Communicating Animal Research Part 1

Open Science is based on making science more transparent and accessible, but what does that mean for those who do more controversial research? Animal Communicator International Scan of Books, Websites, Animal Communicator Directory
<p>Four datasets are included focusing on animal communicators (AC): practitioners of intuitive interspecies communication (IIC).</p> <p><strong>Dataset #1:</strong> International English language websites data set (n = 400). To be included and coded, websites had to meet the following 3 criteria: (1) have an English language version of the website, (2) currently offer private AC consultations, and (3) be identified before website analysis was determined comprehensive enough to represent the international scope of AC (Oct. 30, 2020). Total books (n = 191): Books were identified through internet searches, including searches on Amazon and used bookstores such as Abe Books, from practicing AC websites, and from the directory: Book Authority Website for “53 Best Animal Communication Books of All Time,” https://bookauthority.org/books/best-animal-communication-books. Dataset includes books’ titles, descriptions, front and back covers and tables of contents where available. Where it was not clear whether the author was an animal communicator who consulted with clients, we did additional online searches to make this determination. All books had an English language printed copy of the book. We excluded books that were available in electronic copy only. We expanded our initial content inclusion criteria used in the website report beyond individuals currently offering consultations as professional animal communicators to include: (1) professional animal communicators who have since retired; (2) individuals who work intensively with animals in other capacities such as healing, but also report instances of IIC; (3) individuals who may not have worked as professional animal communicators, but write about their own lived experience of the phenomena; and (4) books written by individuals who are not ACs but have interviewed ACs. Where a book was written by two authors, or in some cases, an animal communicator with an additional author, we included both authors in our formal citation. To provide a snapshot of growth in numbers of practitioners over time, we compiled listings of ACs published in the Animal Communicator Directory from <em>Species Link: The Journal of Interspecies Telepathic Communication</em>. From 1990-2011, the publication included a directory of practicing ACs; after 2011, the directory went fully online, and data from each year is not available. Compiled to identify and summarize the ways in which ACs were describing essential processes for conducting a successful intuitive communication session with animals, and thus provide an overview of what happens in an IIC session. Selection criteria: We were seeking succinct summaries from ACs. The intent was not to dig into and analyze processes in detail, but rather to summarize and synthesize the essential processes and steps as the ACs were reporting them. As such, it was beyond the scope of this study to analyze reported example communications or analyze processes in books where the entirety of the book was describing communications with animals. Publication date range: 1998-2019. Close to 300 pages were analyzed. The actual "how-to" excerpts are not included as they are subject to copyright. Deep-time convergent evolution in animal communication presented by shared adaptations for coping with noise in lizards and other animals
<p>Convergence in communication appears rare compared to other forms of adaptation. This is puzzling, given communication is acutely dependent on the environment and expected to converge in form when animals communicate in similar habitats. We uncover deep-time convergence in territorial communication between two groups of tropical lizards separated by over 140 million years of evolution: the Southeast Asian Draco and Caribbean Anolis. These groups have repeatedly converged in multiple aspects of display along common environmental gradients. Robot playbacks to free-ranging lizards confirmed the most prominent convergence in display is adaptive, as it improves signal detection. We then provide evidence from a sample of the literature to further show convergent adaptation among highly divergent animal groups is almost certainly widespread in nature. Signal evolution is therefore curbed towards the same set of adaptive solutions, especially when animals are challenged with the problem of communicating effectively in noisy environments.</p>

Directional speakers as a tool for animal vocal communication studies
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Audio playback</span><span>s</span><span> are a common experimental tool in vocal communication research. However, low directionality of sound makes it hard to control the audience exposed to the stimuli. Parametric speakers offer a solution for transmitting directional audible signals by using ultrasonic carrier waves. The targeted transmission of vocal signals offers exciting opportunities for testing the diffusion of information in animal groups and mechanisms for resolving informational ambiguities. We have field tested the quality and directionality of a commercial parametric speaker, Soundlazer SL-01. Additionally, we assessed its usability for performing playback experiments by comparing behavioral responses of free ranging meerkats <em>(Suricata suricatta)</em> to calls transmitted from conventional and parametric speakers. Our results show that the tested parametric speaker is highly directional. However, the acoustic structure of meerkat calls was strongly affected and low frequencies were not reliably reproduced by the parametric speaker. The playback trials elicited weakened behavioral responses likely due to the partial distortion of the signal but also indicating the potential importance of social facilitation for initiating mobbing events in meerkats. We conclude that parametric speakers can be useful tool for directed transmission of animals calls but after a careful assessment of signal fidelity. </span></p>

Adaptations that facilitate the reception of long-range signals under challenging conditions are expected to generate signal diversity when species communicate in different habitats. While we have a general understanding of how individual communicating animals cope with conditions influencing signal detection, the extent to which plasticity and evolutionary changes in signal characteristics contribute to interspecific differences in signaling behavior is unclear. We quantified the visual displays of free-living lizards and environmental variables known to influence display detection for multiple species from two separate island radiations. We found evidence of both adaptive evolution and adaptive plasticity in display characteristics as a function of environmental conditions, but plasticity accounted for most of the observed differences in display behavior across species. At the same time, prominent differences between the two island radiations existed in aspects of signaling behavior, unrelated to the environment. Past evolutionary events have therefore played an important role in shaping the way lizards adjust their signals to challenges in present-day environments. In addition to showing how plasticity contributes to interspecific differences in communication signals, our findings suggest the vagaries of evolution can in itself lead to signal variation between species.
