Specialized vitamin D databases- European collection and USDA SR26 collection

<p>These two data sets are collections of best quality data on vitamin D content in foods, available in Europe (hosted by EuroFIR<sup>TM</sup>) and in US (hosted by USDA- in SR26). Data was collected in period of 2014-2015.&nbsp; Search criteria&nbsp; included&nbsp; analytical and manufactures&#39; data sources, and these are sorted in food groups and vitamin D forms- vitamin D total (expressed in ug/100g or IU, and converted to ug), vitamin D3 (ug/100g), vitamin D2 (ug/100g), vitamin 25OHD&nbsp;(ug/100g).&nbsp;</p> <p>A manuscript describing creation process of these two dataset is uploaded as well.&nbsp;</p>

The Relationship between Vitamin D Status, Intake and Exercise Performance in UK University-level Athletes and Healthy Inactive Controls

<p>The potential ergogenic effects of vitamin D (vitD) in high performing athletes has received considerable attention in the literature and media. However, little is known about non-supplemented university athletes and students residing at a higher latitude. This study aimed to investigate the effects of vitD (biochemical status and dietary intake) on exercise performance in UK university athletes and sedentary students. Physically healthy male and female university students and athletes from the University of Surrey (51.2&ordm;N) were recruited between January and March (2018) to take part in this study. A total of 50 participants (n= 24 males, n= 26 females) were included, 34 (n=18 male, n=16 female) were university athletes competing in a variety of sports.&nbsp;</p> <p>Fasted serum vitD status and sunlight exposure were assessed using LC-MS/MS and dosimetry, respectively. Body composition was measured through the use of a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) whole body scan (Hologic QDR, Hologic inc. USA). Muscular strength of the upper and lower body was assessed using dominant arm handgrip and knee extensor dynamometry (KE) of the non-dominant leg.&nbsp; Countermovement jump (CMJ) and aerobic fitness were measured using an Optojump and VO<sub>2max</sub> test using a stationery cycle ergometer, respectively.</p>

Vitamin D status is heritable and under environment-dependent selection in the wild

<p>Vitamin D has a well-established role in skeletal health and is increasingly linked to chronic disease and mortality in humans and companion animals. Despite the clear significance of vitamin D for health and obvious implications for fitness under natural conditions, no longitudinal study has tested whether the circulating concentration of vitamin D is under natural selection in the wild. Here, we show that concentrations of dietary-derived vitamin D and endogenously-produced vitamin D metabolites are heritable and largely polygenic in a wild population of Soay sheep (<em>Ovis aries</em>). Vitamin D status was positively associated with female adult survival, and vitamin D status predicted female fecundity in particular, good environment years when sheep density and competition for resources was low. Our study provides evidence that vitamin D status has the potential to respond to selection, as well as new insights into how vitamin D metabolism is associated with fitness in the wild. </p>

Vitamins are among the environmental factors that are considered for CAKUT aetiology. In this study, we collected vitamin A and vitamin D target genes and computed their overlap with CAKUT-related gene sets. We observed in particular significant overlaps between vitamin A target genes and CAKUT causal genes or genes involved in renal system development.</p>

Vitamin D deficiency and SARS‑CoV‑2 infection: D-COVID study

<p>D-COVID is a proyect to study the association between COVID-19 infection and vitamin D deficiency in patients of a terciary university hospital. To investigate the clinical evolution and prognosis of patients with COVID-19 and vitamin D deficiency, several queries qere launched into a Database containing plain text apparitions of certain terms in medical reports, as well as structured data. These apparitions were detected using NLP technology, and then saved individually in a database. The presented dataset is a bounded version of such database, containing only relevant data to the one extracted for the associated study. The effect of Vitamin D levels on the course of COVID-19 in hospitalized patients – a 1-year prospective cohort study

<p>Background: The aim of the current study was to assess the patients with COVID-19 and the impact of vitamin D supplementation on the course of COVID-19.<br> Methods: This prospective cohort study included patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 between December 2020 and December 2021. Patients&#39; demographic, clinical, and laboratory parameters were analysed.&nbsp;<br> Results: 301 participants were enrolled in the study. 46 (15,3%) had moderate, and 162 (53,8%) had severe COVID-19. 14 (4,7%) patients died, and 30 (10,0%) were admitted to the ICU due to disease worsening. The majority needed oxygen therapy (n=224; 74,4%). Average vitamin 25(OH)D3 levels were below optimal at the admittance, and vitamin D deficiency was detected in 205 individuals. More male patients were suffering from vitamin D deficiency. Patients with the more severe disease showed lower levels of vitamin 25(OH)D3 in their blood. The most severe group of patients had more symptoms that lasted significantly longer with progressing disease severity. This group of patients also suffered from more deaths, ICU admissions, and treatments with dexamethasone, remdesivir, and oxygen.<br> Conclusion: Patients with the severe course of COVID-19 were shown to have increased inflammatory parameters, increased mortality, and higher incidence of vitamin D deficiency. The results suggest that the vitamin D deficiency might represent a significant risk factor for a severe course of COVID-19.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

The role of rehabilitation and vitamin D supplementation on motor and psychological outcomes in poststroke patients.

<p>Post-Stroke depression affects between 12% and 72% of patients who have suffered a stroke. The association between low serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH) D) and increased risk of depression is reported in both stroke and non-stroke patients. Similarly, high 25(OH) D levels might be associated with greater functional improvement during rehabilitation program.</p> <p>We wanted to investigate the effects of an intensive rehabilitation on poststroke outcomes. We wondered if the daily rehabilitation of motor and cognitive functions could also have an effect on mood and functional abilities in addition to or as an alternative to vitamin D supplementation.</p> <p>We conducted a 12-week, randomized trial, double blind, parallel, monocentric clinical trial of 40 patients undergoing intensive neuro-rehabilitation treatment at a specialized care facility for ischemic or hemorrhagic brain stroke. Participants were randomly assigned, in a 1:1 ratio, to 1 of 2 parallel groups: in the experimental group, 2000 IU/day of oral cholecalciferol was administered; in the control group patients were not taking vitamin D supplementation. Patients underwent a text evaluation to investigate psychological and motor outcomes.</p> <p>Significant intra-group difference in outcomes measures was found but not between control group and experimental group. In the vitamin D group, we highlighted significant differences between T0 and T1 in calcium (<em>P</em> &lt; .001), vitamin D (<em>P</em> &lt; .001), in Montgomery Aasberg Depression Rating Scale (<em>P</em> = .001), and in Functional Independent Measures (<em>P</em> &lt; .001). In the health control group, we found a significant difference in calcium (<em>P</em> = .003), vitamin D (<em>P</em> &lt; .001), Montgomery Aasberg Depression Rating Scale (<em>P</em> = 0.006), in general self-efficacy (<em>P</em> = .009), and in Functional Independent Measures (<em>P</em> &lt; .001).</p> <p>Our results show that the beneficial effect on mood and functional recovery is mainly due to neurorehabilitation rather than vitamin D supplementation.</p>

Data from: Vitamin D induces SIRT1 activation through K610 deacetylation in colon cancer

<p><span>Posttranslational modifications of epigenetic modifiers provide a flexible and timely mechanism for rapid adaptations to the dynamic environment of cancer cells. SIRT1 is an NAD<sup>+</sup>-dependent epigenetic modifier whose activity is classically associated with healthy aging and longevity, but its function in cancer is not well understood. Here, we reveal that 1</span><span>a</span><span>,25-dihydroxyvitamin D<sub>3</sub> (1,25(OH)<sub>2</sub>D<sub>3</sub>, calcitriol), the active metabolite of vitamin D (VD), promotes SIRT1 activation through auto-deacetylation in human colon carcinoma cells, and identify lysine 610 as an essential driver of SIRT1 activity. Remarkably, our data show that the post-translational control of SIRT1 activity mediates the antiproliferative action of 1,25(OH)<sub>2</sub>D<sub>3</sub>. This effect is reproduced by the SIRT1 activator SRT1720, suggesting that SIRT1 activators may offer new therapeutic possibilities for colon cancer patients who are VD deficient or unresponsive. Moreover, this might be extrapolated to inflammation and other VD deficiency-associated and highly prevalent diseases in which SIRT1 plays a prominent role.</span></p>
