Atmospheric Wet Deposition in Urban and Suburban Sites Across the United States

Atmospheric Environment, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.atmosenv.2023.119783 This study investigated long-term trends in atmospheric wet deposition of nitrogen (ammonium and nitrate), sulfate, cations, and chloride for urban and suburban sites in the U.S. using data from the National Atmospheric Deposition Program and assessed whether urban NADP sites are hotspots for atmospheric wet deposition. To examine potential impacts of urbanization on atmospheric wet deposition, percent impervious surface area and population density data were extracted from Google Earth Engine. Data in Support of Effects of Urbanization and Forest Fragmentation on Atmospheric Nitrogen Inputs and Ambient Nitrogen Oxide and Ozone Concentrations in Mixed Temperate Forests.

Urban ecosystems around the globe experience greater atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition compared to rural areas and are particularly vulnerable to fragmentation due to land-use change. However, while the influences of urbanization and forest fragmentation on atmospheric inputs to temperate forests have been determined separately, the combined effects of the two changes on temperate forest ecosystems have yet to be assessed. To investigate these combined effects, we deployed throughfall collectors to measure atmospheric N inputs and passive samplers to measure nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ozone (O3) throughout the 2018 and 2019 growing seasons in seven temperate forest sites along an urbanization gradient from Boston to central Massachusetts. We found a positive relationship between the amount of impervious surface area surrounding each site (% ISA) and throughfall nitrate (NO3-) inputs at the forest edge, with urban edge NO3- inputs nearly double the rate at rural edge sites. There were higher rates of NO3- inputs in the rural forest interior than edge sites. Urban sites experienced significantly higher concentrations of NOx and O3 both in the interior and at the edge compared to rural sites. Atmospheric N inputs were significantly elevated in the early (May-July) compared to the late (August-November) growing season and concentrations of NOx and O3 were also elevated in the mid-growing season (June-September). Our results demonstrate that together, urbanization and forest fragmentation lead to greater rates of atmospheric N inputs and ambient pollutant concentrations of NOx and O3 in temperate forests of the northeastern U.S.

Bulk atmospheric deposition data along an agricultural-to-urban transect, central Ohio, 2021-2022

As precipitation acidity in the United States has decreased dramatically over the past forty years, new questions have emerged about the role of base cations and nitrogen (N) species in regulating precipitation pH. To address these questions, we studied precipitation chemistry in Ohio, a state with high N deposition and a mix of urban, industrial, and agricultural land use. This dataset contains precipitation chemistry and the flux of particulate matter collected at four sites along an agricultural-urban transect in central Ohio over the summers of 2021 and 2022. Samples were collected weekly from three or five replicate passive bulk deposition collectors at each site. In the lab, we filtered the samples and calculated the flux of total particulate matter. Liquid samples were measured for pH, nitrate, ammonium, and major ions. This dataset is complete and will not be added to in the future.

<p>The hygroscopicity of humic-like substances (HULIS) from Beijing aerosols and its relationship with the degrees of oxygenation and sources were investigated. The dataset in the Excel sheet contains the measured hygroscopicity parameter (<em>&kappa;</em>), elemental ratios, and estimated intrinsic<em> &kappa;</em> for HULIS, and the mass-based source contributions to HULIS, the <em>&kappa;</em> estimated for total organic aerosol and the high-polarity fraction of water-soluble organic matter, and other data for Zhou et al. in Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres. Evaluation of a Partector Pro for atmospheric size distribution and number concentration measurements at an urban background site

<p>Number size distributions, total number concentrations and mean particle sizes have been measured for 70 days at an urban background site in M&uuml;lheim-Styrum, Germany with a handheld Partector Pro and a TSI mobility particle size spectrometer (MPSS). The aim of the study was to evaluate the performance of the Partecor Pro against the MPSS. The results show that the size distributions, measured with the Partector Pro agree with the MPSS mostly within &plusmn;25% for particle sizes below 113.5&nbsp;nm, whereas higher, systematic differences were observed for larger particles. The measurement accuracy was shown to be dependent on the geometric mean diameter and the geometric standard deviation of the aerosol. Best results were found for the most abundant size distributions with geometric mean particle diameters &ge;30&nbsp;nm and geometric standard deviations larger than 1.8. The total number concentration, measured by the Partector Pro was found to be in excellent agreement with the MPSS with a slope of the linear fit of 0.9977 and a regression coefficient of R&sup2;&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.9956. The agreement of the geometric mean particle diameter, determined with the Partector Pro and the MPSS was good, but moderately dependent on the particle size distribution. For mean particle sizes between 20&nbsp;nm and 50&nbsp;nm, the bias was within &plusmn;15%. Higher deviations of up to 30% were observed when the geometric mean particle sizes exceeded 70&nbsp;nm and when the geometric standard deviations exceeded approximately 2.7.</p>

Atmospheric deposition sampling across an urban gradient, using passive resin collectors

One of the "Grand Challenges" for environmental biology is to increase understanding of human perturbations of biogeochemical cycles (NRC 2001). One route for these perturbations to be affected is through the transfer of pollutants from the atmosphere to the biosphere. As part of the Ecosystem Response to Material Deposition from the Urban Atmosphere (N. B. Grimm, PD) study, CAP-LTER scientists are investigating the fate of anthropogenic organic C (oC) and inorganic nitrogen (iN) deposition and their effects on ecosystem functioning in unmanaged deserts within and near cities. We hypothesize that biogeochemical cycling will be qualitatively different in urban environments due to large inputs of biologically available C and N from the atmosphere. As part of this project, we will deploy filter banks equipped with size-selective aerosol inlets to collect particulate oC and iN compounds in the urban atmosphere. In order to estimate fluxes of these nutrients from the concentration measurements, we plan to deploy weather stations and to analyze these data to estimate deposition rates.
