Experimental data from the PhD thesis "Certifying Planning Systems: Witnesses for Unsolvability"

The zipfile contains the raw experiment data used in the PhD thesis "Certifying Planning Systems: Witnesses for Unsolvability". It is split in three folders:

1) combined: contains the condensed data of all experiments as a json-file named properties, as well as a html page reporting the most important attributes

2+3) downward and fd-hc-refinement: contains the raw data of all experiments run with certifying-downward/certifying-fd-hc-refinement, as well as a json-file each for the condensed data in the *-eval directory. The json-file from 1) is a combination of those two json-files.

Furthermore, it contains the downward-lab (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.790461) scripts used for generating the experiments, showing with which configurations and limits the experiments were run.

Unsolvable PDDL Benchmarks

Collection of unsolvable planning task from (a) the benchmarks used in the Unsolvability IPC 2016 (https://unsolve-ipc.eng.unimelb.edu.au) and (b) http://fai.cs.uni-saarland.de/downloads/unsat-benchmarks.tar.bz2. All solvable problems from the original benchmarks are removed. Some domains and problems overlapped: The problems in the two directories bottleneck and unsat-pegsol-strips from (b) are identical to the ones in bottleneck and pegsol from (a) and thus omitted. We assume that problems in folders unsat-nomystery, unsat-rovers and unsat-tpp from (b) also overlap with those in folders over-nomystery, over-rovers and over-tpp from (a), but kept all problems from those folders.

Kangaroos display gazing and gaze alternations during an unsolvable problem task

Domestication is generally assumed to have resulted in enhanced communication abilities between non-primate mammals and humans, although the number of species studied is very limited (e.g. cats, Felis catus; dogs, Canis familiaris; wolves, Canis lupus; goats, Capra hircus; horses, Equus caballus). In species without hands for pointing, gazing at humans when dealing with inaccessible food during an unsolvable task, and in particular gaze alternations between a human and the unsolvable task (considered forms of showing), are often interpreted as attempts at referential intentional communication. We report that kangaroos, marsupial mammals that have never been domesticated, actively gazed at an experimenter during an unsolvable problem task (10/11 kangaroos tested), thus challenging the notion that this behavior results from domestication. Nine of the ten kangaroos additionally showed gaze alternations between the unsolvable task and experimenter. We propose that the potential occurrence of these behaviors displayed towards humans has been underestimated, owing to a narrow focus on domestic animals, as well as a more general eutherian research bias.
