The first geospatial dataset of irrigated fields (2020-2024) in Vojvodina (Serbia)

Irrigation is a cornerstone of global food security, enabling sustainable agricultural production and helping to ensure that food is available for people around the world, now and in the future. Mapping irrigated fields provides valuable information for sustainable water management, agricultural development, and environmental conservation efforts. However, the collection of high-quality training data, which is necessary for accurate irrigation mapping remains costly and labour-intensive. To address this, we created a georeferenced regional dataset consisting of location, crop type, and occurrence of the irrigation equipment which are essential information for mapping irrigated fields. Four main irrigated crops were considered: maize, soybean, sugar beet, and wheat. The dataset, consisting of a total of 1256 parcels, is created for Vojvodina, the main agricultural area in Serbia, spanning the period of five years (2020 - 2024). This study’s goal is to give accessibility to our dataset which further can be explored and used for building or fine-tuning machine learning and deep learning models for the automatic detection of irrigated fields using satellite imagery.

Fig. 2. Scatterplots of population-specific dimension stimulus coordinates as obtained from multidimensional scaling (three-dimensional model); A (up): plot of first and second dimensions, B (down): plot of first and third dimensions. Convex polygons encompass the 20 Austrian (black circles and light grey area) and the eight Bulgarian (white circles and dark grey area) populations, respectively. Black cross indicates the Vojvodina (VOJ) population; for acronymes of Austrian populations see

Cropping intensity maps for Vojvodina, Serbia

This dataset represents cropping intensity maps in Vojvodina (Serbia) for 2022 and 2023, characterized by different weather conditions. These maps have a resolution of 10 meters and were created using machine learning techniques applied to Sentinel-2 data, along with on-site collected ground truth data.
The maps are in .tiff format and include the following classes:

single summer cropping (0)

single winter cropping (1)

double-cropping (2)

clover (3)

other (4).

Sentinel-2 based maps of irrigated fields in Vojvodina, Serbia

This dataset consists of classified irrigated fields of the three most irrigated crops in Vojvodina (Serbia): maize, soybean, and sugar beet. Maps were generated for three years (2020, 2021, 2022), characterized by different climate conditions using Sentinel-2 satellite data and machine learning algorithms. All maps are in GIS format (.tiff) where label 0 corresponds to non-irrigated fields while label 1 corresponds to irrigated fields in Vojvodina and as if could be used for further research.

Agricultural Monitoring in Vojvodina, Serbia

This dataset had been collected during the LandSense agricultural demonstration pilot, which focuses on leveraging the power of Earth Observation (EO) systems and advanced crowdsourcing techniques to deliver value added services to European farmers and public authorities in the agricultural sector. Pilot activities, led by INOSENS, were localized in Vojvodina province of Serbia and were implemented over two phases. During the Phase 1 campaign (Nov, 2017-Sep, 2018), agricultural high school students and master students from University of Novi Sad were actively involved in data collection. During the Phase 2 campaign (Feb-Oct, 2019), a group of individual farmers participated in the collecting of agricultural in-situ data. The mobile and web-based CropSupport application, developed by INOSENS was the primary tool for in-situ data collection related to crop type and farm management. Besides the functionalities for intuitive in-situ data collection, the application allows users to access (free of charge) information related to their land, such as weather forecast for the micro locations of their parcels, the LandSense Change Detection Service as well as processed satellite images that contain information on potential stress of crops due to exposure to pests, plant diseases, water scarcity or nutrient elements in the soil (e.g. NDVI, vegetation and moisture indexes). The datasets show the delineated parcels and crowdsourced in-situ photographs for crop type classification.

Contributors:
1.
