The relationship between linguistic expression and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts: A longitudinal study of blog content

To investigate the associations between linguistic features and symptoms of depression, generalised anxiety, and suicidal ideation, we extracted linguistic features from individuals’ blog content and correlated it with validated mental health data in a longitudinal study (n=38). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the self-report Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), anxiety symptoms using the self-report Generalised Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), and social media data was analysed using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) tool for linguistic features. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed to investigate the correlations between the linguistic features and mental health scores between subjects. We then used the multivariate regression model to predict longitudinal changes in mood within subjects.

anxiety and depression

Patient-reported outcomes via electronic health record portal vs. telephone: process and retention data in a pilot trial of anxiety or depression symptoms in epilepsy

Objective: To close gaps between research and clinical practice, tools are needed for efficient pragmatic trial recruitment and patient-reported outcome(PROM) collection. The objective was to assess feasibility and process measures for patient-reported outcome collection in a randomized trial comparing electronic health record(EHR) patient portal questionnaires to telephone interview among adults with epilepsy and anxiety or depression symptoms.

Results: Participants were 60% women, 77% White/non-Hispanic, with mean age 42.5 years. Among 15 individuals randomized to EHR portal, 10(67%, CI 41.7-84.8%) met the 6-month retention endpoint, versus 100%(CI 79.6-100%) in the telephone group(p=0.04). EHR outcome collection at 6 months required 11.8 minutes less research staff time per participant than telephone (5.9, CI 3.3-7.7 vs. 17.7, CI 14.1-20.2). Subsequent telephone contact after unsuccessful EHR attempts enabled near complete data collection and still saved staff time.

Discussion: Data from this randomized pilot study of pragmatic outcome collection methods for patients with anxiety or depression symptoms in epilepsy includes baseline participant characteristics, recruitment flow resulting from a novel EHR-based, care-embedded recruitment process, and data on retention along with various process measures at 6-months.

Internet-based interdisciplinary therapeutic group for perinatal anxiety and depression - a randomized pilot study during COVID-19

Abstract:

Background: Recent years have seen growing interest in the impact that stress and depressive/anxiety symptomatology have on mothers, fetal development, the mother-baby relationship and infant development. Depressed mothers spend less time making eye-contact with their babies, and caressing and talking to them, which can cause delays in cognitive and emotional development. Early interventions promote reductions in mothers’ stress and anxiety symptoms along with improvements in their ability to read infant cues appropriately. Group perinatal care and internet-based therapeutic interventions were essential during the Covid period and telemedicine ensures continuity of contact with high-risk populations. The aim of this novel study was to assess the effects of interdisciplinary online therapeutic group in at-risk mothers and babies during the Covid-19 pandemic in a disadvantaged neighborhood in Barcelona (Spain).

Method: An interdisciplinary team offered gestating women and mothers comprehensive care in a protective environment in a Primary Health Care Center. Pregnant women and new mothers were screened to detect depressive-anxiety symptomatology through EPDS/STAI questionnaires. A total of 135 babies were born from March 2020 to June 2021, during the pandemic, and 72 women met high-risk criteria for anxiety or depression. Some 37 pregnant women and mother-baby dyads were treated in the therapeutic group and compared with 27 women randomly selected from the control group, who received treatment as usual. A blinded pediatric follow-up was established when the babies were 6 months old to monitor their development through the Llevant Scale. The course of the mothers’ symptomatology was also assessed.

Results: We obtained a significant decrease in depressive-anxiety symptomatology (EPDS p=0.000; STAI state p=0.015 and STAI trait p=0.001 at 6 months of life) in the therapeutic group compared with controls. Follow-up at 6 months demonstrated significant differences between groups in assessment of the babies’ development (manipulation p=0.003; language p=0.000; sociability p=0.000). The therapeutic group showed no difficulties in any areas of development.

Conclusions: Interdisciplinary online therapeutic group helps to ensure healthy development of the baby and reduction of the mothers’ depressive-anxiety symptomatology. Future research should involve larger samples to explore the impact of online group interventions in both mothers and babies.

Trial registration: The study is registered at Jordi Gol i Gurina Foundation number 21/276-P.

A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of Distance Laughter Therapy for Mothers' Level of Depression, Anxiety, and Parental Stress during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Presented here are both quantitative and qualitative datasets from a study titled 'A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of Distance Laughter Therapy for Mothers’ Level of Depression, Anxiety, and Parental Stress during the COVID-19 Pandemic.' The COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated significant lifestyle modifications globally, leading to heightened psychological stressors, notably depression and anxiety. Concurrently, the exigencies of parental care have escalated, thereby amplifying the risk of caregiver exhaustion and potential child maltreatment. This study sought to assess the efficacy and feasibility of utilizing distance laughter therapy for mothers who are looking after young children during these challenging times. The primary objective was to alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and parental stress.
