The Curated Courier: Digital Text Corpora from the UNESCO Courier (1948–2020)

<p>Founded in 1948 as the official magazine of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, <i>The UNESCO Courier</i> represents an extraordinary resource for research on global themes in the humanities. The complete <a href="https://en.unesco.org/courier/archives">archive of the magazine</a> is available in PDF form through UNESCO.&nbsp;These files make it possible for users anywhere to read individual issues, but it does not allow for full-text searching, much less any of the computational text analysis methods that have recently made important advances in humanities research.</p><p>The Curated Courier 1.0 is a package of digital text corpora, text analysis tools, and supplementary materials that makes the complete archive of <i>The UNESCO Courier</i> from 1948 to 2020 machine-readable, accessible, and reusable for digital text analysis.&nbsp;</p><p>Here on Zenodo we publish two <i>Courier</i> corpora. The first corpus (curated_courier_article_corpus) consists of the texts of all articles published in the English-language edition of <i>The UNESCO Courier</i> between 1948 and 2020. For this corpus we have extracted and reconstructed&nbsp;the complete&nbsp;text of all articles, for example by pulling together non-contiguous pages where necessary and by removing non-article text&nbsp;(masthead, photo captions, letters to the editor, and so on). We have linked each article&nbsp;to a comprehensive curated metadata index, included in the download (document_index.csv).</p><p>The second corpus&nbsp;(curated_issues) compiles&nbsp;the complete text of all <i>Courier</i> issues (English-language edition), 1948-2020. To prepare this corpus we extracted text from <a href="https://en.unesco.org/courier/archives">the PDFs that UNESCO has made available</a>, used multiple modes of OCR, and rendered each issue as a simple text file. Our test of the OCR quality finds an average&nbsp;error rate of 0.7 %, which should be considered good quality.</p><p>Working data from the process can be found in our <a href="https://github.com/inidun/tagged_courier">GitHub repository "tagged Courier."</a> The products, text analysis tools, and additional documentation are in the <a href="https://github.com/inidun/curated_courier">repository "Curated Courier."</a></p><p>The text of <i>The UNESCO Courier</i> is&nbsp;<a href="https://courier.unesco.org/en/about">available in Open Access</a> under the Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 IGO (CC-BY-SA 3.0 IGO) license, in the context of <a href="https://en.unesco.org/open-access/">UNESCO's open access publications policy</a>. Zoning of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in Europe

<p>UNESCO biosphere reserves are committed to a unique concept of sustainable land use deploying gradients of land use intensity from strict nature conservation in core zones to socio-culturally sustainable activity in transition areas. Cross-regional research on benefits and trade-offs that may arise from the management of biosphere reserves is one important goal of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere programme. So far such research has been challenging due to the lack of a comprehensive spatial dataset covering the different zones reflecting different management restrictions of biosphere reserves. As aimed for in the Lima action plan, analyses of biosphere reserves as functioning models for working landscapes, can give relevant insights into their potential to balance biodiversity and ecosystem service provision. To fill this gap, we present a spatial dataset of European biosphere reserves (BRs) including their zones. The dataset can serve as a basis for analysing the effect of the zoning concept in order to fulfill the different functions that are specified by the Man and Biosphere programme. Belvedere in UNESCO site - Piedmont Landscape and Literary Park for SPOTIT tool

<p>The UNESCO World Heritage Site &#39;Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato&#39; is active in raising awareness among local institutions and residents about the quality of the landscape and the values that the recognition is promoting in the area. In 2021, the Associazione per il Patrimonio dei Paesaggi Vitivinicoli di Langhe-Roero e Monferrato promoted the creation of six viewpoints for a reading of the landscape according to UNESCO&#39;s interpretative keys, aimed at the widest possible range of users and in particular at the flow of tourists in order to get to know and appreciate a landscape recognised as a world heritage site. The viewpoints were financed by the Piedmont Region to six municipalities.</p> <p>In the framework of the SPOT H2020 project and Piedmont Landscape and Literary Parks, the cartography operable through GIS software is provided.</p>

Data from: Participatory mapping reveals biocultural and nature values in the shared landscape of a Nordic UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

<p>1. Making the right decisions for sustainable development requires sound knowledge of the values and spatial distribution of the services co-produced by ecosystems and people. UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere programme and associated Biosphere Reserves (BRs) are key learning sites or model regions for sustainable development providing key entry points for transdisciplinary work on sustainable development. However, there is limited research exploring spatial distribution of socio-cultural Ecosystem Service (ES) values in BRs and how those values vary according to the BR zonation.</p> <p>2. We used a transdisciplinary approach to design and implement a public participation geographic information systems (PPGIS) survey in a recently designated BR to (i) asses the spatial distribution of ES values in the different zones, (ii) identify hotspots of ES values, (iii) identify spatial bundles of ES values, and (iv) assess the social-ecological characteristics that determine the distribution of those values.</p> <p>3. We found that stakeholders identify high biocultural ES values, mapping predominantly places for outdoor recreation, biodiversity, agricultural products, and cultural heritage. Buffer zones had high agricultural and cultural heritage values while extractive values were largely absent from cores zones. We identified five spatial ES-value bundles highlighting distinct places important for ES values related to: 'multifunctional landscapes' located close to settlements, 'cultural landscapes' associated with agricultural land, 'wild animal resources' along the coastlines, 'outdoor recreation and biodiversity' and 'passive cultural values' widely distributed in high and moderately populated areas.</p> <p>4. Accessibility to nature was highly important for ES values and people highly value nature close to where they live. We show the importance of biocultural values in the region, and agricultural landscapes were highly valued for multiple ES values beyond agricultural products alone.</p> <p>5. We show that BRs have become places that link cultural heritage, agricultural, and biodiversity values in multifunctional landscapes. We put our findings into the local context and suggest how they can inform land-use planning and management through policies aimed at maintaining key agricultural landscapes that provide social-ecological resilience. Additionally, we discuss the value of our study for the wider BR network and how similar work can contribute to monitoring of BR implementation.</p>

Data from: Zoning has little impact on the seasonal diel activity and distribution patterns of wild boar (Sus scrofa) in an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Understanding the spatio‐temporal distribution of ungulates is important for effective wildlife management, particularly for economically and ecologically important species such as wild boar (</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span><em>Sus scrofa</em><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>). Wild boars are generally considered to exhibit substantial behavioral flexibility, but it is unclear how their behavior varies across different conservation management regimes and levels of human pressure. To analyze if and how wild boars adjust their space use or their temporal niche, we surveyed wild boars across the core and buffer zones (collectively referred to as the conservation zone) and the transition zone of a biosphere reserve. These zones represent low and high levels of human pressure, respectively. Specifically, we employed a network of 53 camera traps distributed in the Schaalsee UNESCO Biosphere Reserve over a 14‐month period (19,062 trap nights) and estimated circadian activity patterns, diel activity levels, and occupancy of wild boars in both zones. To account for differences in environmental conditions and day length, we estimated these parameters separately for seven 2‐month periods. Our results showed that the wild boars were primarily nocturnal, with diurnal activity occurring dominantly during the summer months. The diel activity patterns in the two zones were very similar overall, although the wild boars were slightly less active in the transition zone than in the conservation zone. Overall, this result suggests that different conservation management regimes (in this case, the zoning of a biosphere reserve) have little impact on wild boar behavior. Harlech Castle Wales - UNESCO World Heritage

Harlech Castle (Welsh: Castell Harlech), located in Harlech, Gwynedd, Wales, is a medieval fortification, constructed atop a spur of rock close to the Irish Sea. It was built by Edward I during his invasion of Wales between 1282 and 1289. UNESCO considers Harlech to be one of "the finest examples of late 13th century and early 14th century military architecture in Europe", and it is classed as a World Heritage site. The fortification is built of local stone and concentric in design, featuring a massive gatehouse that probably once provided high-status accommodation for the castle constable and visiting dignitaries.
