United States LEMIS wildlife trade data curated by EcoHealth Alliance

<p>Shared here are&nbsp;United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Law Enforcement Management Information System (LEMIS) data on wildlife and wildlife product imports into the United States. This data was obtained via Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests by EcoHealth Alliance.</p> <p>Data were curated, cleaned, and made accessible&nbsp;via an R package interface:&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/ecohealthalliance/lemis">https://github.com/ecohealthalliance/lemis</a>.</p> <p>Additionally, a summary&nbsp;of a portion of the data can be found in Smith et al. 2017,&nbsp;<em>EcoHealth&nbsp;</em>(<a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s10393-017-1211-7">https://doi.org/10.1007/s10393-017-1211-7</a>).</p> <p>l<strong>emis_2000_2014_cleaned.csv</strong>: This file represents the compiled, cleaned LEMIS data from 2000-2014. Media portrayal of the illegal trade in wildlife: The case of turtles in the US and implications for conservation

<p class="MsoNormal">News media framing of instances of illegal wildlife trade provides a window into understanding public perceptions of trade dynamics and potential support for conservation actions. Here, we used 54 known cases of illegal turtle trade in the United States occurring between 1998–2021 as a case study to investigate news media framing of illegal wildlife trade. We synthesized information from these cases and qualitatively analyzed how they were framed in 217 associated news articles. The 54 cases involved the illegal trade of at least 24,000 freshwater turtles of 34 different species; box turtles (<em>Terrapene</em> spp.) were traded the most. Of the known species involved, 23 were listed under one of the CITES Appendices, and 12 were considered threatened by the IUCN. Trade occurred in at least 43 US states and 6 countries. Despite the multifaceted nature of these cases, problem and solution framing was relatively unvarying. Media coverage framed foreign demand, particularly from Asia for high-value pet turtles, as a main driver of illegal trade. Solutions focused on regulations and enforcement which follow global trends in illegal wildlife trade discourses. However, we also found that articles neutralized illegal turtle trade in several ways, reflecting a lack of perceived legitimacy of and necessity for trade rules and enforcement. Without acknowledging longstanding and formerly legal practices in wildlife trading, conservation efforts which focus on regulations and enforcement may be undermined by a lack of normative compliance.</p>

Excel code for: Trading off nature for nature-based solutions: The bioeconomics of forest management for wildlife, timber and carbon

<p>This dataset contains MS Excel spreadsheet code used to analyze an integrative model that illustrates the inherent trade-offs that will arise among the competing values for landscape space in a boreal forest ecosystem involving interactions among the main trophic compartments of an intact boreal ecosystem, aka "nature". The model accounts for carbon accumulation via biomass growth of forest trees (timber), carbon loss due to controls from moose herbivory that varies with moose population density (hunting), and soil carbon inputs and release, which together determine net ecosystem productivity (NEP), a measure of carbon sink strength of the ecosystem. We examine how controls on carbon dynamics are altered by forest management for timber harvest, and by moose hunting. We link the ecological dynamics with an economic analysis by assigning a price to carbon stored within the intact boreal forest ecosystem. We then weigh these carbon impacts against the economic benefits of timber production and hunting across a range of moose population densities. Combined, this carbon-bioeconomic program calculates the total ecosystem benefit of a modelled boreal forest system, providing a framework for examining how different forest harvest and moose densities influence the achievement of carbon storage targets, under different levels of carbon pricing.</p>

Data from: Understanding the biological invasion risk posed by the global wildlife trade: propagule pressure drives the introduction and establishment of Nearctic turtles

Biological invasions are a key component of human-induced global change. The continuing increase in global wildlife trade has raised concerns about the parallel increase in the number of new invasive species. However, the factors that link the wildlife trade to the biological invasion process are still poorly understood. Moreover, there are analytical challenges in researching the role of global wildlife trade in biological invasions, particularly issues related to the under-reporting of introduced and established populations in areas with reduced sampling effort. In this work, we use high-quality data on the international trade in Nearctic turtles (1999–2009) coupled with a statistical modelling framework, which explicitly accounts for detection, to investigate the factors that influence the introduction (release, or escape into the wild) of globally traded Nearctic turtles and the establishment success (self-sustaining exotic populations) of slider turtles (Trachemys scripta), the most frequently traded turtle species. We found that the introduction of a species was influenced by the total number of turtles exported to a jurisdiction and the age at maturity of the species, while the establishment success of slider turtles was best associated with the propagule number (number of release events), and the number of native turtles in the jurisdiction of introduction. These results indicate both a direct and indirect association between the wildlife trade and the introduction of turtles and establishment success of slider turtles, respectively. Our results highlight the existence of gaps in the number of globally recorded introduction events and established populations of slider turtles, although the expected bias is low. We emphasize the importance of researching independently the factors that affect the different stages of the invasion pathway. Critically, we observe that the number of traded individuals might not always be an adequate proxy for propagule pressure and establishment success.
