PPAST-GR Dataset: Greek Parliament Proceedings post WWII Analysis and Recognition
<p>The first post-WWII years in Greece were devastating. After a brutal Nazi occupation, the Greek Civil War (1946–1949) erupted. It wrecked the economy and the country’s infrastructure and altered politics and the social fabric for decades to come. For the tense and unstable first years of the conflict (1946–1947), a study of the issues discussed in the Greek parliament could facilitate our understanding of the society at the time. An obstacle is that parliament proceedings are publicly available in a machine-readable form from 1989; before that only scanned images of the original records exist. We show that text recognition followed by natural language processing can unlock this corpus for historical research. Using Transkribus, we trained a text recogniser (1.5% CER) that we applied to 3,156 images from 1946 and 1947. As low-quality recognition is inevitable, we trained a language model on the transcribed text and applied it to recognised text, discarding records with high average cross-entropy. Using information extraction techniques, we sampled speeches that were applauded and we introduce the first quantification of issues that were thus received. All our resources will be made public.</p> <p>Our model is publicly available through the Transkribus platform (http://www.transkribus.org/) under the name "Greek Parliamentary Proceedings 1946".</p>

German WWII Bunker Ijmuiden Beach
Built this one after a 3d scan model somebody else uploaded to Sketchfab. I replaced the bunker itself with some new geometry so now it looks like the bunker is brand new without any grafitti and whatsnot. Bunkers like these are part of the Atlantic Wall. Brevard Veterans Memorial Center WWII Marker
In honor of Memorial Day this year, I stopped by the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center in Merritt Island to take a few photos and pay my respects. This WWII marker caught my eye and so I asked the staff if I could 3D model it. The museum has an amazing array of artifacts dating from the Civil War to today. Special exhibits focus on aspects within military history; females in the military and the War on Terror are two examples. The yard of the museum is bursting at the seams with tanks, helicopters, jets, and memorial markers. The museum houses a library, maintains an oral history project for local vets, and engages in work to support area vets and active duty soldiers. Air-Filtration unit from a German bunker WWII
Many German bunkers from WWII had these anti-gas air filtration systems installed that had to manually be operated to pump outside air through an air filter in to the bunker. The round pressure-valves in the walls can be found in most bunkers. These are called "uberdruckventil" and that basically means over-pressure-valve and would automatically let air out in case of overpressure inside the bunker. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
WWII Stg-44 German Rifle
The StG 44 (abbreviation of Sturmgewehr 44, "assault rifle 44") is a German selective-fire rifle developed during World War II. It is also known as the MP 43 and MP 44 (Maschinenpistole 43 and 44). The StG 44 was the first successful assault rifle, with features including a relatively short cartridge, controllable automatic fire, a more compact design than a battle rifle with a quicker rate of fire, and intended for hitting targets within a few hundred metres. The StG 44 fulfilled its role effectively, particularly on the Eastern Front, offering a greatly increased volume of fire compared to standard infantry rifles. It came too late to have much effect on the war, but did influence the Soviet AK-47 that was introduced three years after the war concluded. Its influence can still be seen in modern assault rifles. 'Stekelvarken S3' Kazemat (Dutch WWII bunker)
3D model of a Dutch bunker type S3 'stekelvarken' ('porcupine'). This bunker type was designed in 1939 and housed one light machine gun. The gun could be positioned in one of the three hatches, and the other two could be locked off with a 2cm thick steel door. The bunker's walls were made of 80cm thick reinforced concrete. A total of 763 bunkers of this type have been built in the days before WWII in the Netherlands. During the invasion by the German army in may 1940 the S3 bunkers proved to be vulnerable because of their relatively thin walls and big shooting holes. WWII Kar98K German Sniper Rifle
The Karabiner 98 kurz "carbine 98 short", often abbreviated Kar98k or K98k and often incorrectly referred to as a "K98" (which was a Polish Carbine), is a bolt-action rifle chambered for the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge that was adopted on 21 June 1935 as the standard service rifle by the German Wehrmacht. It was one of the final developments in the long line of Mauser military rifles. Although supplemented by semi- and fully automatic rifles during World War II, it remained the primary German service rifle until the end of the war in 1945. Millions were captured by the Soviets at the conclusion of World War II and were widely distributed as military aid. V-1 flying bomb WWII Vergeltungswaffe 1
The infamous V-1 rocket from WWII, or as the Germans called it: Vergeltungswaffe 1 The V-1 was the first of the so-called "Vengeance weapons" series (V-weapons or Vergeltungswaffen) deployed for the terror bombing of London. It was developed at Peenemünde Army Research Center in 1939 by the Nazi German Luftwaffe at the beginning of the Second World War, and during initial development was known by the codename "Cherry Stone". Because of its limited range, the thousands of V-1 missiles launched into England were fired from launch facilities along the French (Pas-de-Calais) and Dutch coasts.
