Bridge2AI Grand Challenge AI-Readiness Evaluation Data Year 2 of 4

This excel workbook and set of radar plots contains current and projected AI-readiness evaluation datasets of four NIH Bridge2AI Program Grand Challenges in Functional Genomics, Clinical Care Informatics, Precision Public Health, and Return to Health (Salutogenesis). These evaluations were collected in late 2024, at the conclusion of Year 2 of the 4-year Bridge2AI program, by Grand Challenge (GC) representatives on the Bridge2AI Standards Working Group, in consultation with their GC leadership team, and will be updated in subsequent years and the program progresses. They assess biomedical AI readiness of existing collected data only.

Development of a national point-of-care ultrasound training course for physicians in Japan: A 3-year evaluation

Purpose: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) allows bedside clinicians to acquire, interpret, and integrate ultrasound images into patient care. Although the availability of POCUS training courses has increased, the educational effectiveness of these courses is unclear.

Methods: From 2017 to 2019, we investigated the educational effectiveness of a standardized 2-day hands-on POCUS training course and changes in pre- and post-course exam scores in relationship to participants’ (n = 571) clinical rank, years of POCUS experience, and frequency of POCUS use in clinical practice.

Results: The mean pre- and post-course examination scores were 67.2 (standard deviation [SD] 12.3) and 79.7 (SD 9.7), respectively. Higher pre-course examination scores were associated with higher clinical rank, more years of POCUS experience, and more frequent POCUS use (p < 0.05). All participants showed significant changes in pre- to post-course exam scores. Though pre-course scores differed by clinical rank, POCUS experience, and frequency of POCUS use, differences in post-course scores according to participant baseline differences were non-significant.

Conclusion: A standardized hands-on POCUS training course is effective for improving POCUS knowledge regardless of baseline differences in clinical rank, POCUS experience, or frequency of POCUS use. Future studies shall evaluate changes in POCUS use in clinical practice after POCUS training.

An Evaluation of Self-reported Level of Entrustment across the First Year of Clinical Practice [dataset]

This file contains the data files from each of the four surveys (Times 1 to 4), and the questionnaires used to collect the data at Time 1, and Times 2-3.

Background. Newly graduated medical students often report that they lack the skills required to care for patients, and feel unprepared for clinical practice. However, little is known about when, and if, they acquire these skills in practice.

Objective. To assess self-reported level of entrustment in, and frequency of performance of, the seven Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) comprising the EPA framework for interns in Ireland. EPAs describe discrete activities that are essential to a particular profession.

Methods. Self-report survey data were collected from doctors in the Republic of Ireland during their first year of clinical practice at four different time points during 2020/21.

Results. Response rates to the survey varied from 73.3% (126/172) at Time 1 to 25.6% (44/172) at Time 4. After 3 months, the respondents reported that they could execute all of the EPAs, inclusive of 12 essential procedural skills, with indirect supervision. As the year progressed there was an increase in the proportion of respondents reporting that they performed the EPAs at least once a week. However, the proportion of respondents performing five of the essential procedural skills (e.g. nasogastric tube insertion) remained low across all time points.

Conclusion. Consideration should be given as to how to better prepare medical students to execute these EPAs, how the interns can be better supported during the first quarter of internship. The findings from this research are positive. However, there is an urgent need to carry out formal assessments of entrustability, rather than relying on self-report.
