Data from: Bat activity is related to habitat type and structure in managed pine barrens in New England
<p><strong>Background. </strong>Several insectivorous bat species are found in New England, yet research on them is still scarce. Current research shows the ecological importance of bats due to their control of insect populations, but they are endangered by habitat loss and White Nose Syndrome, among other threats. Pine barrens are an uncommon ecosystem found in New England that supports other rare taxa and could be important for these bat species.</p> <p><strong>Methods. </strong>With hand-held audio recorders, we surveyed for bats in Montague Plains Wildlife Management Area in Massachusetts and Concord Pine Barrens in New Hampshire in June 2022. Our study objectives were to 1) describe the most common bat species and 2) compare bat activity across different habitat types at two managed pine barrens in New England. In particular, we examined bat activity related to habitat type (scrub oak, mature pitch pine, treated pitch pine, hardwood forest), habitat structure (i.e., canopy closure), and time since prescribed fire. We analyzed our data through linear mixed effects modeling and Fisher’s exact tests.</p> <p><strong>Results. </strong>Overall, we were able to measure the presence of five out of the nine total species found in the area, including the endangered <em>Myotis lucifugus</em> (little brown bat). We recorded 293 bat calls, with the majority of calls from big brown bats (71%). We found significant differences (P < 0.05) in bat activity in relation to habitat types and structure. The index of bat activity was greatest in pitch pine and hardwood forests and lowest in scrub oak and treated pitch pine habitats. With preliminary data, we also found that there was more bat activity in areas that had not been burned recently.</p> <p><strong>Discussion.</strong> These findings demonstrate the importance of pine barrens as an ecosystem that supports bats in New England. According to the activity of bats in our study, closed canopy and mature pitch pine habitats may be prioritized in conservation efforts at managed barrens for bat species. Further research is recommended to better understand the relationship between prescribed fires, which are common in managed barrens, and bat activity.</p>
Data from: Earthworm activity and availability for meadow birds is restricted in intensively managed grasslands
1. Earthworms are an important prey for the endangered meadow birds of north-west Europe. Although intensive grassland management with high manure inputs generally promotes earthworm abundance, it may reduce the effective food availability for meadow birds through desiccation of the topsoil, which causes earthworms to remain deeper in the soil. 2. We studied the response of Red Worm Lumbricus rubellus, a detritivore, and Grey Worm Aporrectodea caliginosa, a geophage, to soil moisture profiles in the field and under experimental conditions. Surfacing earthworms were counted weekly in eight intensively managed grasslands (treated with high inputs of slurry by slit injection) with variable groundwater tables in the Netherlands. At each count, soil penetration resistance, soil moisture tension and groundwater level were measured, while air temperature and humidity were obtained from a nearby weather station. The response to variation in the vertical distribution of soil moisture was also experimentally studied in the two earthworm species. 3. In the field, earthworms' surfacing activity at night was negatively associated with soil moisture tension and positively by relative air humidity. Surprisingly, there was no effect of groundwater level; an important management variable in meadow bird conservation. Under experimental conditions, both L. rubellus and A. caliginosa moved to deeper soil layers (>20 cm) in drier soil moisture treatments, avoiding the upper layer when moisture levels dropped below 30%. 4. Synthesis and applications. We propose that in intensively managed grasslands with slurry application, topsoil desiccation reduces earthworm availability for meadow birds. This can be counteracted by keeping soil moisture tensions of the top soil above -15 kPa. We suggest that the late raising of groundwater tables in spring and the disturbance of the soil by slit injection of slurry increase topsoil desiccation. This decreases earthworm availability when it matters most for breeding meadow birds. Meadow bird conservation will benefit from revised manure application strategies that promote earthworm activity near or at the soil surface.

<p>1. The relationship between daily energy expenditure (DEE) and resting metabolic rate (RMR) provides insight into how organisms allocate energy to maintenance <i>versus</i> energetically expensive activities such as locomotor activity.</p> <p>2. Three models have been devised to describe energy management: the allocation, independent, and performance models, which respectively predict a DEE-RMR slope of <i>b</i><1, <i>b</i>=1, and <i>b</i>>1.</p> <p>3. Here, we took paired repeated metabolic and behavioural measurements in 51 female white-footed mice to 1) evaluate which energy management models apply at the among- and within-individual levels, and to 2) quantify the relationship between metabolic traits and two energetically expensive behaviours.</p> <p>4. The DEE-RMR slope was different at the among- <i>versus</i> within-individual levels, with values supporting the performance and allocation models at the among- and within-individual levels, respectively. Accordingly, the relationship between voluntary wheel running and RMR was positive at the among-individual level (<i>r</i><sub> </sub>= 0.40±0.21), but negative at the within-individual level (<i>r </i>= -0.23±0.10).</p> <p>5. To our knowledge, this is the first study to simultaneously partition the relationship between RMR and behaviour at the among- <i>versus</i> within-individuals levels while determining which energy management models apply at each of these levels. In doing so, we have identified a mechanism through which compensation occurs at the within-individual level.</p>
