Artificial Communities Experiment: Alder Seedlings

This study considers the relative role of competition and facilitation in primary succession of the boreal forest floodplain of Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest. Alder (Alnus tenuifolia Nutt.) is an early colonist of young floodplain sites, where it contributes greatly to soil development through the addition of nitrogen to the soil. White spruce (Picea glauca (Moench.) Voss) typically colonizes such sites later; it becomes established beneath a canopy of alder and willow (Salix spp.) which is sometimes overtopped by young balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera L.). The alder may potentially influence white spruce both positively and negatively. Possible facilitative effects include protection of small seedlings from excess heat or heavy siltation accompanying flooding and addition of soil nitrogen, an effect that may extend for many years. Competition for light (and other resources) before the white spruce has overtopped the alder canopy may prove to be a major negative effects. This study seeks to determine the net balance of these effects on the floodplain successional sequence.

Soil enzyme activities and soil chemistry near and away from alder collected at sites along the Sagavanirktok River, BNZ LTER sites UP3a-c, and sites near BNZ LTER site WDI6, collected June and July 2019

This dataset contains the data and R code associated with Heslop et al. 2021 "Soil Enzymes Illustrate the Effects of Alder Nitrogen Fixation on Soil Carbon Processes in Arctic and Boreal Ecosystems" published in Ecosphere. Activities of acid phosphatase, beta-glucosidase, and phenoloxidase, as well as %N, C, P, and Mo, 15N and 13C natural abundance, resin extractable P, and SOM chemsitry using FTIR spectroscopy were measured for soils taken under alder (Alnus viridis ssp. fruticosa) canopies and 5 m away. Samples were collected in the Arctic at sites near Sagwon Bluffs and the Lupine-Sagavanirktok river confluence as well as in the boreal forest at BNZ LTER sites UP3a-c and at sites located near BNZ LTER site WDI6.

Patterns of and controls over nitrogen inputs by green alder (Alnus viridis spp. fruticosa) to a secondary successional chronosequence in interior Alaska I - N2 Fixation and Soil Temperature

We measured rates of nitrogen fixation by Alnus viridis spp. fruticosa and concurrent subcanopy soil temperature at BNZ LTER. To do so we utilized replicate (n=3/stage) stands of a seral sequence of successional stages maintained by the Bonanza Creek Long-Term Ecological Research program (BNZ LTER). At each of the 9 replicate stands we selected a total of 70 individual shrubs. During each of 7 sampling periods, 3 across the growing season of 1997 and 4 during 1998, we randomly selected 10 of 70 A. viridis spp. fruticosa at each replicate stand. We used acetylene reduction assays (ARA) to estimate rates of N2 fixation at each of the selected shrubs and concurrently measured soil temperature at each shrub. The attached database may be utilized to (1) elucidate seasonal trends in rates of N2 fixation by A. viridis spp. fruticosa across a boreal forest chronosequence and (2) investigate soil temperature controls over rates of N2 fixation. It may also be used to statistically analyze differences between years, successional stages and replicates within successional stage in both rates of ARA and temperature. We developed this database to describe seasonal trends of rates of nitrogen fixation by A. viridis spp. fruticosa across a boreal forest chronosequence and to elucidate soil temperature controls over rates.

Summary of environmental and stand characteristics of thinleaf alder sites along the Tanana River floodplains from 2006-2007.

This dataset contains a summary of environmental and stand characteristics of thinleaf alder dominated along the Tanana River floodplains. Environmental data for each site include terrace height, total thickness of organic layers, depth of uppermost organic layer, soil pH, soil C, N, and P, and soil N/P ratio. Also included are mean thinleaf alder foliar C, N, and P concentrations and foliar N/P ratio for a sumbsample of sites. Estimates of stand age, based on the age of the oldest alder, are available for a subsample of sites. Other stand characteristics include canopy cover, stem density and basal area of thinleaf alder, willows, balsam poplar, and white spruce, and % of alder stems infected with a fungal stem canker at various degrees of disease severity.

This dataset includes the stem diameter of each woody plant >2m tall, by species (or genus), found in each of the thinleaf alder sites we established in the Tanana River floodplains in 2006, as well as an assessment of the severity of canker infection in each thinleaf alder stem. Species (or genus), diameter at breast height (dbh), and severity of canker infection are the variables included here. This dataset can be used in conjunction with a dataset of alder size/age relationships (DN_alder_stand_structure2.xls) to estimate the age structure of alder stands.

Thinleaf alder stands on the Tanana River floodplains, sampled in 2006 and 2007: A subsample of thinleaf alder stems were aged using tree-ring analysis, and the age structures of alder populations were estimated from their size structures (DN_alder_stand_structure1), based on the size/age relationships derived from this dataset. Relationships between disease incidence/severity and size/age were also explored. Included in this dataset are: the stem diameter at breast height (dbh), age of stem at ground level, age at breast height, and disease severity.

This dataset contains a summary of plant species composition and abundance data from thinleaf alder sites along the Tanana River floodplains in 2006. This includes stem counts by species (or genus) for all woody plants less then 2m in height (both separated by dbh size class and combined), stem counts by species for all woody plants greater then 2m in height, percent cover of each forb and graminoid species, mosses, and lichens, and percent of bare ground. The presence or absence of moose and snowshoe hare feces are also indicated.

Standardized ring-width chronologies of thinleaf alder growth along the Tanana River floodplains spanning 1968-2006.

This dataset contains landscape level and site level standardized ring-width chronologies (1968-2006) of thinleaf alder growth along the Tanana River floodplains. The raw tree ring-width series from each alder disk was individually detrended to remove age-related growth trends. The chronologies represent the high-frequency variation in ring-width to be analyzed at the inter-annual time scale.

Carbon Dynamics Along a Permafrost Gradient at Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed (CPCRW) in Interior Alaska: Specific Leaf Area (SLA) for alder (Alnus crispa) and black spruce (Picea mariana) in a 75x75m spatial domain along a permafrost and vegetation gradient.

This dataset includes specific leaf area (SLA) data for two dominant tree species in the Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed: alder (Alnus crispa) and black spruce (Picea mariana). Up to 10 leaf samples were collected per species per sampling location. Project summary: Specific leaf area (SLA, leaf area per unit dry mass) is a key canopy structural characteristic, a measure of photosynthetic capacity, and an important input into many terrestrial process models. Although many studies have examined SLA variation, relatively few data exist from high latitude, climate-sensitive permafrost regions. We measured SLA and soil and topographic properties across a boreal forest permafrost transition, in which forest composition changed as permafrost deepened from 54 to >150 cm over 75 m hillslope transects in Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed, Alaska. This is an exploratory study to begin understanding SLA variation and controls thereof in a non-contiguous permafrost system.

This dataset includes depth-resolved soils data from September 2014 coring: soil pH, gravimetric soil moisture, roots/rocks, bulk density, humification indices as determined by FTIR, total elemental composition (carbon, nitrogen, sulfur), depth to mineral horizon, thickness of the moss layer, percent groundcover at the sampling location of several common species, and soil temperature at the time of coring.
