Identification of an altitudinal migration pattern of Abies pinsapo in the Baetic Mountains through the presence of its life stages

<p>This data set is used to explore the altitudinal shift of <em>Abies pinsapo</em> Boiss. in the Baetic System. We analysed the potential distribution of the realised and reproductive niches of <em>A. pinsapo</em> populations in the Ronda Mountains (Southern Spain) by using species distribution models (SDMs) for two life stages within the current populations. The realised and reproductive niches of <em>A. pinsapo</em> are different to one another, which may indicate a displacement in its altitudinal distribution.</p>

Data set: Land use and land cover change in a tropical mountain landscape of northern Ecuador: altitudinal patterns and driving forces

<p>Tropical mountain ecosystems are threatened by land use pressures, compromising their capacity to provide multiple ecosystem services. The analysis of landscape changes and their proximate driving forces is often qualitative and sectorial oriented, although local patterns and numerous interactions among socio-economic, demographic, and biophysical factors shape these socio-ecological systems. We characterized land use land cover (LULC) dynamics using Markov-chain probabilities by elevation and geographic settings and then, implementing the DPSIR holistic approach, we integrated them with a variety of freely available geospatial and temporal data into a Generalized Additive Model (GAM) to uncover the factors driving such landscape dynamics in a sensitive region of the northern Ecuadorian Andes. Our results demonstrated a dynamic and clear geographical pattern of distinct LULC transitions through time, explained by different combination of socio-economic factors, demographic and infrastructure variables and environmental parameters, from which topographic variables were the main drivers of change in this landscape. We found that deforestation of remnant native forest and agricultural expansion still occur in higher elevations, while land conversion toward anthropic environments, particularly significant expansion of floriculture and urban areas were observed in lower elevations to the east of the studied territory. Our findings also revealed an unexpected stability trend of paramo and a successional recovery of previous agricultural land to the west and center of the territory, which could be explained by agricultural land abandonment. However, the very low probability of persistence of montane forests found overall, highlights the greater threat to permanently lose the already vulnerable mountain native biodiversity. The methodological approach and our findings, demonstrating dynamic patterns through space and time and their explanatory drivers, could help local authorities and stakeholder to improve sustainably resource land management in vulnerable landscapes such as the tropical Andes in northern Ecuador.</p>

New insights into the patterns and drivers of avian altitudinal migration from a growing crowdsourcing data source

Altitudinal migration is a common and important but understudied behavior in birds. Difficulty in characterizing avian altitudinal migration has prevented a comprehensive understanding of this behavior. To address this, we investigated the altitudinal migration patterns and explored potential drivers for a major proportion (~70%) of the entire resident bird community along an almost 4,000 m elevational gradient on the main island of Taiwan. Based on the occurrence records collected by citizen scientists, we examined the seasonal shifts in the center and the upper and lower boundaries of elevational distributions for 104 individual species. We then built phylogeny-controlled regression models to investigate the associations between the birds' seasonal distribution shifts and seven of their traits, and examined whether the observed shifts can be explained by three main hypotheses on potential drivers. Results showed that at least 60 species (58%) seasonally changed their distributions along elevations. While most of them (42 species) tended to move downhill in winter, a considerable number of species (14) tended to move uphill. While the species breeding at high or low elevations tended to move downhill in winter, those breeding at medium-low elevations tended to move or extend their distributions to higher elevations. Our regression models suggested that seasonal variations in climates and food availability could be major drivers of the behavior. However, the three hypotheses can only partially explain the observed downhill migration patterns and none of them can well explain the uphill patterns, indicating an important knowledge gap. This study investigated avian altitudinal migration from a new perspective with a novel and generalizable approach, and revealed interesting patterns that could be difficult to identify with conventional approaches. It demonstrated the power of citizen science data to provide new insights into this behavior by characterizing the general patterns and mechanisms across a large number of species.

Data from: Drivers of tropical rainforest composition and alpha diversity patterns over a 2,520 m altitudinal gradient

We determined the relationship of forest composition and alpha diversity (species diversity of a local assemblage) to altitude, soil and spatial factors over a 440 - 2950 ma.s.l gradient. Altitudinal gradient on the Atlantic slope of the Talamanca Cordillera, Costa Rica. We measured and identified all stems &gt; 10 cm dbh in 32 0.25-ha undisturbed rain forest plots over the gradient. We determined compositional patterns using Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMS) ordination, and used linear regressions to explore the relationship between four alpha diversity metrics and altitude. With variation partitioning (VARPART) we determined the compositional variation explained by altitude, soil and spatial variables quantified using Principle Components of Neighbour matrices. We identified 425 species. NMS axis 1 separated a lowland zone (440-1120 m asl) from a transitional one dominated by holarctic Oreomunnea mexicana (1400-1600 m asl) and Quercus-dominated forests at altitudes &gt;2100 m asl. The lowland zone was separated into two clusters of plots on NMS axis 2, the first in the 430-620 m asl range and the second at 1000-1120 masl. . Regressions showed that alpha diversity metrics were strongly negatively related to altitude (R2&gt;0.78). Overall adjusted R2 from VARPART was 0.43, with 0.30, 0.21 and 0.17 for altitude, soil and space respectively. The respective adjusted R2 of individual matrices, on controlling for the other two, were 0.06, 0.05 and 0.09 (p&lt;0.001). There are two well-defined forest compositional zones on this gradient – lowlands and montane forests – with a transitional zone at 1400-1600 m asl where lowland tropical and montane holarctic species are found together. Montane forests are very distinct in their composition and low alpha diversity. Vegetation and soil respond to altitude, and therefore temperature, as an integrated system, a model that goes beyond niche assembly as shown by the significant effect of space in the VARPART.

Patterns and drivers of soil surface-dwelling Oribatida diversity along an altitudinal gradient on the Changbai Mountain, China

<p>Distribution patterns of biodiversity and environmental interactions are dominant themes in ecology. In montane ecosystems, biodiversity is closely associated with altitudinal gradients. However, studies of biodiversity in montane ecosystems is focused on plants and vertebrates, with relatively less on invertebrates. Here, the present study used a Vortis arthropod suction sampler to explore the biodiversity patterns of soil surface-dwelling Oribatida and their drivers along an altitudinal gradient (600 m, 800 m, 1600 m, 2000 m, and 2300 m) from typically temperate forests, evergreen coniferous forests, subalpine birch forests to alpine tundra on the north slope of Changbai Mountain, Northeast China. <em>Trichoribates berlesei, Platynothrus peltifer,</em> and <em>Oribatula tibialis</em> were the dominant soil surface-dwelling species on Changbai Mountain. Generally, alpha diversity and beta diversity of soil surface-dwelling Oribatida decreased with the rising altitude, with a peaking density value at 2000 m. The result of beta diversity showed that the structuring of the community was more influenced by the species turnover component than the nestedness component. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordination showed that the community structure of soil surface-dwelling Oribatida varied significantly along the altitudinal gradient. The variance partitioning showed that the elevation and climatic conditions determined the soil surface-dwelling Oribatida community. Spatial filtering represented by geographic and elevation distances was particularly associated with soil surface-dwelling Oribatida community variation between altitudes on Changbai Mountain. However, the variation of the Oribatida community between adjacent altitudes was only associated with geographic distance. Our study provides supportive evidence for the biodiversity analyzing of soil surface-dwelling Oribatida in montane ecosystems along an altitudinal gradient.</p>

Data from: Altitudinal biodiversity patterns of seed plants along Gongga Mountain in the southeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

The mechanisms underlying elevation patterns in species and phylogenetic diversity remain a central issue in ecology and are vital for effective biodiversity conservation in the mountains. Gongga Mountain, located in the southeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, represents one of the longest elevational gradients (ca. 6500 m, from ca. 1000 - 7556 m) in the world for studying species diversity patterns. However, the elevational gradient and conservation of plant species diversity and phylogenetic diversity in this mountain remain poorly studied. Here, we compiled the elevational distributions of 2,667 native seed plant species occurring in Gongga Mountain, and estimated the species diversity, phylogenetic diversity, species density, and phylogenetic relatedness across ten elevation belts and five vegetation zones. The results indicated that species diversity and phylogenetic diversity of all seed plants showed a hump-shaped pattern, peaking at 1800 - 2200 m. Species diversity was significantly correlated with phylogenetic diversity and species density. The floras in temperate coniferous broad-leaved mixed forests, sub-alpine coniferous forests and alpine shrublands and meadows were significantly phylogenetically clustered, whereas the floras in evergreen broad-leaved forests had phylogenetically random structure. Both climate and human pressure had strong correlation with species diversity, phylogenetic diversity and phylogenetic structure of seed plants. Our results suggest that the evergreen broad-leaved forests and coniferous broad-leaved mixed forests at low to mid elevations deserve more conservation efforts. This study improves our understanding on the elevational gradients of species and phylogenetic diversity and their determinants, and provides support for improving seed plants conservation in Gongga Mountain.
