Dataset of "Structural Development on Ru and RuO2 Electrodes during Oxygen Evolution – an operando soft X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy Approach"

Time resolved in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in soft X-ray region was used to characterize polarized interphase on Ru and Ru oxide based electrodes under oxygen evolution reaction (OER) conditions. XAS spectra were used to align the type and population of oxygen-containing species formed at electrodes at anodic potentials with local electronic structure of the OER catalyst. The operando soft XAS data do not identify a single rate limiting process at potentials negative to 1.4 V vs Ag/AgCl. Individual intermediates of the oxygen evolution process coexist at the surface at potentials preceding the actual OER onset. The OER is accompanied with redistribution of the electron density resulting for a start of the catalytic cycle reflecting increased population of oxygen vacancies at the surface. The observed spectral behavior indicates a confinement of the OER to the coordination unsaturated sites (cus) at the surface.

Out-of-equilibrium charge redistribution data in a copper-oxide based superconductor by time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

This dataset was measured using a momentum microscope by time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) on the prototypical high-temperature superconductor: optimally doped BSCCO at FEL FLASH, DESY in Hamburg. With time-resolved XPS, unique access to the dynamics of individual atoms in the unit cell is granted by means of chemical shifts of the core levels. Though the induced changes are small, with a rigorous fitting procedure, it is possible to extract significant changes observed mainly at the oxygen atoms in the copper oxide planes, while other oxygen atoms as well as strontium remain largely unaffected. Although it was acquired not in the superconducting phase, the observed dynamics point to a significant coupling of energy scales involving charge-transfer processes and optical excitations. Such findings can thus provide another puzzle piece for a better understanding of high-temperature superconductivity.

Spectroscopy of the Cosmic Web: a view beyond collisional ionisation equilibrium with future X-ray telescopes

This is a special seminar I gave at the Goddard Space Flight Center of NASA about my Ph.D. research at the Leiden University and the Netherlands Institute for Space Research SRON. Here you can download the presentation slides as well as the recording of the seminar.

Abstract:

In this talk I will focus on the X-ray view of the cosmic web filaments, more specifically the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). Hitomi kick-started an upcoming era of X-ray microcalorimeters which offer an unprecedented spectral resolution of diffuse sources. Many spectral signatures that could not yet have been studied will become feasible for the detection, and my presentation will focus on two of these spectral effects.

Firstly, I will discuss how galaxy cluster photons alter the ionization state of nearby WHIM and affect the column densities of e.g. O VI, O VII, C V, or Ne VIII. Secondly,
I will discuss the feasibility of detecting the circum- and intergalactic medium in X-ray absorption using the extended intracluster medium as a backlight. For this study we used the cosmological hydrodynamical simulations Hydrangea (based on EAGLE) and we reported the feasibility of the detection of cosmic web filaments in OVII and in OVIII absorption with the microcalorimeter arrays onboard Athena and LEM. Last but not least, I will discuss my contribution to updating the cooling curve in the photoionisation model of the plasma code SPEX, and show the comparison to other plasma codes (MEKAL, APEC, Cloudy) and other atomic databases (CHIANTI, ADAS).
