Farmer adaptive behavior and risk management in EU agriculture
<p>Risk and risk management are essential elements of agriculture and affect the wellbeing of farm households. Farmers react to production, market and institutional risks and challenges by taking measures on or off the farm. Such risk management measures are often costly and have implications for up- and downstream industries as well as the environment. The risk exposure of European farms is increasing. For example, climate change will increase the frequency and magnitude of extreme weather events like droughts, heatwaves and heavy rainfalls that potentially have detrimental effects on agricultural production. Thus, the adaptive capacity and risk management options in European agriculture need to be improved. Policy shall support this process. Policies are needed to support a diversity of risk management solutions and not only focus on a few solutions. Strategies to cope with risk often go beyond the level of the individual farm. Cooperation, learning and sharing of risks play a vital role in European agriculture and shall be strengthened. Thus, coordinated policies targeting beyond the individual farm and considering all the stakeholders involved in the risk management strategies are needed to ensure their effective implementation. Moreover, policies need to facilitate to take full advantage of the rapid technological progress and improved data availability (e.g. based on satellite imagery) to develop a wider set of risk management strategies.</p>

LIBER 2019 Workshop. Open Access books in academic libraries – how can we adapt workflows and cost management to an open scholarly communications landscape?
<p>This dataset includes all the results from a workshop held at the LIBER Annual Conference 2019 on June 26, 2019, in Dublin, Ireland. The workshop aimed at collecting and discussing current library practices related to open access books.</p> <p>The dataset includes information from a survey made in preparation for the conference, where 67 European libraries responded to a questionnaire based on activities or workflows in libraries related to open access books. Both the survey questionnaire and the results from the survey are uploaded as separate files.</p> <p>The dataset also includes the presentation made by keynote speaker Eelco Ferwerda from the OAPEN Foundation. He presented results based on the 2017 landscape study report on open access monographs with some new results from more recent studies by Springer Nature and a follow-up report by Knowledge Exchange.</p> <p>Olaf Siegert from ZBW - Leibniz Information Centre for Economics presented a brief overview of what libraries can do to promote OA books in terms of collection management, publication services and development of staff and organisation. The conclusion is that it is not necessarily big changes that are needed.</p> <p>Sofie Wennström presented results from a survey aimed at European research libraries on behalf of the LIBER Open Access Working Group. The survey reveals that many libraries are already working with processes to promote OA books. This is done by libraries organising publishing services or inhouse publishing, by including OA books in discovery services and repositories and by supporting authors to learn more about open access and open licensing.</p> <p>Finally, the LIBER Open Access Working Group shares a report from the workshop providing some quick takeaways and some good examples brought up during the breakout session with the workshop participants.</p>

Interacting impacts of hydrological changes and air temperature warming on lake temperatures highlight the potential for adaptive management: Model output
<p>This archive includes the output from the General Ocean Turbulence Model for a series of simulations that used differing model drivers (inflow discharge, Q, and air temperature, T). The Experiment_output.zip contains text files generated from the GOTM workflow containing modelled water temperatures and the Mod_z.txt are the corresponding depths for these temperatures. </p><p>The file name corresponds to the change made to the driving data from baseline (unchanged conditions), a combination of air temperature <i>increase </i>and flow percentage change e.g. Mod_temp_T_2_Q_1.5 refers to an air temperature increase of 2 degrees Celsius and a flow increase of 50% and a Mod_temp_T_3.5_Q_0.7 refers to an air temperature increase of 3.5 degrees Celsius and a flow decrease of 30%.</p>

Genomic divergence, local adaptation, and complex demographic history may inform management of a popular sportfish species complex
<p>We investigated genomic divergence, interspecific and intraspecific diversity and population structure, local directional selection, and complex demographic history in a popular freshwater species complex in the Central Interior Highlands, North America. Specifically, we assessed differentiation between the Neosho Bass (<em>Micropterus velox</em>) and Smallmouth Bass (<em>M. dolomieu</em>) where their ranges are parapatric in this ecoregion. We scanned the genome for signatures of local direction and mapped divergence at selected SNPs at the population level. Additionally, we identified stream populations with extensive admixture, and we used a model-testing framework to investigate complex demographic histories between the two species.</p> <p>Raw ddRADseq .fastq sequence files, along with intermediate processing files, finalized VCF files, a data summary report, and other data information, are given in the "smb_ddRAD_rawdata.tar file. Metadata, including sample_id, species designation, and stream population, are given in the "metadata.xlsx" file.</p>
