The ecological and economic benefits of sustainable agricultural practices

<p><strong>Code and data for Mata et al.'s&nbsp;<em>The ecological and economic benefits of sustainable agricultural practices: Evidence from on-farm trials in broad-acre crops.&nbsp;</em></strong></p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>1. A transition to more sustainable agricultural practices is essential to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of conventional farming and to ensure long-term food security. However, widespread adoption requires robust evidence demonstrating their efficacy and economic viability.</p> <p>2. We co-designed a two-year field trial with farmers and agronomy advisors in Australia to evaluate the ecological and economic outcomes of sustainable agricultural practices for managing the redlegged earth mite, a major pest of Australian crops and pastures. We compared 'Novel' treatments &ndash; representing long-term farmer-implemented sustainable practices based on biological control &ndash; with 'Conventional' treatments, and 'Plus' treatments designed as counterfactuals to disentangle the effects of specific pest control and plant nutrient components.</p> <p>3. Redlegged earth mite densities remained below economic thresholds across all treatments and years, demonstrating effective pest control in both conventional and sustainable systems. Notably, the Novel treatment supported higher densities of beneficial arthropods, suggesting increased biological control potential.</p> <p>4. Yield and gross profit margins were generally similar across treatments, indicating that sustainable agriculture practices can maintain profitability while fostering biodiversity.</p> <p>Practical implication. Our study provides evidence that biological control and biofertiliser supplementation can be effectively used to manage agricultural pests. It also demonstrates the value of close collaboration with farmers and agronomy advisors in conducting ecological field research with real-world applications.</p>

Duhumbi Agricultural Practices - Description, Audio, Video, Photos

<p>This collection of videos, audio and photo files displays Duhumbi agricultural practices as they were conducted between 2012 and 2017. Accompanying video and picture files illustrating the text files can be found at the end of this document.</p> <p>Traditionally, the people of the Chug valley depended on a mix of agriculture and animal husbandry for their livelihoods, supplemented by hunting and collection of forest produce. The Chug valley and the Sangthi valley are the only places in West Kameng district where relatively large-scale wetland rice cultivation takes place. This rice has for long been the main item in the barter trade, as well as the main item collected as tax by the erstwhile Tibetan administration and raided by the Miji.</p> <p>Agriculture has always been the main-stay of the local economy, not just in terms of self-sufficiency, but also in terms of barter trade. The agricultural produce, mainly the rice, was bartered for other food and other items, a practice that, despite increasing monetisation of the economic system, continues till date.</p> <p>This material is made freely available to everyone for informative or scientific purposes as long as the source (this DOI) / the collectors are properly credited. Morphological and physical chemical characterization of main agricultural plastics articles used for protected cultivation systems during ageing in fields, and collection practices

<p>This dataset includes data generated upon the implementation of the ST 1.2.1 "Analysis of degradation and fragmentation of AP and transfer of MNP to soil". The activities dealt with the study of degradation and fragmentation from weathering and agricultural practices of conventional and biodegradable AP relevant for transfer of MNP to soil (during both use and end of life). In particular, the experimental data refer to characterization of biodegradable mulch films, pristine (coded M-BIO0) or subjected to photo-oxidative weathering (M-BIO192), as well as the same samples buried in soil for varying time periods, up to 353 days. The folders included contain gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and Matrix-assisted Laser Desorption Ionization (MALDI-TOF) data, which account for the change in film molecular weight upon soil burial. Furthermore, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) data and&nbsp; Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Water Contact Angle (WCA) images of some selected samples are also provided. The folder named MS RAW FILES.zip includes all the mass spectrometry raw data.</p>

An original protocol, based on specific ring infiltrometers, able to measure the temporal dynamics of soil infiltrability was used. Information flows around agricultural best management practices in central Pennsylvania

<p>This dataset was collected between February and April 2019, to assess the information network of agricultural Best-Management Practices (BMPs) in central Pennsylvania, a sub-region of the Chesapeake Bay watershed.</p> <p>It contains information flows (or "messages") relating to 16 specific BMPs, including:</p> <ul> <li>the BMP it relates to (e.g. riparian buffers, manure management planning, no-till, cover-cropping, etc.);</li> <li>the source and target of the information (actors);</li> <li>the kind of message (e.g. funding, regulation, technical assistance, etc.);</li> <li>the weight (strength) of messages (only for those received by farmers directly).</li> </ul> <p>Over 3900 messages/information flows were recorded, involving 57 actors.</p> <p>This data was used to conduct the study "Navigating agricultural nonpoint source pollution governance: A social network analysis of best management practices in central Pennsylvania".</p>

Agriculture and food system scenarios with particular focus on organic and agro-ecological farming practices in the EU

<p>This is a comprehensive dataset of the agriculture and food system scenarios co-developed with stakeholders with the agricultural land use model BioBaM-GHG 2.0 and presented in Deliverable 4.2 of the H2020 project UNISECO. It includes sub-national (NUTS1/2-level) data on agricultural production and consumption, land use, greenhouse gas emissions from livestock and agricultural activities, etc. for the base year 2012 and the scenario years 2030 and 2050. The scenarios include a Business as usual case and four scenarios with focus on organic and agro-ecological farming practices in the EU, based on different storylines. Further information is available from the above-mentioned deliverable.</p> <p>A detailed model description is provided in the paper &quot;Exploring the option space for land system futures at regional to global scales: The diagnostic agro-food, land use and greenhouse gas emission model BioBaM-GHG 2.0&quot;, in which these scenarios are also presented as an exemplary application of the model BioBaM-GHG 2.0.</p> <p>This work was funded by the ERA-NET SusAn project 101243 AnimalFuture, as well as by the European Union&rsquo;s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and its funding of the H2020 UNISECO project under grant agreement N&deg;773901.</p>

Multidecadal, continent-level analysis indicates agricultural practices impact wheat aphid loads more than climate change

<p><span>Temperature has a large influence on insect abundances, thus under climate change, identifying major drivers affecting pest insect populations is critical to world food security and agricultural ecosystem health. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis with data obtained from 120 studies across China and Europe from 1970 to 2017 to reveal how climate and agricultural practices affect populations of wheat aphids. H</span><span>ere</span><span> we showed that aphid loads on wheat had distinct patterns between these two regions, with a significant increase in China but a decrease in Europe over this time period. Although temperature increased over this period in both regions, we found no evidence showing climate warming affected aphid loads. Rather, differences in pesticide use, fertilization, land use, and natural enemies between China and Europe may be key factors accounting for differences in aphid pest populations. These long-term data suggest that agricultural practices impact wheat aphid loads more than climate warming. </span></p>

Data from: Response of non-grassland avian guilds to adjacent herbaceous field buffers: testing hypotheses about configuration of targeted conservation practices in agricultural landscapes

1. A substantial part of the world's land base is dominated by agriculture, and forest habitat often consists of discrete patches of forest and linear woody corridors. These natural components provide habitat for some forest birds, but make conservation of these species difficult. In-field practices applied outside forest patches, such as specific juxtapositions of herbaceous field buffers adjacent to forest habitat, could increase avian diversity contributions of existing forest without creation of additional forest habitat. Our prediction was that herbaceous field buffers would increase bird richness in adjacent forest, and we evaluated four potential mechanisms. 2. We used bird count data from a conservation buffer monitoring program and hierarchical community models to estimate species richness of forest generalist, forest interior, and shrubland (edge) species near forest edges with and without adjacent herbaceous field buffers. We accounted for heterogeneity in detection probabilities and forest cover in surrounding landscapes when estimating species- and guild-level responses. 3. Consistent with the drift fence hypothesis, adjacent herbaceous buffers were associated with a modest increase in richness of forest interior birds in woody corridors, but not in forest blocks. Consistent with resource complementation, adjacent herbaceous buffers were associated with modest increases in richness of shrubland (edge) birds in both woody corridors and forest blocks. 4. Across all species and guilds, adjacent buffers generally associated with greater abundance (e.g. 28 of 39 species), but these increases were also relatively small and highly variable (i.e. overlapping 95% credible intervals). Corroborating existing research, effects of adjacent herbaceous buffers are likely real, but neither pervasive nor strong. 5. Synthesis and applications. Conservation practices targeted to grassland species often produce measurable conservation benefits for target species. However, biodiversity return for investment would be further increased if targeted practices could be deployed in ways that also produce benefits for non-target species in adjacent habitats. Our results suggest that additional benefits for non-target species using adjacent forest habitat are likely to be modest, so conservation planning should focus on species targeted by the conservation practices and avoidance of potential negative impacts on those species when positive benefits to adjacent habitat are weak or lacking.

Agronomic and Environmental Performance of Lemnaminor Cultivated on Agricultural Wastewater Streams—A Practical Approach

<p>This study investigated the potential of&nbsp;Lemna minor&nbsp;to valorise agricultural wastewater in protein-rich feed material in order to meet the growing demand for animal feed protein and reduce the excess of nutrients in certain European regions. For this purpose, three pilot-scale systems were monitored for 175 days under outdoor conditions in Flanders. The systems were fed with the effluent of aquaculture (pikeperch production&mdash;PP), a mixture of diluted pig manure wastewater (PM), and a synthetic medium (SM). PM showed the highest productivity (6.1 &plusmn; 2.5 g DW m<sup>&minus;2</sup>&nbsp;d<sup>&minus;1</sup>) and N uptake (327 &plusmn; 107 mg N m<sup>&minus;2</sup>&nbsp;d<sup>&minus;1</sup>). PP yielded a similar productivity and both wastewaters resulted in higher productivities than SM. Furthermore, all media showed similar P uptake rates (65&ndash;70 P m<sup>&minus;2</sup>&nbsp;d<sup>&minus;1</sup>). Finally, duckweed had a beneficial amino acid composition for humans (essential amino acid index = 1.1), broilers and pigs. This study also showed that the growing medium had more influence on the productivity of duckweed than on its amino acid composition or protein content, with the latter being only slightly affected by the different media studied. Overall, these results demonstrate that duckweed can effectively remove nutrients from agriculture wastewaters while producing quality protein.</p>

Large-scale homogenization of soil bacterial communities in response to agricultural practices in paddy fields, China

<div>This dataset contains data from 257 sites in four typical rice-growing regions across a 4,000-km transect in China, including geographic location data and environment factors data.</div> <div> <br> The study was conducted across a 4,000-km transect of China's rice-growing areas, from Heilong Jiang province to Yunnan province (100°55′ E to 134°08′° E, 22°46′ N to 48°02′ N, Table S1). Four typical rice-growing regions were selected along this transect: Sanjiang Plain (modern mechanical farming), Taihu Plain (mechanical plus minor manual farming), Lianghu Plain (manual plus minor mechanical farming), and Hani Terrace (traditional manual farming).</div> <div> <br> Field sampling was conducted during July and August in 2014 and 2015. Soil samples were collected from 178 flooded paddy fields and 79 surrounding non-paddy areas across four typical rice-growing regions of China. At each site, one homogenized sample was obtained, which was then separated into two parts. One part, which was obtained for DNA extraction, was placed into a sterile plastic tube then immediately placed in liquid nitrogen for short-term transportation. After shipping to the laboratory, these tubes were stored at −80 °C. The second part of the soil sample was placed into a plastic bag and stored at 4.0 °C for determining the soil physicochemical properties.</div> <div> <br> Main results of the experiments are that: (1) Distance–decay patterns of bacterial communities in paddy fields revealed reduced β-diversity compared to surrounding natural habitats. (2) Modern rice farming practices (plowing with machines) caused stronger homogenization of soil bacterial communities than traditional farming (plowing by hand). Among the four paddy regions, plowing by hand retained the highest soil bacterial β-diversity. (3) Moreover, a significant inverse correlation was observed between bacterial β-diversity and the agricultural mechanization level. (4) Among multiple environmental factors, dramatic spatial homogenization of soil physicochemical properties, particularly soil nutrient contents, and reduced dispersal limitation caused by modern farming activities both strongly predict a reduction of bacterial β-diversity in modern paddy fields.</div>
