SBC LTER: Daily averages of modeled significant wave height (Hs) and peak wave period (Tp) in the Santa Barbara Coastal area from the Coastal Data Information Program - Monitoring and Prediction System (CDIP MOP)
From http://cdip.ucsb.edu: The Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP) is a research group at Scripps Institution of Oceanography that monitors coastal waves and nearshore sand levels on regional scales. CDIP maintains a network of optimally-placed, directional wave buoys from San Diego to Eureka. The buoy measurements are used to initialize a high spatial resolution (100m x 100m) linear spectral wave propagation model. The resulting hourly hindcasts and nowcasts of CA coastal wave conditions have a level of accuracy that is not possible with more traditional wind-wave generation models that are initialized with modeled wind fields.

Data from: Dynamic models for impact-initiated stress waves through snow columns

The objective of this research is to model snow's response to dynamic, impact loading. Two constitutive relationships are considered: elastic and Maxwell-viscoelastic. These material models are applied to laboratory experiments consisting of 1000 individual impacts across 22 snow column configurations. The columns are 60 cm tall with a 30 cm by 30 cm cross-section. The snow ranges in density from 135-428 kg m-3 and is loaded with both short-duration (~1 ms) and long-duration (~10 ms) impacts. The Maxwell-viscoelastic model more accurately describes snow's response because it contains a mechanism for energy dissipation, which the elastic model does not. Furthermore, the ascertained model parameters show a clear dependence on impact duration; shorter duration impacts resulted in higher wave speeds and greater damping coefficients. The stress wave's magnitude is amplified when it hits a stiffer material because of the positive interference between incident and reflected waves. This phenomenon is observed in the laboratory and modeled with the governing equations.

Data for RSTA-2021-0255 - Modelling attenuation of irregular wave fields by artificial ice floes in the laboratory

Data are from two independent experimental campaigns in 3D wave basins, which were conducted to investigate the interaction between surface waves and thin floating plates, mimicking the interaction between ocean waves and sea ice floes.

One experiment tested irregular waves, including directional spreading, with two peak steepness values comparable to storm and polar cyclone conditions, interacting with a single square polypropylene floe, with length close to the dominant wavelength (scattering regime) -- data file Single_Plate.zip.

The second experiment used arrays of wooden floes with low- and high-concentrations to test wave-floe interaction at a range of peak periods and peak wave steepness spanning from gentle to storm-like conditions -- data file MultipleDisks.zip.

Both data files contains raw data, experimental matrix and experimental set.

Data are fully described and analysed in a contribution to "Theory, modelling and observations of marginal ice zone dynamics: Multidisciplinary perspectives and outlooks" a special theme issue for Philosophical Transactions A:

Toffoli A., Pitt J. P. A., Alberello A., Bennetts L.G., 2022. Modelling attenuation of irregular wave fields by artificial ice floes in the laboratory. Philos. T. Roy. Soc. Data for: Ensemble-based data assimilation of significant wave height from Sofar Spotters and satellite altimeters with a global operational wave model

An ensemble-based method for wave data assimilation is implemented using significant wave height observations from the globally distributed network of Sofar Spotter buoys and satellite altimeters. The Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter (LETKF) method generates skillful analysis fields resulting in reduced forecast errors out to 2.5 days when used as initial conditions in a cycled wave data assimilation system. The LETKF method provides more physically realistic model state updates that better reflect the underlying sea state dynamics and uncertainty compared to methods such as optimal interpolation. Skill assessment far from any included observations and inspection of specific storm events highlights the advantages of LETKF over an optimal interpolation method for data assimilation. This advancement has immediate value in improving predictions of the sea state and, more broadly, enabling future coupled data assimilation and utilization of global surface observations across domains (atmosphere-wave-ocean).
