Some parts of UV light are dangerous for our skin, but if well-managed UV is safe to use.
Recently, new types of light sources are producing UV light powers 25,000 times more intense than produced by the sun. Low-cost test rig for characterization of photocatalytic two dimensional materials using photonically sized UV-A LED light sources

In the presented studies, a system for the characterization of two-dimensional photocatalysts was developed and tested. In the system, reference substances can be studied online with regard to their degradability and adsorption on photocatalytic materials. In order to perform accurate calculations of the quantum and photon efficiency of the catalysts, the LED arrays used were adjusted in their spacing by simulations so that a homogeneous light field is imaged on the catalysts. The system was tested with respect to measurement accuracy and reproducibility and the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue, methyl orange and rhodamine B was investigated. Exemplarily, the reaction kinetics, photolysis and adsorption on the tested photocatalysts were determined for these compounds and the calculation was presented in detail. The exact construction plans and circuits as well as the sensors and their programming are presented in detail and should encourage other scientists to replicate the experimental setup, since especially in the field of photocatalysis research, often the results of publications cannot be compared with each other.

Data from: Pathogen reduction of monkeypox virus in plasma and whole blood using riboflavin and UV light

Background

Monkeypox virus has recently emerged from endemic foci in Africa and, to date, several hundred human infections have been reported from at least 16 non-African countries. The detection of virus in skin lesions, blood, semen, and saliva of infected patients with monkeypox infections raises the potential for disease transmission via routes that have not been previously documented, including by blood and plasma transfusions. Methods for protecting the blood supply against the threats of newly emerging disease agents exist and include Pathogen Reduction Technologies (PRT) which utilize photochemical treatment processes to inactivate pathogens in blood while preserving the integrity of plasma and cellular components. Such methods have been employed broadly for over 15 years, but effectiveness of these methods under routine use conditions against monkeypox virus has not been reported.

Results

The levels of spiked virus present in whole blood and plasma samples exceeded 103 infectious particles per dose, corresponding to greater than 105 DNA copies per mL. Treatment of whole blood and plasma units under standard operating procedures for the Mirasol PRT System resulted in complete inactivation of infectivity to the limits of detection. This is equivalent to a reduction of ≥ 2.86 +/- 0.73 log10 pfu/mL of infectivity in whole blood and ≥ 3.47 +/-0.19 log10 pfu/mL of infectivity in plasma under standard operating conditions for those products.

Conclusion

Based on this data and corresponding studies on infectivity in patients with monkeypox infections, use of Mirasol PRT would be expected to significantly reduce the risk of transfusion transmission of monkeypox.

Oviposition behaviour is not affected by ultraviolet light in a butterfly with sexually-dimorphic expression of a UV-sensitive opsin

Animal vision is important for mediating multiple complex behaviours. In Heliconius butterflies, vision guides fundamental behaviours such as oviposition, foraging and mate choice. Colour vision in Heliconius involves ultraviolet (UV), blue and long- wavelength sensitive photoreceptors (opsins). Additionally, Heliconius possess a duplicated UV opsin, and its expression varies widely within the genus. In Heliconius erato, opsin expression is sexually dimorphic; only females express both UV-sensitive opsins, enabling UV wavelength discrimination. However, the selective pressures responsible for sex-specific differences in opsin expression and visual perception remain unresolved. Female Heliconius invest heavily in finding suitable hostplants for oviposition, a behaviour heavily dependent on visual cues. Here, we tested the hypothesis that UV vision is important for oviposition in H. erato and Heliconius himera females by manipulating the availability of UV in behavioural experiments under natural conditions. Our results indicate that UV does not influence the number of oviposition attempts or eggs laid, and the hostplant, Passiflora punctata, does not reflect UV wavelengths. Models of H. erato female vision suggest only minimal stimulation of the UV opsins. Overall, these findings suggest that UV wavelengths do not directly affect the ability of Heliconius females to find suitable oviposition sites. Alternatively, UV discrimination could be used in the context of foraging or mate choice, but this remains to be tested.
