at household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs) and the challenges of making reuse more widely available. This dataset contains records for all HWRCs across the UK and details of any publicly-communicated reuse streams at each site. It is accompanied by a narrative report. Last updated October 2024. </div>

UK Hansard 1935-2014

UK Hansard 1935-2014 The "uk_hansard_1935_2014_BvW_2022.tsv" is a metadata enriched version of the Hansard corpus. It is one of the outputs from <a href="https://www.arts.kuleuven.be/mosa/english/staff/00101799">Betto van Waarden</a>'s Marie Skłodowska-Curie project "Presenting Parliament: Parliamentarians’ visions of the communication and role of parliament within the mediated democracies of Britain, Belgium and the Netherlands, 1844-1995 ". This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 897761. The project has been executed in collaboration with <a href="https://www.medarbetarwebben.lu.se/lucat/user/db5363013678aa825cd50841818af81f">Mathias Johansson</a> from the <a href="https://projekt.ht.lu.se/digitalhistory/">DigitalHistory@Lund</a> platform, Lund University Base corpora The attached file is an agglomeration of two preexisting versions of the UK Hansard corpus: <a href="https://www.politicalmashup.nl/">Political Mashup</a>, provided to us by <a href="https://www.turing.ac.uk/people/researchers/kaspar-beelen">Kaspar Beelen</a> and a .tsv file we received from <a href="https://munkschool.utoronto.ca/person/ludovic-rheault">Ludovic Rheault</a> which itself is based on the Political Mashup corpus. This corpus is based on the Rheault version and is reproduced with his written permission. The original corpus contained the following columns: <ul> <li>cabinet</li> <li>function</li> <li>parliament</li> <li>party</li> <li>party_in_power</li> <li>speaker_id</li> <li>speech_id</li> <li>speech_text</li> <li>topic</li> <li>year</li> </ul> To which we have added the following columns: <ul> <li>date</li> <li>times_in_house</li> <li>seniority</li> <li>district</li> <li>district_class</li> </ul> Changed the 'year' column to 'date' as it contained the ISO8061-formatted date, leaving only the year in the 'year' column Career In the Political Mashup data there is information about which offices each speaker has held and using this data we have calculated how many terms a speaker has held office at the time of a speech times_in_house. From this we derived a column we call seniority: speakers that have been in office at most one time before the current parliament/round is classified as a junior - everyone else as a senior. Districts By cross referencing the speaker_ids against the Political Mashup we have extracted which district each speaker was representing. We have then mapped these districts against a classification of UK districts (<a href="https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-8322/">Baker, 2018</a>, accessed on 2021-07-12) that uses six classes which we reduced to three classes for simplicity's sake: <table> <thead> <tr> <th>Original</th> <th>Reduced</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td>Core City Other City </td> <td>city</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Large Town Medium Town </td> <td>town</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Small Town Village or Smaller </td> <td>village</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> Mapping districts to one of the three classes was mostly done automatically by matching district names against the list, and districts that have split or merged over time were processed manually.
