Slugs were inoculated onto moist soil in region "a," and could access a leaf disc on moist soil in region "c" afer traversing region "b" that contained wet or dry soil that was either with or without physical 'barrier' material. The circles represent a small plastic Petri dish within a larger Petri dish; the walls of dishes preserved the integrity of the soil moisture treatments.
