<p><span>Agricultural activities have been positively affected by the use of plastic products, but this has resulted in the production of plastic waste and led to an increase in environmental pollution. </span><span>This file concerns plastic waste indices to different crop types and plastic products allowed quantifying and georeferencing actual plastic waste production. Two improved scenarios were considered, the first consisted of extending the lifespan of some plastics, and the second entailed the introduction of some biodegradable alternatives. </span></p>
Reuse streams at UK waste facilities (HWRCs)
<div> <p>The UK recycles thousands of working and repairable devices every week at its waste facilities. But fixing or reusing them instead could reduce waste, lower emissions and save households money. </p> <p>Through a citizen science project, we investigated what reuse streams are currently available at household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs) and the challenges of making reuse more widely available.</p> <p>This dataset contains records for all HWRCs across the UK and details of any publicly-communicated reuse streams at each site. It is accompanied by a narrative report. Last updated October 2024.</p> </div>

Can household storage conditions reduce food waste and environmental impact ? A broccoli case study
<p>The consumption stage has been identified as the largest producer of food waste (FW) across the food supply chain (FSC), with fruit and vegetables being the most affected product category. The present study aims to determine the op- timal storage scenario at household level to avoid food waste and which has the lowest environmental footprint. Broc- coli was stored under different storage conditions: unbagged or bagged (periodically opened) in bioplastic bags inside a domestic refrigerator at 5 or 7 °C for 34 days and then analysed for relative humidity (RH), sensory properties and bioactive compounds. A life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to evaluate the environmental profile of 1 kg of broccoli purchased by the consumer (cradle-to-grave). At day 0 (base scenario) the carbon footprint was 0.81 kg CO2 eq/kg, with the vegetable farming being the main contributor to this environmental impact, mostly driven by fertiliser (production and its emissions to air and water) and irrigation (due to electricity consumption for water pumping). Quality and food waste depended on time and storage conditions: For short storage times, within three days, the best quality combined with the lowest environmental footprint was for unbagged broccoli at 7 °C and no household food waste. However, this scenario had the highest food waste level from day 3 onwards, with increased resource loss and overall environmental footprint. For long-term storage, using a bag and storing at 5 °C helped to re- duce food waste with the lowest environmental footprint. For example, at 16 days, this scenario (bagged at 5 °C) could save 4.63 kg/FU ofbroccoli and 3.16 kg CO2 eq/FU compared to the worst scenario (unbagged at 7 °C). Consumers are the key to reducing household food waste and this research provides the knowledge for improvement.</p>

However, after utilization, only some of these materials are recovered or recycled, many are discarded due to a lack of implemented recovery technologies and regulations, or due to the content of contaminants. Moreover, many of the potentially recoverable materials are deposited in landfills or shipped to less developed countries for disposal where they can cause environmental contamination. The new approach to waste management follows the hierarchy of waste prevention. First, waste is prepared for reuse and repair without the need for treatment processes, or it is recycled. If this is not possible, the waste is incinerated with energy recovery, or failing that, it is disposed of in landfills. This waste hierarchy has become one of the key factors in the transformation of a linear economy into a circular economy. Particularly noteworthy is waste containing raw materials of significant economic importance, especially those of a high supply risk due to the level of concentration in another country and import dependence. These critical raw materials (CRM) are an inherent part of our modern, technology-driven life. They are essential to national security and the economic development of every country. Their use is drastically increasing, and with it, the need to assure their reliable and unrestricted access along with lowering the environmental impact from their production and extraction. Currently, scientists and industry direct a lot of effort into finding new supplies of these materials, not only from traditional sources in nature but also from new sources like anthropogenic waste. The purpose of this study is to present the raw material potential which remains mostly unused in residues from municipal waste incineration in regions with highly developed economies – the United States and the European Union. These economies have shortages of their own raw material extraction capacity due to high levels of consumption and insufficient amounts of raw-material content in natural resources.</p>
Dataset: Insight in molecular degradation patterns and co-metabolism during rose waste co-composting
<p>This dataset and these scripts supports the article 'Insight in molecular degradation patterns and co-metabolism during rose waste co-composting' as published in Biogeochemistry. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10533-023-01092-1</p> <p>Roses are an important crop for the floricultural sector of Kenya and roses are a perennial crop and under continuous production for six to ten years. The cultivation produces large quantities of green waste, up to 50 kg per hectare per day. In this experiment we aimed to gain insight in the decomposition patterns underlying rose waste composting and to identify co-metabolisms of ligneous materials. Samples were taken during a six-month experiment and analyzed by pyrolysis-GC/MS (see manuscript for analytical details).</p>
Dataset: The impact of rose-waste compost on commercial cut rose cultivation in Kenya
<p>This dataset and these scripts supports the manuscript 'From waste to fertilizer: The impact of rose-waste compost on commercial cut rose cultivation in Kenya' as submitted to Cleaner Waste Systems. </p> <p>Roses are an important crop for the floricultural sector of Kenya and roses are a perennial crop and under continuous production for six to ten years. The cultivation produces large quantities of green waste, up to 50 kg per hectare per day. In this experiment we evaluated the impact of compost amendment on the yield and quality of cut roses cultivation in a large-scale commercial setting with over 7,500 rose plants. It was conducted between August 2022 and February 2024 near Lake Naivasha in Kenya. Additionally we evaluated the potential of compost to partially substitute mineral fertilizer. Yields were recorded daily and cut rose quality and physicochemical soil parameters were assessed every three to six months to comprehensively evaluate the impact of compost incorporation on cut rose production.</p>

The objective was to increase the understanding of composting lignocellulosic rose waste, which will help with the implementation of composting practices within Kenyan rose production and thereby reduce its negative ecological impact.</p> <p>In a small-scale composting system (30L) the evolution of five mixtures was closely monitored in terms of their physico-chemical parameters. Furthermore, the in-vitro disease suppressive capacity of mature rose waste was assessed. </p>
Dataset and R script for the analysis in the article "Food waste between environmental education, peers, and family influence. Insights from primary school students in Northern Italy", Journal of Cleaner Production
<p>We hereby publish the dataset (with metadata) and the R script (R Core team, 2018) used for implementing the analysis presented in the paper "Food waste between environmental education, peers, and family influence. Insights from primary school students in Northern Italy", <em>Journal of Cleaner Production </em>(Piras et al., 2023). The dataset is provided in csv format with semicolons as separators and "NA" for missing data. The dataset includes all the variables used in at least one of the models presented in the paper, either in the main text or in the Supplementary Material. Other variables gathered by means of the questionnaires included as Supplementary Material of the paper have been removed. The dataset includes inputted values for missing data on independent variables. These were inputted using two approaches: last observation carried forward (LOCF) - preferred when possible - and last observation carried backward (LOCB). The metadata are presented as a PDF file.</p>
Mass of wastes discharged directly from vessels to the water column
<p>Data set of mass discharge of selected pollutants from shipping in the European region. Created in the framework of the project Evaluation, control and Mitigation of the EnviRonmental impacts of shippinG Emissions (EMERGE).</p> <p>To determine the mass of discharged pollutants, AIS-based ship emission modelling of discharge volumes is combined with results of water effluent analysis. For the discharge volumes, the Ship Traffic Emission Assessment Model (STEAM) is used. The total discharge volume of wastes is comprised of five waste streams: open/close scrubber, grey, black and ballast water. For the content of pollutants in the five waste streams, a bibliographic database of waste stream pollutant concentrations compiled during the project is used.</p>
U.S. household food waste tracking data in support of Li et al. 2023
These data were used to generate the results in the article “Household Food Waste Trending Upwards in the United States: Insights from a National Tracking Survey,” by Ran Li, Yiheng Shu, Kathryn E. Bender & Brian E. Roe, which has been accepted for publication in the Journal of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (doi – https://doi.org/10.1002/jaa2.59). The Stata code used to generate results is available from the authors upon request. U.S. residents who participate in consumer panels managed by a commercial vendor were invited by email or text message to participate in a two-part online survey during four waves of data collection: February and March of 2021 (Feb 21 wave, 425 initiated, 361 completed), July and August of 2021 (Jul 21 wave, 606 initiated, 419 completed), December of 2021 and January of 2022 (Dec 21 wave, 760 initiated, 610 completed), and February, March and April of 2022 (Feb 22 wave, 607 initiated, 587 completed), July, August and Septemper of 2022 (Jul 22 wave, 1817 initiated, 1067 completed). We are not able to determine if any respondents participated in multiple waves, i.e., if any of the observations are repeat participants. All participants provided informed consent and received compensation. Inclusion criteria included age 18 years or older and performance of at least half of the household food preparation. No data was collected during major holidays, i.e., the weeks of the Fourth of July (Independence Day), Christmas, or New Years. Recruitment quotas were implemented to ensure sufficient representation by geographical region, race, and age group. Post-hoc sample weights were constructed to reflect population characteristics on age, income and household size. The protocol was approved by the local Internal Review Board. Landslides from Space - Shenzhen Construction Waste Landslide, China (20th December 2015)
<p>On 20th December 2015 a construction waste deposit in Shenzhen failed and slid down the hill. It partially destroyed and buried an industrial building and worker living area. More than 70 people died in this industrial disaster.</p> <p>The pre-event acquisition is from 22nd November 2015 (Sentinel-2) and the post-event acquisition is from 6th January 2016 (Landsat-8).<br> <br> <em>Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel and Landsat data (2015-2016) </em></p>
Landslides from Space - Kakanj Mine Waste Landslide, Bosnia (24th February 2017)
<p>On February 24<sup>th</sup> 2017 a massive mine waste landslide from an open pit coal mine occurred. It had approximately the dimension of 600 metres in width and 800 metres in length. Through this slide the stream Ribnica was dammed up and created a small lake. Because of potential dam breach 150 people of two villages had to be evacuated downstream.<br> <br> The pre-event acquisition is from 14th February 2017 (Sentinel-2) and the post-event acquisition is from 16th March 2017 (Sentinel-2).<br> <br> <em>Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data (2017)</em></p>
