Supporting information - A value creation model from science-society interconnections: Components and archetypes

<p>Data protocol and datasets used for the study entitled &#39;A value creation model from science-society interconnections: Components and archetypes&#39;.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Abstract of the paper:</strong></p> <p>The interplay between science and society takes place through a wide range of intertwined relationships and mutual influences that shape each other and facilitate continuous knowledge flows. Stylised consequentialist perspectives on valuable knowledge moving from public science to society in linear and recursive pathways, whilst informative, cannot fully capture the broad spectrum of value creation possibilities. As an alternative we experiment with an approach that gathers together diverse science-society interconnections and reciprocal research-related knowledge processes that can generate valorisation. Our approach to value creation attempts to incorporate multiple facets, directions and dynamics in which constellations of scientific and societal actors generate value from research. The paper develops a conceptual model based on a set of nine value components derived from four key research-related knowledge processes: production, translation, communication, and utilization. The paper conducts an exploratory empirical study to investigate whether a set of archetypes can be discerned among these components that structure science-society interconnections. We explore how such archetypes vary between major scientific fields. Each archetype is overlaid on a research topic map, with our results showing that different archetypes correspond to distinctive topic areas. The paper finishes by discussing the significance and limitations of our results and the potential of both our model and our empirical approach for further research.</p>

The Practical Value of Information Literacy in the Workplace

<p>This video was produced for an information literacy course at the University of Ottawa&#39;s &Eacute;cole School of Information Studies (&Eacute;SIS). It is shared as an open education resource to be (re)used to teach viewers about the value of information literacy in the workplace. The video aims to briefly outline workplace literacy expectations for novice job seekers wanting to increase their employability. The video&rsquo;s objective is to make (under)graduate students aware of the key information literacy skills that employers are looking for in new hires, and provide some suggested resources to improve or acquire these skills. The video is meant to be a starting point to build on students&#39; awareness of information literacy skills and how these&nbsp;skills will be valuable in the workplace. Clinical usefulness of library and information services in Japan: The detailed use and value of information in clinical settings

<p>Abstract</p> <p><strong>Objectives</strong></p> <p>Considering that there is a lack of evidence regarding the contribution of library and information services to evidence-based medicine in actual clinical practice in Japan, the purpose of the study is to explore the current status of use and value of library and information services in clinical settings to examine the usefulness of information in implementing evidence-based medicine (EBM) into practice.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong></p> <p>A Web-based survey was conducted at seven sites (hospitals with 300&ndash;1,200 beds) and interviews conducted at five sites to investigate information behavior among health professionals (physicians, residents, and nurses) in 2016, replicating the Value Study carried out in the United States in 2010 and 2011. Using a critical incident technique, respondents answered questions about their information topics, information resources used, search location, access points, and evaluation of the information.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong></p> <p>Analysis from 598 valid responses (275 physicians, 55 residents, and 268 nurses) revealed the characteristics of information use and recognition of the value of information. Physicians and residents showed their information needs regarding clinical care using PubMed (80.4%, 65.5%), Ichushi-Web (61.8%, 63.6%), and UpToDate (40.4%, 65.5%). While physicians rely more on electronic journals (37.8%), residents use more hybrid resources including Japanese print books (38.2%) and online books (30.9% for Japanese, 32.7% for English) to confirm their knowledge. Nurses need more information close to patients and explore a wider variety of information resources such as Japanese print books (60.4%), Ichushi -Web (40.3%), Japanese online books (20.5%), and websites of academic organizations (19.0%). Although the overall recognition of the value of information was relatively modest, concrete changes in clinical practice were found in some areas. Environments with insufficient information and availability of electronic resources should be improved to increase the use of library and information services for implementing EBM.</p>

SIMARA: a database for key-value information extraction from full-page handwritten documents

<p>We propose a new database for information extraction from historical handwritten documents. The corpus includes 5,393 finding aids from six different series, dating from the 18th-20th centuries. Finding aids are handwritten documents that contain metadata describing older archives. They are stored in the National Archives of France and are used by archivists to identify and find archival documents.</p> <p><br> Each document is annotated at page-level, and contains seven fields to retrieve. The localization of each field is not available in such a way that this dataset encourages research on segmentation-free systems for information extraction.<br> &nbsp;</p>

Data from: Value of information in natural resource management: technical developments and application to pink-footed geese

The "value of information" (VOI) is a generic term for the increase in value resulting from better information to guide management, or alternatively, the value foregone under uncertainty about the impacts of management (Yokota and Thompson, Medical Decision Making 2004; 24: 287). The value of information can be characterized in terms of several metrics, including the expected value of perfect information and the expected value of partial information. We extend the technical framework for the value of information by further developing the relationship between value metrics for partial and perfect information and describing patterns of their performance. We use two different expressions for the expected value of partial information to highlight its relationship to the expected value of perfect information. We also develop the expected value of partial information for hierarchical uncertainties. We highlight patterns in the value of information for the Svalbard population of the pink-footed goose (Anser brachyrhynchus), a population that is subject to uncertainty in both reproduction and survival functions. The framework for valuing information is seen as having widespread potential in resource decision making, and serves as a motivation for resource monitoring, assessment, and collaboration.

The value added of organized information: from Floridi to Bennett

<p><span>Recently, Floridi has proposed that ethics be centered on the notion of information, which would represent a value in itself. As anything contains information in some form, this stance would imply that anything has intrinsic value. While this perspective is intriguing as it would make information science an even more important domain, it needs to be refined by distinguishing between different levels of organized information. Instances of matter, of life, of minds, of civil society, and of cultural heritage are all different kinds of informational systems, each formed through an evolutionary path that has built on the previous levels, with a corresponding increase in what Bennett has defined as logical depth. This process makes the logically deepest phenomena especially valuable, as they could not be recreated without repeating the whole path. Personal experiences of individual humans, either shared orally or recorded in diaries, as well as collective knowledge and knowledge organization systems, that can be documented in texts or in images before disappearing, are especially precious sorts of information and should be acknowledged the highest value.</span></p>
