Groundwater, soil moisture, light and weather data in Brownsville forest, Nassawadox, VA, 2019-2023

This dataset includes groundwater, soil moisture, weather and light data collected in eight study sites in the Brownsville forested area (VA). In particular, sites H5 and H7 characterize the high forest where healthy Pinus taeda dominate, sites L1 and L6 characterize the low forest, where barren or dead Pinus taeda are present, sites M1 and M2 characterize the medium forest, representing transition between high and low forest, transition site where dead trees and saltmarsh vegetation live together and marsh site dominated by saltmarsh vegetation. Data collection, started in January 2019, is done for VCR-LTER and CCZN (Coastal Critical Zone Network) long term projects. CTD-Diver are used to measure groundwater pressure, specific conductance and temperature. They hang from a cable in six wells, one for each study site. Water pressure is compensated using barometric pressure data collected by the weather station nearby. Water levels are georeferenced to NAVD 88. Two soil moisture sensors for each site are placed 7-10 cm and 30 cm below the ground surface to detect water content, specific conductance and temperature of the first soil layer. Two weather stations are always installed in different sites. Their position is periodically changed to cover all sites. This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 2012322, Collaborative Research: Network Cluster: The Coastal Critical Zone: Processes that transform landscapes and fluxes between land and sea.

Fire Weather Index - ERA5 HRES

<p>The Fire Weather Index (FWI) is a numeric rating of fire intensity, dependent on weather conditions. This is a good indicator of fire danger because it contains both a component of fuel availability (drought conditions) and a measure of ease of spread.&nbsp;</p> <p>This is part of a larger dataset providing gridded field calculations from the Canadian Fire Weather Index System using weather forcings from the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ERA5 reanalysis dataset (Hersbach et al., 2019), and replaces the homonymous indices based on ERA-Interim (Vitolo et al., 2019). The dataset has been developed through a collaboration between the Joint Research Centre and ECMWF under the umbrella of the Global Wildfires Information System (GWIS), a joint initiative of the GEO and the Copernicus Work Programs.&nbsp;</p> <p>The dataset consists of seven indices, each of which describes a different aspect of the effect that fuel moisture and wind have on fire ignition probability and its behavior, if started. The indices are called: Fine Fuel Moisture Code (FFMC), Duff Moisture Code (DMC), Drought Code (DC), Initial Spread Index (ISI), Build Up Index (BUI), Fire Weather Index (FWI) and Daily Severity Rating (DSR). For convenience, each index is archived separately on Zenodo. &nbsp;</p> <p>Data are generated using the open source software GEFF v3.0 (https://git.ecmwf.int/projects/CEMSF/repos/geff), which now uses settings and parameters provided by the JRC (more info here https://git.ecmwf.int/projects/CEMSF/repos/geff/browse/NEWS.md). The caliver R package (Vitolo et al. 2017, 2018) contains useful functions to process this dataset.&nbsp;</p> <p>Details:&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li>File format: netcdf4</li> <li>Coordinate system: World Geodetic System 1984 (also known as WGS 1984, EPSG:4326)</li> <li>Longitude range: [-180, +180]</li> <li>Latitude range: [-90, +90]</li> <li>Temporal resolution: 1 day (at 12 local noon)</li> <li>Spatial resolution: 0.28 degrees (~31 Km)</li> <li>Spatial coverage: Global</li> <li>Time span: from 1980-01-01 to 2019-06-30</li> <li>Stream: Deterministic forecasts</li> </ul>

German weather services (DWD) multi annual meteorological rasters for the climate period 1991-2020 refined to 25m grid

<h1>Overview</h1> <p>These are two multi-annual raster products from the german weather service, that got refined from a 1km grid to a 25m grid, by using a local regression model.</p> <p>The base rasters from DWD are:</p> <ul> <li>HYRAS precipitation</li> <li>REGNIE precipitation</li> <li>DWD-grid (precipitation, potential evapotranspiration and temperature 2m above ground)</li> </ul> <p>To refine the grids the Copernicus DEM with a resolution of 25m got used. For every cell a linear regression model got created, by selecting the multi-annual rasters value and the elevation, from the original digital elevation model that was used by the DWD to create the raster, in a certain window around the cell. This window was at least 2 cells around the considered cell, so 5x5=25 cells. If the standard deviation of the elevation in this window was less than 4m, more neighbooring cells are considered until a maximum of 13x13=169 cells are considered. This widening of the window was necessary for flat regions to get a reasonable regression model.</p> <p>Out of these combinations of elevation and climate parameter a linear regression model was build. These regression models are then applied to the finer digital elevation model with its 25m resolution from Copernicus.</p> <p>The following image illustrates the generation of the refined rasters on a small example window:</p> <p></p>
