NRCS-USFS Soil Moisture Measurements - Fernow Experimental Forest, WV, 2022-2025
This dataset consists of soil moisture (volumetric water content and water potential), temperature, and electrical conductivity measurements at multiple depths within 20 soil pedons distributed across Watersheds 4, 5, 6, and 7 at the Fernow Experimental Forest from September 2022 to June 2025. This work is a part of a larger partnership between the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to install, monitor and generate long-term soil moisture datasets across multiple forested watersheds in the U.S. Associated data packages from both the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory and Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest can be found on the EDI Data Portal. Dataset contributors: Fernow site selection and project planning conducted by Ben Rau (USFS), Ann Tan (NRCS), and James Leonard (NRCS). Megan Thomas (NRCS) and Joel Gebhard (NRCS) assisted with site installation. Site visits, data downloading, and logger maintenance was by Tyler Sharretts (USFS) and Chris Cassidy (USFS). The dataset was curated by Emily Piche (USFS, ORISE) and Amanda Pennino (NRCS). Overall partnership initiation and project management was by Stephanie Connolly (USFS) and Skye Wills (NRCS).
Soil extracellular enzyme activities in plots dominated by trees that associate with arbuscular mycorrhizal or ectomycorrhizal fungi in the N fertilized and reference watershed at the Fernow Experimental Forest, WV.
Our objective was to detect possible differences in N fertilization responses of soil extracellular enzymes in plots dominated by trees that associate with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AM) or ectomycorrhizal fungi (ECM). To do this, we established a plot network of 6 AM and 6 ECM dominated 10 x 10 m plots in both the reference and N fertilized watersheds (N=24 plots) at the Fernow Experimental Forest, Parsons, WV. We assayed the potential activity of hydrolytic enzymes that release N (N-acetylglucosaminidase; NAG), phosphorus (acid phosphatase; AP), and simple carbon (ß-glucosidase; BG). In addition, we measured microbial allocation to complex C degrading oxidative enzymes phenol oxidase and peroxidase. The activities of these enzymes were measured separately in bulk mineral, rhizosphere, and organic horizon soils during the growing season in 2017.
WV-TTL: water vapor mixing ratio from GEOSCCM and trajectory model simulations in tropical tropopause layer

This dataset includes 100 hPa water vapor mixing ratio simulated from a trajectory transport model and a climate-chemistry model in the tropical tropopause layer from 2005 to 2016 in the format of netCDF. The data are monthly and have three dimensions as lon/lat/time in the unit of parts per million by volume.

Also included the tropical average time series of indices for Brewer-Bobson circulation (BDC), tropospheric temperature and/or Quasi-biennial Oscillation (QBO) from ERAi/MERRA-2/GEOSCCM. These indices are used in a multivariate regression.

The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Fernow Experimental Forest (FER) contains county area measurements in squareKilometers units and were aggregated to a yearly timescale.
