Supplemental data for: Variations in the naming of malondialdehyde (MDA) in PubMed-, Scopus-, and Web of Science-indexed literature

Three scientific databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (WoS)) were consulted (July 14, 2022) to assess the frequency of eight nomenclatural forms of malondialdehyde (MDA). Due to the peculiarities of the search interface of the selected databases, PubMed was searched in the Title and Abstract fields (search query example in PubMed: "malone dialdehyde"[Title/Abstract]), Scopus was searched in the Title, Abstract, and Keywords fields (search query example in Scopus: TITLE-ABS-KEY (“malone dialdehyde”)), and WoS Core Collection was searched in the Title, Abstract, Author keywords, and Keywords Plus fields (search query example in WoS Core Collection: TS=(“malone dialdehyde”)). All types of publications for the years 2002-2021 are taken into account.

Data from: Open access levels: a quantitative exploration using Web of Science and oaDOI data

This is the raw data behind the publication (on PeerJ Preprints):

Open access levels: a quantitative exploration using Web of Science and oaDOI data

Across the world there is growing interest in open access publishing among researchers, institutions, funders and publishers alike. It is assumed that open access levels are growing, but hitherto the exact levels and patterns of open access have been hard to determine and detailed quantitative studies are scarce. Using newly available open access status data from oaDOI in Web of Science we are now able to explore year-on-year open access levels across research fields, languages, countries, institutions, funders and topics, and try to relate the resulting patterns to disciplinary, national and institutional contexts. With data from the oaDOI API we also look at the detailed breakdown of open access by types of gold open access (pure gold, hybrid and bronze), using universities in the Netherlands as an example. There is huge diversity in open access levels on all dimensions, with unexpected levels for e.g. Portuguese as language, Astronomy & Astrophysics as research field, countries like Tanzania, Peru and Latvia, and Zika as topic. We explore methodological issues and offer suggestions to improve conditions for tracking open access status of research output. Finally, we suggest potential future applications for research and policy development. We have shared all data and code openly.

For the people by the people: citizen science web interface for real-time monitoring of tick risk areas in Finland

Ticks and tick-borne diseases (TBDs) form a significant and growing threat to human health and well-being in Europe, with increasing numbers of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme borreliosis cases being reported during the past few decades. Increasing knowledge of tick risk areas and seasonal activity remains the primary method for preventing TBDs. Crowdsourcing provides the best alternative for rapidly obtaining data on tick occurrence on a national level.

In order to produce and share up-to-date data about tick risk areas in Finland, an online platform, Punkkilive (www.punkkilive.fi/en), was launched in April 2021. On the website, users can submit and browse tick observations, report tick numbers and hosts, and upload pictures of ticks.

Here, we looked at trends in the crowdsourced data from 2021, assessed the effect of local tick species on seasonality of observations, and examined sampling bias in the data.

The high number of tick observations (n=78 837) highlights that there was demand for such a service. Approximately 97% of 5573 uploaded pictures represented ticks. Seasonal patterns of tick observations varied across Finland, highlighting variability in the risk associated with the two human-biting tick species Ixodes ricinus and I. persulcatus, the latter having a shorter, unimodal activity peak in late spring–early summer. Tick numbers were low and the proportion of new sightings was high in northern Finland, as may be expected near the latitudinal distribution limits of both species. While the number of inhabitants generally explained the number of tick observations well, geographically weighted regression models also identified areas that deviated from this general pattern.

This study offers a prime example of how crowdsourcing can be applied to track vectors of zoonotic diseases, to the benefit of both researchers and the public. Areas with more or fewer observations than predicted based on number of inhabitants were revealed, wherein more specific analyses may reveal factors contributing to lower or higher risk levels that may be used in increasing awareness. We hope that the success of Punkkilive serves to highlight the usefulness of citizen science in the prevention of vector-borne diseases.

Serbian researchers papers in Web of Science database in the period 2003-2021

This is dataset about Serbian papers published in journals indexed in Web of Science collections in the period 2003-2021
We used as "serbian" countries: Serbia, Serbia and Montenegro, Yugoslavia

The terms Serbian researcher and Serbian paper used in this dataset are defined as follows:
Serbian researcher is a researcher affiliated with a Serbian institution,
Serbian paper is a paper with at least one Serbian researcher in the list of authors.
This means that a paper published by a researcher with non-Serbian nationality (i.e. German) working at a Serbian institution is taken into account in the analysis of Serbian papers described in this paper.

Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science (WoS) database was used for data acquisition. We searched Serbian papers in two WoS collections - Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI). The search query executed over those collections on 18th of January, 2022.
CU=(%Serbia% OR %Serbia and Montenegro% OR %Yugoslavia%) AND PY=[2003-2021]

We also analyzed the number of articles of Serbian researchers published in journals with an unstable impact factor (IF), i.e. journals which didn’t have an IF before 2008, and had one in some subperiod of 2008-2015, i.e. lost their IF until 2015. The majority of those journals stopped being indexed in Web of Science as a ban for losing the quality or having predatory journal behavior. We found 143 such journals and their ISSNs by using the JCR (Journal citation reports in the period 2007 - 2015).
