Phytochemical Screening, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activity of Fabric Coated with Catharanthus Roseus Ethanolic Flowers Extract
<p>The aim of the present study was to evaluate the free radical scavenging and antimicrobial activity of fabric coated of the Catharanthus Roseus. Ethanol flowers extract. Free radical scavenging was determined by using 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), Reducing power, Hydroxyl radical scavenging assay and antimicrobial activity of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and standard drug of Streptomycin using disc diffusion method. This inhibition was observed with the individual extracts and when they were used in lower concentrations with ineffective antibiotics. Dataset from the analysis of biological activity of endophytic strain Serratia quinivorans KP32, the expression of biocontrol-related genes and the activity of antioxidant enzymes in bacterial cells treated with pathogenic fungi filtrates
<p>This dataset contains the data from the analyses published in the article entitled "Genetic Determinants of Antagonistic Interactions and the Response of New Endophytic Strain <i>Serratia quinivorans</i> KP32 to Fungal Phytopathogens" in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences (https://doi.org/10.3390/ijms232415561). The data consist of results collected for studies on the antifungal activity of KP32 strain towards four fungal phytopathogens, results of primer efficiency determination and studies on the expression of genes potentially involved in biocontrol after treatment of KP32 strain with the fungal phytopathogens filtrates. Additionally, absorbances from activity tests for catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the strain treated with fungal pathogens are included.</p>

Baseline glucocorticoids alone do not predict reproductive success across years but in interaction with enzymatic antioxidants
<p>Glucocorticoids are known to adjust organismal functions, such as metabolism, in response to environmental conditions. Therefore, these hormones are thought to play a key role in regulating the metabolically demanding aspects of reproduction, especially in variable environments. However, support for the hypothesis that variation in glucocorticoid concentrations predicts reproductive success is decidedly mixed. Two explanations may account for this discrepancy: a) glucocorticoids might not act independently but could interact with other physiological traits, jointly influencing reproduction, and b) such an association could become apparent primarily in challenging environments when glucocorticoid concentrations increase. To address these two possibilities, we determined natural variation in circulating baseline glucocorticoid concentrations in parental great tits (<em>Parus major</em>) alongside two physiological systems known to be related to an individual's metabolism: oxidative status parameters (i.e., concentrations of pro-oxidants, dietary, and enzymatic antioxidants) and body condition. These systems interact with glucocorticoids and can also influence reproductive success. We measured these variables in two breeding seasons that differed in environmental conditions. When accounting for the interaction of baseline glucocorticoids with other physiological traits, we found a positive relationship between baseline glucocorticoids and the number of fledglings in adult great tits. The strength of this relationship was more pronounced for those individuals who also had high concentrations of the enzymatic antioxidant glutathione peroxidase. When studied independently, glucocorticoids were not related to fitness proxies, even in the year with more challenging environmental conditions. Together, our study lends to support the hypothesis that glucocorticoids do not influence fitness alone, but in association with other physiological systems</p>
Data from: Hypoxia blunts angiogenic signaling and upregulates the antioxidant system in elephant seal endothelial cells
<p><strong><em>Background</em></strong></p> <p>Elephant seals exhibit extreme hypoxemic tolerance derived from repetitive hypoxia/reoxygenation episodes they experience during diving bouts. Real-time assessment of the molecular changes underlying protection against hypoxic injury in seals remains restricted by their at-sea inaccessibility. Hence, we developed a proliferative arterial endothelial cell culture model from elephant seals and used RNA-seq, functional assays, and confocal microscopy to assess the molecular response to prolonged hypoxia.</p> <p><strong><em>Results</em></strong></p> <p>Seal and human endothelial cells exposed to 1% O<sub>2</sub> for up to 6 h respond differently to acute and prolonged hypoxia. Seal cells decouple stabilization of the hypoxia-sensitive transcriptional regulator HIF-1α from angiogenic signaling. Rapid upregulation of genes involved in glutathione (GSH) metabolism supports the maintenance of GSH pools, and intracellular succinate increases in seal but not human cells. High maximal and spare respiratory capacity in seal cells after hypoxia exposure occurs in concert with increasing mitochondrial branch length and independent from major changes in extracellular acidification rate, suggesting that seal cells recover oxidative metabolism without significant glycolytic dependency after hypoxia exposure.</p> <p><strong><em>Conclusions</em></strong></p> <p>We found that the glutathione antioxidant system is upregulated in seal cells during hypoxia, while this system remains static in comparable human cells. Furthermore, we found that in contrast to human cells, hypoxia exposure rapidly activates HIF-1 in seal cells, but this response is decoupled from the canonical HIF-angiogenesis pathway. These results highlight the unique mechanisms that confer extraordinary tolerance to limited oxygen availability in a champion diving mammal.</p>
