Alexithymia disrupts verbal short-term memory
<p>While some research have now started to show long-term memory (LTM) deficits in</p> <p>alexithymia, short-term memory (STM) remained largely unexplored. We investigated</p> <p>whether the STM trace for emotion and neutral words might also be disrupted by</p> <p>alexithymia. Forty four participants were randomly assigned to study 1 in which the</p> <p>to-be-memorized 6-words lists were composed of words belonging to the same</p> <p>valence (i.e., pure lists condition, Study 1) and 44 other participants were randomly</p> <p>assigned to study 2 in which 6-words lists were composed of embedded neutral and</p> <p>emotional words (i.e., mixed lists condition). All the participants completed the</p> <p>Toronto-Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and a current mood states scale (PANAS).</p> <p>Results showed that a main effect of Alexithymia was observed in the pure lists</p> <p>condition while no alexithymia groups effect emerged in the mixed lists condition. In</p> <p>the pure lists condition only, correlation analyses confirmed that alexithymia</p> <p>significantly and negatively correlated with recall accuracy. The results are discussed</p> <p>with regard to the influence of alexithymia on the proposed role of 1) semantic</p> <p>organization of LTM on STM performance in the pure lists condition, and 2)</p> <p>attentional capture by emotion words in the mixed lists condition.</p>

Can emerging technologies be effective in improving alexithymia due to brain lesion?
<p>About 66% of stroke survivors present with cognitive or physical consequences, which are often complicated by emotional instability. Alexithymia is defined as “a difficulty in identifying and describing feelings”, although there is no consensus on the exact diagnosis and treatment. A 36-year-old right-handed man, affected by ischemic stroke (which occurred about 3 months before admission) involving the right hemisphere (ie, the fronto-parieto-temporal region) with left hemiparesis and behavioral abnormalities, came to our observation for intensive rehabilitation. He was treated unsuccessfully with a traditional and behavioral training. Alexithymia due to ischemic stroke. Then, a specific combined protocol using computerized emotional and virtual emotional training was applied in a semi-immersive virtual reality environment using the BTS-Nirvana device. At the end of this novel rehabilitation approach, the patient showed a significant improvement in emotional skills, cognitive performances, and coping strategies. Virtual reality, in addition to standard therapy, may be a valuable tool in improving emotional abnormalities due to brain lesions, such as alexithymia.</p>

The impact of family alexithymia on the severity of restrictive eating disorders in adolescent patients
<p>Introduction</p> <p>This database includes the raw data linked with the paper “The impact of family alexithymia on the severity of restrictive eating disorders in adolescent patients”. The study aimed to explore the correlation between levels of alexithymia in mothers and fathers of adolescents affected by REDs and patients’ capability to recognize their own emotions. The study also aimed to evaluate if patients’ emotional distress can have a significant impact on the severity of the disorder measured by the Clinical Global Impression Scale - Severity (CGI-S) and the Children’s Global Assessment Scale (CGAS).</p> <p>The dataset includes mothers, fathers and patients’ TAS-20 scores and subscales, diagnoses, and CGI-S and CGAS scores.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Sixty-seven families of adolescents affected by REDs were enlisted in the present study. Parents and patients’ levels of alexithymia were assessed by the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). We measured severity through CGI-S and functioning using CGAS.</p> <p>Results (in brief)</p> <p>This study shows a statistically significant correlation between mothers and patients’ levels of alexithymia. Fathers and mothers’ TAS scores correlate with each other. There is not a statistically significant relationship between the influence of the TAS scores of fathers and sons/daughters. In conclusion, mothers’ level of alexithymia could influence both fathers and patients’ difficulty in identifying and describing their own emotions. This relationship can be explored in more detail considering externally oriented thinking. Patients’ alexithymia levels do not influence the eating disorder severity based on CGI-S and CGAS.</p>
Alexithymia, resilience, somatic sensations and their relationships with suicide ideation in drug naïve patients with first-episode major depression: An exploratory study in the "real world" everyday clinical practice
<p>Alexithymia, resilience, somatic sensations and their<br> relationships with suicide ideation in drug naïve patients<br> with first-episode major depression: An exploratory study<br> in the “real world” everyday clinical practice</p> <p> </p> <p>Aim: The present study is aimed at revaluating alexithymia, somatic sensations, resilience<br> and their relationships with suicide ideation in drug naïve adult outpatients suffering<br> from first episode major depression (MD).<br> Methods: Data of 103 adult outpatients (49 men, 56 women) with a diagnostic and<br> statistical manual of mental disorders, 4th edition, text revision (DSM-IV-TR) diagnosis<br> of MD were analysed. Alexithymia was measured using the 20-item Toronto<br> Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and resilience with the 25 items Connor-Davidson Resilience<br> Scale (CD-RISC) whereas depression was evaluated using the 17-item Hamilton<br> Depression Rating Scale, somatic sensations with the Body Sensations Questionnaire<br> and suicide ideation with Scale of Suicide Ideation (SSI).</p> <p>Results: Gender comparisons between all demographic and clinical variables showed<br> no significant differences in all variables. Subjects who were found positive for<br> alexithymia showed higher scores on all clinical variables controlling for age, gender<br> and duration of the current episode. In a linear regression model, lower scores on<br> CD-RISC and Difficulty in Identifying Feelings dimension of TAS-20 were significantly<br> predictive of higher scores on SSI.<br> Conclusions: Alexithymia and low resilience were significant predictors of increased<br> suicide ideation in a first MD episode. However, study limitations must be considered<br> and future research needs are being discussed.</p>

<p>Alexithymia, suicide ideation, affective<br> temperaments and homocysteine levels in drug<br> naïve patients with post-traumatic stress disorder:<br> an exploratory study in the everyday ‘real world’<br> clinical practice</p> <p> </p> <p>Objective: The present exploratory study aimed to investigate relationships between alexithymia, suicide<br> ideation, affective temperaments and homocysteine levels among drug-naïve adult outpatients with Post-<br> Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in an everyday ‘real world’ clinical setting.<br> Method: Sixty-four adult outpatients with PTSD were evaluated using the Davidson Trauma Scale (DTS),<br> the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS–20), the Scale of Suicide Ideation (SSI), the Temperament Evaluation<br> of the Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego-Autoquestionnaire. As well, homocysteine levels were<br> measured.<br> Results: Alexithymic subjects showed higher values on all scales but not homocysteine levels. Partial correlations<br> showed that almost all studied variables were correlated with each other, except homocysteine<br> levels. Regression analysis showed that higher disorder severity as measured by DTS and TAS-20<br> ‘Difficulty in Identifying Feelings’ dimension was associated with higher SSI scores.<br> Conclusions: In conclusion, alexithymic PTSD outpatients may be characterised by higher disorder severity<br> and difficulty in identifying feelings that may be linked to increased suicide ideation, regardless of<br> affective temperaments or homocysteine levels. Homocysteine levels were not related to any studied variable.<br> However, study limitations are discussed and must be considered.</p>
