Algae, and Seagrass Coverage Relative to Presence of Sargassum in a Seagrass Meadow within Crandon Park, Florida, USA, March 2024 – March 2025

This package contains data on percent coverage of sargassum, seagrass, and algae recorded along 3 transects extending from the shoreline of Crandon Park, Florida from 2024-03-07 to 2025-03-26 as part of the Coastal Ecosystem-Research Experience for Teachers (CE-BIORETS) program. The data also include epiphyte-cover scores and water visibility, temperature, and salinity values. We placed a m^2 quadrat on the seafloor at 5-meter intervals along three 50-meter transects extending from the shoreline. We then recorded percent coverage of seagrass, algae, and sargassum taxa (to genus or species) and the epiphyte load within the quadrat. We also recorded water visibility, temperature, and salinity at the water surface along the transect. We collected these data to investigate the impact sargassum has on native seagrass meadows. Concentration–discharge relationships of chlorophyll describe the origin and fluxes of river algae across ecoregions

Since 2017, the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) program provides an extensive network of automated instruments and field sampling at 34 different aquatic sites across the U.S. NEON data provides a rare opportunity to combine high-frequency measurements from sensors with physical samples collected at multiples sites from different biomes. Such combination of data is frequently available only for 1, or few, sites. NEON provides the necessary data to translate some of the methods and research previously applied to single sites to a large spatial and temporal scale. Our approach in this study was to obtain all the available and reliable data from NEON aquatic sites, and analyze high frequency measurements of Chlorophyl a (Chl a) concentration and turbidity during high flows with a common analytical procedure. Then, we relate these high flow patterns to watershed conditions and algal communities to elucidate the controls on river phytoplankton communities and fluxes. The data provided here summarizes multiple storm characteristics and C-Q metrics (hysteresis index) for Chl a and turbidity for several high flow events at 26 different NEON stream and river sites.

Phytoplankton, benthic algae, and associated environmental data from Lake Okeechobee, Florida, USA, August 2023 - November 2023

This data package contains phytoplankton, periphytometer, and environmental data collected from the South Florida Water Management District’s (SFWMD) Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) monitoring sites and the Indian Prairie marsh during the 2023 rainy season. We collected phytoplankton from a surface water grab and benthic algae from artificial substrates (periphytometers) that were placed outside for three weeks. We also collected associated nutrient measurements and environmental data. Collections occurred twice from August to November 2023. Data were collected to better understand how phytoplankton and benthic algae differed in their responses to TN:TP ratios in a hypereutrophic lake known to have spatial differences in limiting nutrients. Data collection for this data package is complete.

<p>The present dataset is the output of the project Euro Trans Bio @lgawarning (ETB-2017-028).</p> <p>@lgawarning amied to develop a web platform to collect all the water sample information obtained, i.e. algal cell type, number and toxicity potential, in order to rapidly observe Harmful Algal Bloom (HABs) distribution and&nbsp;risk.</p> <p>The&nbsp;project consisted&nbsp;of the design and development of a&nbsp;portable integrated hardware/software system for in situ monitoring of algal cells consisting of a glass plankton counting chamber, a portable microscpe to be used with a smartphone (DIPLE) and a specific mobile application for the acquisition and management of images. This system&nbsp;allow to view and photograph, in real time and&nbsp;in situ, individual microalgae and discriminating them from other non-hazardous organisms or organic matter (e.g. pollens). Images are&nbsp;automatically tracked on a dedicated&nbsp;web platform for&nbsp;data collection and analysis.</p> <p>The system was then adopted for mass use in&nbsp;the citizen-science activity of NAUTILOS project (European Union&rsquo;s Horizon 2020 101000825)</p>

These data describe annual estimates of the percent cover, abundance, and species richness (evaluated as species density) of benthic macroalgae and macroinvertebrates from replicate transects at three subtidal reefs. Data collection began in 2009 at an artificial reef (Wheeler North Reef in Orange County, CA) and two natural reference reefs (San Mateo Kelp in Orange County, CA and Barn Kelp in San Diego County, CA) to evaluate the ability of Wheeler North Reef to compensate for losses of kelp forest habitat and associated biota caused by the operation of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).

Characterization of Water Quality, Nutrients, and Algae Under Ice in the St. Louis River Estuary 2013 - 2018

This data package includes physical, chemical, and biological measurements characterizing under-ice and early open-water conditions in the St. Louis River Estuary—a freshwater estuary located at the western tip of Lake Superior. Data were collected annually during February and March from 2013 to 2018, with additional sampling in May and June 2018. Sampling sites were distributed across the estuary to assess spatial variability and investigate potential hypoxia. Field data include in situ water quality measurements (e.g., temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH), light penetration, and snow and ice thickness. Laboratory analyses were conducted on collected samples to quantify nutrients, suspended sediment, and chlorophyll-a concentrations. Phytoplankton samples were collected using plankton nets and preserved in Lugol’s solution for taxonomic identification. Sampling and analysis followed EPA and USGS Standard Methods where applicable to ensure compatibility with other environmental datasets. This dataset fills a critical gap in winter limnology by providing rare observations of under-ice estuarine conditions. It supports ecological research, environmental monitoring, and comparative studies of seasonal dynamics, nutrient cycling, and primary producer communities in Great Lakes coastal wetlands and other northern freshwater systems. The dataset is complete and not ongoing, although data acquired through the System-wide Monitoring Program at the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve is complementary and ongoing.

Benthic algae and sessile invertebrate survey data from LTER and other reef ecosystems

Understanding factors that influence ecological stability is a key question in ecology. Population ecology has highlighted that synchrony within a species across locations is an important indicator of species stability. Community ecology, in contrast, has highlighted that asynchrony between species within a location may enhance the stability of aggregate properties (such as total productivity). We compiled LTER and other data across 20 metacommunities in grassland and coastal marine biomes to integrate population and community approaches to synchrony to understand drivers of ecosystem stability at different scales. All datasets feature long-term (10-34 years) measurements of the primary producer community across multiple (6-49) discrete plots, with taxonomic identifications to species in most or all cases. This data package contains data from coastal marine sites: Santa Barbara Coastal LTER; Moorea Coral Reef; US Virgin Islands; Maui, Hawaii; and the Florida Keys.

Relative soft algae data collected between September 2005 and November 2011 "The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) focuses on “getting the water right” in the south Florida ecosystem—getting the right amount of water of the right quality to the right places at the right time" (USACE & DoI, 2015. Central and Southern Florida Project Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan) in the Everglades ecosystems. To inform CERP, since February 2005 we have been investigating the spatio-temporal variations of distribution, biomass and diversity of algae (key aquatic primary producers) in periphyton mats in relation to hydrology, nutrients and pH, and other environmental conditions.

Green algae, cyanobacteria and diatom concentrations from the GCE-LTER Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment (SALTEx) Project

SALTEx (Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment) is a field experiment designed to simulate saltwater intrusion in a tidal freshwater wetland to predict how chronic (Press) and acute (Pulse) salinization will affect this and other tidal freshwater ecosystems. The SALTEx experiment was initiated in 2012 and consists of 31 field plots , each 2.5 m on a side. There are three treatments (Press, Pulse, and Fresh) and two types of controls (with and without sides), each consisting of six replicates. The Press treatment plots receive regular (4 times each week) additions of a mixture of seawater and fresh river water. Pulse plots receive the same mixture of seawater and river water during September and October, which is historically a time of low flow in the river when natural saltwater intrusion occurs. The Fresh treatment plots receive regular additions of fresh river water. Treatment water is added during low tide to facilitate its infiltration into the soil, and all plots are inundated by astronomical tides at high tide. We are measuring the abundance of benthic algae with a BenthoTorch as one of the response variables for the SALTEx project.

Enclosure/exclosure experiments in a montane Puerto Rican stream examining direct and indirect effects of two dominant taxa of atyid (Atyidae) shrimp, Atya lanipes Holthius and Xiphocaris elongata Guerin-Meneville (Shrimp/ Algae/ Oecologia (1993))

Freshwater shrimp dominate the faunal biomass of many tropical headwater streams: however, their role in community organization is unclear. Enclosure/exclosure experiments in a montane Puerto Rican stream examined direct and indirect effects of two dominant taxa of atyid (Atyidae) shrimp, Atya lanipes Holthius and Xiphocaris elongata Guerin-Meneville. Both shrimp taxa caused significant reductions in sediment cover on rock substrata, reducing sedimentation and enhancing algal biovolume on clay tiles in cages. When tiles incubated in shrimp exclosures for 2 wks were placed outside of cages, atyid shrimp removed 100% of sediment cover within a 30 min. observation period. Atyid shrimp appear to play an important role in stream recovery after high discharge events in rapidly removing sediments and detritus deposited on benthic substrata in pools. We evaluated the mechanism by which A. lanipes influences algae and benthic insects by comparing patterns of algal biomass, taxonomic composition and shrimp-presence treatments both with and without manual sediment removal. The shrimp exclusion treatment without manual sediment removal had significantly lower algal biomass and greater sedimentation than all other treatments. The treatment in which shrimp were excluded but sediment was manually removed, however, accrued almost the same algal biovolume as the shrimp enclosure treatment, supporting the hypothesis that sediment removal enhances the biovolume of understory algal taxa. Algal community composition was similar between stream bottom bedrock exposed to natural densities of shrimp and all experimental treatments for both Atya and Xiphocaris: a diatom community strongly dominated (78-95%) by the adnate taxon, Achnanthes lanceolata Breb ex. Kutz. Atyid shrimp are important in determining the distribution and abundance of benthic insects through both direct and indirect effects. Bisley Watershed 3 and Quebrada Prieta Algae Monitoring

The LTER is conducting annual monitoring of Algae, Chlorophyll a, benthic organic matter, and benthic inorganic matter in order to document baseline stream characteristics. These data may be used to examine effects of disturbances such as hurricanes on stream ecosystems. MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Landscape-scale patterns of nutrient enrichment in a coral reef ecosystem: implications for coral to algae phase shifts, Adam et al., Ecol. Appl.

These data and analyses code were generated in support of the manuscript: Adam TC, Burkepile DE, Holbrook SJ, Carpenter RC, Claudet J, Loiseau C, Thiault L, Brooks, AJ, Washburn L, and RJ Schmitt, Ecological Applications We investigated the potential role of anthropogenic nutrient loading in driving recent coral-to-macroalgae phase shifts on reefs in the lagoons surrounding Moorea, French Polynesia. We used nitrogen (N) tissue content and stable isotopes (δ15N) in an abundant macroalga (Turbinaria ornata) together with empirical models of nutrient discharge to describe spatial and temporal patterns of nutrient enrichment in the lagoons. Turbinaria ornata were collected at 190 sites around Moorea in January, May, and August 2016. These sampling periods corresponded with distinct seasonal shifts in rainfall and wave forcing. Our results revealed that patterns of N enrichment were linked to rainfall, wave-driven circulation, and distance from anthropogenic nutrient sources, especially human sewage. In addition to describing high resolution patterns of N enrichment from 2016, we also analyzed core MCR time series on N tissue content in Turbinaria ornata from three habitats (fringing reef, back reef, and reef crest) at the six core MCR LTER sites between 2007 and 2013. These data showed that fringing reefs have been consistently enriched in N relative to back reefs, which are enriched relative to the reef crest. Further, these patterns mirror long-term patterns of nitrate and nitrite concentrations in the water column. We also analyzed core MCR time series on benthic communities and fishes and found that back reef sites that were consistently enriched in N between 2007 and 2013 experienced large increases in macroalgae while macroalgae remained much less abundant at back reef sites with lower N. MCR LTER: Coral Reef Resilience: Algae, Coral, and Sediment data from Grazing Intensity Experiment, 2010 - 2012

These data describe the percent cover of benthic space holders (primarily algae), the biomass of algae and sediment, and the number of corals recruiting on 15 cm X 15 cm terra cota tiles experimentally manipulated on the forereef on the north shore of Moorea. The experiment was established to test whether and how different levels of grazing influence benthic community development. Five treatments were initially established to create a gradient in grazing pressure with a sixth treatment established shortly thereafter. Each treatment was replicated ten times using a randomized block design. Each cage initially contained four tiles, and one tile from each cage has been photographed and destructively sampled for biomass at regular intervals. In addition to the original tiles deployed in July 2010, tiles were subsequently deployed in March 2011, August 2011, and March 2012 to test whether community development varies among seasons.
