Riparian Evapotranspiration (ET) Study (SEON) from the Middle Rio Grande River Bosque, New Mexico (1999-2011 ): Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD) Data
We hypothesized that flooding and invasions of non-native species would strongly impact ecosystem water use. Our objectives were to measure and compare water use of native (Rio Grande cottonwood, Populus deltoides ssp. wizleni) and non-native (saltcedar, Tamarix chinensis, Russian olive, Eleagnus angustifolia) vegetation and to evaluate how water use is affected by climatic variability resulting in high river flows and flooding as well as drought conditions and deep water tables. Eddy covariance flux towers to measure ET and shallow wells to monitor water tables were instrumented in 1999. Active sites in their second decade of monitoring include a xeroriparian, non-flooding salt cedar woodland within Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge and a dense, monotypic salt cedar stand at Bosque del Apache NWR, which is subject to flood pulses associated with high river flows.

<p>Global daily maximum Vapour Pressure Deficit (VPD) for 1979-2020 at 0.25 deg resolution. This data supports the analysis in "Observed increases in extreme fire weather driven by atmospheric humidity and temperature", Jain et al. 2021, accepted for publication in Nature Climate Change.</p> <p>VPD was calculated using the hourly ERA5 2m temperature and 2m dewpoint temperature using the Alduchov and Eskridge (1996) approximation as implemented in the R package ‘bigleaf’ (Knauer et al. 2018).</p> <p>Variables were processed using inputs from the ERA5 Reanalysis (hourly surface data from 1979–2020, available from <a href="https://cds.climate.copernicus.eu/cdsapp#!/dataset/reanalysis-era5-single-levels?tab=overview">https://cds.climate.copernicus.eu/cdsapp#!/dataset/reanalysis-era5-single-levels?tab=overview</a>). </p> <p>References</p> <p>Alduchov, O. CONUS VPD and soil moisture thresholds for suboptimal vegetation function
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>The dataset contains minimum and maximum vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and soil moisture parameters that define the range of suboptimal vegetation function (i.e., between uninhibited photosynthesis and complete shutdown). </span>The ranges were estimated using the Dynamic Canopy Biophysical Properties model (DCBP; Lowman & Barros 2018), which consists of a phenology forecasting model based on the growing season index (GSI), which provides a unitless measure of the potential phenologic state of vegetation based on the concurrent meteorological conditions (Jolly et al. 2005).</p>
