A Terrylene Bisimide based Universal Host for Aromatic Guests to Derive Contact Surface-Dependent Dispersion Energies

<p>Additional data to report <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/anie.202318451">https://doi.org/10.1002/anie.202318451</a>:<br><br>&pi;&ndash;&pi; interactions are among the most important intermolecular interactions in supramolecular systems. Here we determine experimentally a universal parameter for their strength that is simply based on the size of the interacting contact surfaces. Toward this goal we designed a new cyclophane based on terrylene bisimide (TBI) &pi;-walls connected by&nbsp;<em>para</em>-xylylene spacer units. With its extended &pi;-surface this cyclophane proved to be an excellent and universal host for the complexation of &pi;-conjugated guests, including small and large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as well as dye molecules. The observed binding constants range up to 108 M&minus;1&nbsp;and show a linear dependence on the 2D area size of the guest molecules. This correlation can be used for the prediction of binding constants and for the design of new host&ndash;guest systems based on the herewith derived universal Gibbs interaction energy parameter of 0.31 kJ/mol&Aring;2 in chloroform.</p>

Room-Temperature Phosphorescence of Cocrystals of Aromatic Bisimides and Triplet Sensitizer Pt(acac)2

<p>Additional data to report <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/adfm.202412843">https://doi.org/10.1002/adfm.202412843</a>:</p> <p>Four sterically shielded aromatic bisimides are synthesized and their ability to form cocrystals with the triplet sensitizer platinum(II) acetylacetonate (Pt(acac)2) is investigated. Single crystals of the individual electron-deficient bisimides are studied first, two showing bright blue fluorescence with quantum yields up to 28%, while the other two barely emit at all. After successful cocrystallization of all four aromatic bisimides with the electron-rich Pt(II) complex, two different stoichiometries, either 1:1 or 1:2, are found in the crystalline solid state, whose absorbance and photoluminescence exhibit distinct bathochromic shifts. While two naphthalene bisimides show strong and long-lived room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with quantum yield up to over 50%, the other two aromatic bisimides show only minor photoluminescence at RT, but a bright low-temperature phosphorescence (LTP) at 80 K. Theoretical calculations reveal the importance of changing the magnetic quantum number <em>m</em> of the involved <em>d</em>-orbitals at the platinum center as well as the alignment of the Pt(II) center above an aromatic C-C bond for an efficient intersystem crossing in these systems.</p>

Donor-acceptor complex formation by social self-sorting of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and perylene bisimides

<p>Additional data to report&nbsp;<a href="https://doi.org/10.1039/D3CC03704E">https://doi.org/10.1039/D3CC03704E</a></p> <p>Self-assembly versus complexation with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) guest molecules is studied for a series of perylene bisimides (PBIs). Bulky imide substituents at the PBI guide their self-assembly into dimer aggregates with null-type exciton coupling. Host-guest titration experiments with perylene and triphenylene PAHs afford 1:1 and 1:2 complexes whose properties are studied by single crystal X-ray analysis and UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy.</p>
