Data Set for_Integrating torrefaction of pulp industry sludge with anaerobic digestion to produce biomethane and volatile fatty acids: An example of industrial symbiosis for circular bioeconomy

Industrial symbiosis, which allows the sharing of resources between different industries, could help to improve the overall feasibility of bio-based chemicals production. In that regard, this study focused on integrating the torrefaction of pulp industry sludge with anaerobic digestion. More specifically, anaerobic digestion (AD) of pulp sludge-derived torrefaction condensate (TC) was studied to evaluate the biomethane and volatile fatty acid (VFA) potential. The torrefaction condensate produced at 275 and 300 °C was used in AD. The volatile solid content (VS) was 6.69 and 9.01% for the condensate produced at 275 and 300 °C, respectively. The organic fraction of TC mainly contained acetic acid, 2-furanmethanol, and syringol. The methane yield was in the range of 481–772 mL/g VS for the mesophilic and 401–746 mL/g VS for the thermophilic process, respectively. The VFA yield was in the range of 1.1 to 3.4 g/g VS for mesophilic and from 1.5 to 4.7 g/g VS in thermophilic conditions, when methanogenesis was inhibited. Finally, pulp sludge TC is a feasible feedstock to produce platform chemicals like VFA. However, at higher substrate loading, signs of process inhibition were observed because of the relatively increasing concentration of microbial inhibitors

Assessment of whole-site methane emissions from anaerobic digestion plants: towards establishing emission factors for various plant configurations

This dataset supplements the publication "Assessment of whole-site methane emissions from anaerobic digestion plants: towards establishing emission factors for various plant configurations" by Wechselberger et al. (2025).

The dataset contains primary and secondary data underlying the statistical analysis and reported methane emission factors. Emission factors were calculated as described in section 2.3 of the paper.

Available files (UTF-8 encoded):

Data.csv (dataset)

Glossary.csv (column/variable descriptions of dataset)

The dataset includes plant characteristics and whole-site methane losses of 135 anaerobic digestion plants, covering normal and various other-than-normal operating conditions (155 rows). For statistical analysis, only periods during normal operation and plants with information on the analyzed emission factors and plant characteristics were considered (cf. supplementary information C of the paper). Consequently, the final dataset contained 109 anaerobic digestion plants for statistical analysis on the methane emission factor (% of methane produced) and 28 plants when analyzing the wastewater-specific emission factor (kg methane per population equivalent and year). All but one facility continuously processed feedstock without any post-rotting stages. Plant DE-MH_WP5_1 of the secondary data implemented garage digesters.

Data from three plants were collected only after completion of statistical analyses. These data were used to compare methane losses during normal and other-than-normal operating conditions. The respective rows are marked accordingly in the dataset (column “data_collected_after_statistical_analyses”).

Version v2 contains the final reference to the publication Wechselberger et al. (2025). The data are the same as in version v1.

Data_ Integrating torrefaction of pulp industry sludge with anaerobic digestion to produce bioenergy and biochemicals: Techno-economic and environmental feasibility analysis

In order to improve the economic competitiveness of bioenergy carriers and biochemicals, they must be produced
from low-cost or no-cost feedstock and at a reduced operational expenses. In that regard, this study
focused on understanding the techno-economic feasibility of using pulp sludge as a low-cost alternative feedstock
to forestry biomass in torrefaction. Economic feasibility of further integrating pulp sludge torrefaction with
anaerobic digestion to produce energy, biomethane and volatile fatty acids (VFA) was also studied. The operational
expenses were around 8.2 and 2.04 M€ and the minimum selling price of torrefied pellets was 407 and
189 €/t for forestry biomass torrefaction and pulp sludge torrefaction respectively. In case of integrated approaches,
VFA production showed higher economic feasibility with a torrefied pellets selling price of 163 €/t
compared with biomethane production (213 €/t). The biomethane and VFA selling price can be reduced by 90
and 64% compared with current market price at torrefied pellets selling price of 260 €/t. Sensitivity analysis
revealed that, moisture content of the sludge is the main influencing parameter on the overall economic feasibility
of the pulp sludge torrefaction. The environmental analysis showed that pulp sludge torrefaction has higher
emissions compared with forestry biomass torrefaction.

A pilot-scale partial nitritation-anammox process for treatment of anaerobic sludge digester effluent

In most of the wastewater treatment operational practices with anaerobic sludge digestion, the ammonia rich centrate (>100mg/L) is recycled back to the main treatment line which increases the NH4+-N loading to the treatment by as much as 10–30% (Fan 2020). The partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A) process is a biological process that provides an environmentally, economically, and technically sound solution to treat anaerobic sludge digester effluent.

The application of the anammox process in the wastewater system could result in higher nitrogen removal in the digester effluent as there have been related research conducted at lab-scale using synthetic wastewater (Awolusi et al., 2020). However, due to the process sensitivity to operating conditions, there is a need to optimize at pilot scale to emerge as an efficient process, especially in the South African environment as this technology has a possibility to be promoted as an alternative and/or additional bioprocess to be applied in full scale throughout the country.

Anaerobic digestion of poultry manure to power a poultry farm in Ba: Techno-economic study

Poultry is the largest meat volume produced in Fiji, yet considering the large quantity of waste produced by this livestock, there has not been any established study nor application of the anaerobic digestion (AD) of poultry manure (PM) in the country. This paper aims to determine the techno-economic feasibility of the AD of PM to power a poultry farm in Fiji. A pilot-scale, solid-state anaerobic digestion (SSAD) was employed with mono-digestion batches of PM, and co-digestions with kitchen waste (KW) and newspaper waste (NPW). The key operational parameters of AD were measured and its influence on the biogas production were studied, whereby changes in environmental temperature had the greatest effect on biogas production. The results were then used to carry out a feasibility study of the full-scale design. The results showed that the SSAD system would generate 189.46 MWh of electricity annually, with a levelized cost of energy of FJ$0.17/KWh.

Data from: Effect of yeast addition on the biogas production performance of a food waste anaerobic digestion system

Food waste contains numerous easily degradable components, and anaerobic digestion is prone to acidification and instability. This work aimed to investigate the effect of adding yeast on biogas production performance, when substrate is added after biogas production is reduced. The results showed that the daily biogas production increased 520 ml and 550 ml by adding 2.0% (VS) of activated yeast on the 12th and 37th day of anaerobic digestion, respectively, and the gas production was relatively stable. In the control group without yeast, the increase of gas production was significantly reduced. After the second addition of substrate and yeast, biogas production only increased 60 ml compared with that before the addition. After fermentation, the biogas production of yeast group also increased by 33.2% compared with the control group. Results of the analysis of indicators, such as volatile organic acids, alkalinity, and propionic acid, showed that the stability of the anaerobic digestion system of the yeast group was higher. Thus, the yeast group is highly likely to recover normal gas production when the biogas production is reduced, and substrate is added. The results provide a reference for experiments on the industrialisation of continuous anaerobic digestion to take tolerable measures when the organic load of the feed fluctuates dramatically.

Data from: Study of helminth eggs (Ascaris suum) inactivation by anaerobic digestion and electrochemical treatment

The use of insufficiently treated wastewater or fecal sludge in agriculture raises concerns because of the pathogen content. Helminth eggs are one of the most crucial pathogens for ensuring public health and safety. Widely used disinfection treatment methods do not guarantee the complete inactivation of helminth eggs. The current study evaluated the effectiveness of anaerobic digestion and electrochemical process for helminth (Ascaris suum) egg inactivation. Lab-scale biochemical methane potential (BMP) assay was conducted by spiking A. suum eggs in a serum bottle. Total solid (TS), volatile solid (VS), pH, biogas production and its composition, and volatile fatty acids (VFA) were analyzed along with A. suum inactivation, every 3rd day for the initial 15 days and 5th day till 45 days. The results documented 98% inactivation of A. suum eggs (0.15 eggs/ml) in 35 days and remained at 0.14 eggs/ml till the 45th day. Correlation analysis revealed positive relation of non-viable eggs with pH and a negative relationship with all the other parameters. In the second set of experiments, a hypochlorite (4700ppm) solution was generated by electrolysis of aqueous NaCl solution in a membrane-less electrochemical cell. The hypochlorite was diluted (940, 470, 235, and 156ppm) in wastewater, spiked with A. suum eggs and then examined for inactivation at regular intervals. 10% inactivation was achieved at 940ppm concentration in 24h. This study revealed that the inactivation of A. suum eggs by anaerobic digestion or electrochemical treatment is a combined effect of more than one parameter.
