On energy transfer of parametric resonance for wave energy conversion

Parametric resonance has been observed, both numerically and experimentally, in various studies of wave energy converters (WECs). A large motion in heave induces a periodic variation in the metacentric height of a WEC body, and, consequently, causes a harmonic variation in pitch/roll restoring coefficients, which can parametrically excite the pitch/roll modes. Current studies have a specific focus to determine the occurrence conditions of parametric resonance, by detecting the boundaries between stable and unstable regions in the parameter space. In the literature, some studies aim to make use of parametric resonance for improving power capture. In contrast, some studies try to suppress the effect of parametric resonance, as it reduces power capture efficiency. However, how energy transfers from one mode to another is not fully understood. This study aims to analyse the energy transfer between heave and pitch/roll modes when parametric resonance occurs. A generic cylindrical point absorber is studied as a WEC floater to considering non-linear wave-structure interaction, including non-linear Froude-Krylov and viscous forces. A heave-pitch-roll three-degree-of-freedom model is derived for numerical study of the energy transfer between different operation modes.

Data from: Upper atmosphere heating from ocean-generated acoustic wave energy
Colliding sea surface waves generate the ocean microbarom, an acoustic signal that may transmit significant energy to the upper atmosphere. Previous estimates of acoustic energy flux from the ocean microbarom and mountain/wind interactions are on the order of 0.01 to 1 mW/m2, heating the thermosphere by tens of degrees Kelvin per day. We captured up going ocean microbarom waves with a balloon borne infrasound microphone; the maximum acoustic energy flux was approximately 0.05 mW/m2. This is about half the average value reported in previous ground-based microbarom observations spanning eight years. The acoustic flux from the microbarom episode described here may have heated the thermosphere by several degrees Kelvin per day while the source persisted. We suggest that ocean wave models could be used to parameterize acoustically-generated heating of the upper atmosphere based on sea state.

Data for: Industrial energy development decouples ungulate migration from the green wave

The ability to freely move across the landscape to track the emergence of nutritious spring green-up (termed "green-wave surfing"), is key to the foraging strategy of migratory ungulates. Across the vast landscapes traversed by many migratory herds, habitats are being altered by development with unknown consequences for surfing. Using a unique long-term tracking dataset, we found that when energy development occurs within mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) migration corridors, migrating animals become decoupled from the green wave. During the early phases of a coalbed natural gas development, deer synchronized their movements with peak green-up. But faced with increasing disturbance as development expanded, deer altered their movements by holding up at the edge of the gas field and letting the green wave pass them by. Development often modified only a small portion of the migration corridor but had far-reaching effects on behavior before and after migrating deer encountered it, thus reducing surfing along the entire route by 38.65% over the 14-year study period. Our study suggests that industrial development within migratory corridors can change the behavior of migrating ungulates and diminish the benefits of migration. Such disruptions to migratory behavior present a common mechanism whereby corridors become unprofitable and could ultimately be lost on highly developed landscapes.

Dataset from: "Uncertainty-Aware Interpretable Prognosis for Wave Energy Converters with Recurrent Expansion"

This dataset comprises run-to-failure sensor data derived from a mathematical model simulating wave energy converter behavior, particularly for Oscillating Water Column Turbines (OWCTs). The dataset includes vibration, temperature, pressure, acceleration, strain, flow, torque, rotation, and remaining useful life (RUL) readings for one life cycle. Through normalization, the data is scaled uniformly for robust analysis and interpretation. Researchers can leverage this dataset to develop and validate their prognostic models for OWCTs.

To cite this dataset, please refer to:

Berghout Tarek and Benbouzid Mohamed. (2024).
