Ice sheet surface elevation change from ablation stake measurements on bare ice in the western Greenland ablation zone during July 2016

Measurements of ice surface elevation change from a network of twelve bamboo ablation stakes installed in the western Greenland ice sheet ablation zone (67.0496o N, 49.0201o W, 1215 m a.s.l.). Stakes were installed by drilling 3 m deep holes into the ice, inserting the bamboo stakes, and allowing them to freeze into the ice for 24 hours. Following the 24 hour freeze-in period, measurements of the distance from the top of the stake to its base were recorded at nominal 3 hour intervals continuously from 12:00 local time (UTC-2) on 6 July 2016 to 23:00 local time on 12 July 2016. Prior to each measurement, a 24×24 cm square wooden ablation board was placed at the base of the stake and oriented to true north. This board operated as a datum from which the stake height above the ice surface was measured.

Hyperspectral Imaging Dataset for Laser Thermal Ablation Monitoring in Vital Organs

Objectives: The objective of the research was to use hyperspectral imaging (HSI) to detect thermal damage induced in vital organs (such as the liver, pancreas, and stomach) during laser thermal therapy. The experimental study was conducted during thermal ablation procedures on live pigs.

Ethical Approval: The experiments were performed at the Institute for Image Guided Surgery in Strasbourg, France. This experimental study was approved by the local Ethical Committee on Animal Experimentation (ICOMETH No. 38.2015.01.069) and by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research (protocol №APAFiS-19543-2019030112087889, approved on March 14, 2019). All animals were treated in accordance with the ARRIVE guidelines, the French legislation on the use and care of animals, and the guidelines of the Council of the European Union (2010/63/EU).

Description: During our experimental study, we used a TIVITA hyperspectral camera to acquire hypercubes of size 640x480x100 voxels, indicating 640x480 pixels for 100 bands, and regular RGB images at each acquisition step. These bands were acquired directly from the hyperspectral camera without additional pre-processing. The hypercube was acquired in approximately 6 seconds and synchronized with the absence of breathing motion using a protocol implemented for animal anesthesia. Polyurethane markers were placed around the target area to serve as references for superimposing the hyperspectral images, which were acquired using target areas selected according to the hyperspectral camera manufacturer's guidelines.

As part of our investigation, we included hyperspectral cubes from 20 experiments conducted under identical conditions in our study. The hyperspectral cubes were collected in three distinct stages. In the first stage, the cubes were gathered before laparotomy at a temperature of 37°C. In the second stage, we obtained the cubes as the temperature gradually increased from 60°C to 110°C at 10°C intervals. Finally, in the last stage, the cubes were collected after turning off the laser during the post-ablation phase. Thus, we obtained a total of 233 hyperspectral cubes, each consisting of 100 wavelengths, resulting in a dataset of 23,300 two-dimensional images. The temperature changes were recorded, and the “Temperature profile during laser ablation” image illustrates the corresponding profile, highlighting the specific time intervals during which the hyperspectral camera and laser were activated and deactivated. To provide a visual representation of the collected data, we have included several examples of images captured from different organs in the “Examples of ablation areas” figure.

The raw dataset, comprising 233 hyperspectral cubes of 100 wavelengths each, was transformed into 699 single-channel images using PCA and t-SNE decompositions. These images were then divided into training and test subsets and prepared in the COCO object detection format. This COCO dataset can be used for training and testing different neural networks.

Access to the Study: Further information about this study, including curated source code, dataset details, and trained models, can be accessed through the following repositories:

Source code: https://github.com/ViacheslavDanilov/hsi_analysis

Dataset: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10444212

Models: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10444269

Mean snowpack ablation data for Green Lakes Valley, 1969 - 2005.

Lowering of the snowpack surface by ablation (melt) was estimated on a biweekly to weekly basis in the Green Lakes Valley during the summer months. Poles were driven into the snowpack to form transects in several snow-accumulation areas (east face of Arikaree Peak, talus on the north side of Kiowa Peak, rock glacier/wetland between Green Lakes 4 and 5, Arikaree Glacier, Green Lakes 4 and 5, and the Martinelli basin). The height difference (cm) between the snow surface and the top of each pole was recorded. On the subsequent visit the new height difference was recorded and the pole was driven into the snow and the reset height was recorded. Poles in a given transect were relocated as necessary during the course of the season.

Raw and analyzed data for manuscript: "Wood surface ablation and nanostructuring using a femtosecond laser"

Abstract

The processing of Norway spruce and European beech wood specimens by means of femtosecond laser pulses was investigated on conditioned natural samples as well as on samples coated with beeswax or a water-borne stain. Depending on laser pulse energies and processing times, this allowed for different modes of surface modification. At low laser intensities, an etching almost without thermal impact was detected, whereas higher laser intensities led to the generation of hierarchical micro and nanostructures. The usage of argon or atmospheric air as cover gases during the laser processing had only minor effects on the surface structures. Observed differences in the etching or functionalization of the wooden surfaces mostly originated in the chemical structure of the surface finish and the physical properties of the wood substrates, such as the density or moisture content.

Data for: "Simulation of uranium plasma plume dynamics in atmospheric oxygen produced via femtosecond laser ablation"

Data generated by 2D reactive, compressible, multi-species fluid model of uranium femtosecond laser ablation in an atmospheric oxygen environment. The dataset consists of a series of plain text tabular data files recorded at several time points during the simulation run. The data files are numbered according to the simulation time in nanoseconds (FFF-0100.txt is the data at 100 ns) and are given at intervals of 50 ns for the first 500 ns of simulation time, and every 100 ns thereafter, up to the total simulation time of 10000 ns. The initial conditions are provided in the first data file (FFF-0000.txt). Each data file contains spatially-resolved values of the fluid moments along with the molar concentrations of each species considered in the model (total of 30 species), given in a column format delimited by spaces.

For details on the model implementation and simulation conditions, please refer to the associated manuscript.
