A list of newly (re)appearing alien species in Belgium in support of decision making

<h2><strong>Context</strong></h2> <p>Invasive alien species are an important driver of biodiversity loss. Policy responses are developed to address this threat and need to be based on the best available data, including information from alien species registries and occurrence data. The Tracking Invasive Alien Species (<a href="http://trias-project.be" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TrIAS</a>) project implemented a workflow based on FAIR principles to identify new species in Belgium. These are species that have been newly observed on the territory or that were newly added to a species registry or checklist. The workflow is built on the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and uses the Belgian Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species (<a href="https://doi.org/10.15468/xoidmd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GRIIS Belgium</a>) as a baseline for comparison.&nbsp;</p> <h2><strong>Description</strong></h2> <p>This dataset contains the outputs of the <a href="https://trias-project.github.io/indicators/06_occurrence_indicators_appearing_taxa.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pipeline</a> that generates a list of new alien species occurring in Belgium. This pipeline retrieves alien taxa from openly published species checklists or occurrence datasets on GBIF and compares this list with the <a href="https://doi.org/10.15468/xoidmd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species - Belgium</a> (GRIIS Belgium) which is published by the IUCN Invasive Species Specialist Group (ISSG). This register is based on the <a href="https://github.com/trias-project/unified-checklist" target="_blank" rel="noopener">unified checklist of alien species in Belgium</a> which was created by TrIAS in support of research and policy using an open and reproducible workflow. Appearing/reappearing species are defined as follows:</p> <ul> <li>Appearing: an alien species which newly occurs on the Belgian territory in the three years before the year of the GBIF download used for creating the <a href="../records/10527772" target="_blank" rel="noopener">occurrence cube for non-native taxa in Belgium</a>. We will refer to this 3 years period as <em>evaluation period</em>.</li> <li>Re-appearing: an alien species reappearing on the Belgian territory after a latency of 4 years or more. Dataset of first appearances of the scholarly bibliographic references on English Wikipedia articles as of 1 March 2017 and as of 1 October 2021

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>We developed a methodology to detect the oldest scholarly reference added to Wikipedia articles by which a certain paper is uniquely identifiable as the &quot;first appearance of the scholarly reference.&quot; We identified the first appearances of 923,894 scholarly references (611,119 unique DOIs) in180,795 unique pages on English Wikipedia as of March 1, 2017, and stored them in the dataset. Moreover, we assessed the precision of the dataset, which was and it was a high precision regardless of the research field. In this version,&nbsp;it is available not only the dataset of English Wikipedia as of March 1, 2017, but also English Wikipedia as of October 1, 2021, generated by using&nbsp;the same methodology.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Data Records</strong></p> <p>The data format of the dataset is JSON lines, where each line is a single record. In this dataset, we detected the first appearance of each scholarly reference added to Wikipedia articles. If there are multiple references corresponding to the same paper on the same page, only the oldest one is collected. Exceptional variation in the appearance of Common Murre eggs reveals their potential as identity signals

<p>We studied the ground colors and maculations of 161 Common Murre (Uria aalge) eggs laid by 43 females in 3 small breeding groups on the cliffs of Skomer Island, Wales, in 2016–2018. Both the colors and maculations varied much more among than within females, providing quantitative evidence for the egg traits that might facilitate the parents' ability to identify their own eggs on the crowded breeding ledges where the density is typically ~20 eggs m–2. Ground colors had a trimodal distribution of hue values (whitish to pale brown, pale blue, or vivid blue-green) and maculations ranged from none to complex squiggles and blotches. The eggs laid by each female in different years were similar to one another, and replacement eggs laid by females within years were also more similar to their first egg than to other eggs in the same breeding group. Egg appearance did not differ among the 3 breeding groups that we studied. Our findings thus support anecdotal observations that, within and between years, female Common Murres lay eggs that have similar ground colors and maculations. We do not, however, find evidence that there is much difference among the eggs laid in different parts of a colony.</p>

Raw Datasets of: "Evaluating the Cost-Effectiveness of Plastic Surgery Based on the Satisfaction with Quality of Life and Nasolabial Appearance in Thai Preteens with Cleft Lip and Palate"

<p>A cross-sectional study with 30 Thai preteen CLP patients aged between 8 to 12-year-old was undertaken between 2017 and 2019 at Tawanchai center. Their satisfaction with QoL was reflected through an interview and a questionnaire with the cooperation of their parents as their caregivers while satisfaction with their nasolabial appearance was from the evaluation of five experts who compared their photos with those of normal faces to determine correlation values of the nasolabial appearance from 5-rating scales using Fleiss&rsquo;s kappa coefficient scores.</p>

The Huanan Market Origin of SARS-CoV-2 is unlikely: The ancestral lineage containing specimen appears to have arisen from laboratory contamination

<p>&bull;&nbsp;There is universal agreement that the lineage B/L is not the ancestral SARS-CoV-2; lineage A/S is the most ancestral lineage<br> &bull;&nbsp;Until the Gao paper, no lineage A/S virus was identified at the Huanan Market, making the market an unlikely origin for the pandemic<br> &bull;&nbsp;The Gao paper found one specimen, A20, with both lineage A/S and B/L<br> &bull;&nbsp;The lineage B/L reads in A20 and the specimen Ct matched the expected findings<br> &bull;&nbsp;The lineage A/S reads were anomalously high compared to the Ct and meet the definition of a statistical outlier<br> &bull;&nbsp;The SARS-CoV-2 reads from the A20 sample also had two SNVs not seen in GISAID sequences until at least 60-90 days after the specimen was collected from the market<br> &bull;&nbsp;This analysis supports a finding that the ancestral lineage A/S virus sequences in sample A20 were not present on the glove on January 1, 2020 when the sample was collected but instead arose by inadvertent laboratory contamination later, probably during metagenomic sequencing</p> <p>The absence of an unimpeachable ancestral lineage specimen at the Hunan Market makes it unlikely the market was the origin of the pandemic.</p>
