Red vision in animals is broadly associated with lighting environment but not types of visual task

<p>Red sensitivity is the exception rather than the norm in most animal groups. Among species with a long wavelength sensitive (LWS) photoreceptor, peak wavelength sensitivity (λ<sub>max</sub>) varies substantially and it is unclear whether this variation can be explained by visual tuning to the light environment or to visual tasks such as signalling or foraging. Here, we examine long wavelength sensitivity across a broad range of taxa showing diversity in LWS photoreceptor λ<sub>max</sub>: insects, crustaceans, arachnids, amphibians, reptiles, fish, sharks and rays. We identified 161 species with a LWS photoreceptor (λ<sub>max</sub> ≥ 550 nm). We found evidence supporting visual tuning to the light environment: terrestrial species had longer λ<sub>max</sub> than aquatic species, and of these, species from turbid shallow waters had longer λmax than those from clear or deep waters. Of the terrestrial species, diurnal species had longer λ<sub>max</sub> than nocturnal species, but we did not detect any differences across terrestrial habitats (closed, intermediate or open). We found no association with proxies for visual tasks such as having red morphological features or utilising flowers or coral reefs. These results support the emerging consensus that, in general, visual systems are adapted to broad range of tasks, rather than tuned to certain tasks.</p>

Diaspore traits specialized to animal adhesion and sea current dispersal are positively associated with the naturalization of European plants across the World

<p>Understanding what drives non-native species naturalization (the establishment of a self-sustainable population outside its native range) is a central question in invasion science. Plants' capacity for long distance dispersal (LDD) is likely to influence the spread and naturalization of non-native species differently according to their introduction pathways. These pathways include intentional introductions (for economic use, e.g. for agriculture), unintentional introductions (e.g. seed contaminants), plant dispersal via human infrastructures (e.g. roads), and plant spread from an adjacent region where the species was previously introduced. Herein, we tested the relationship between sets of LDD traits (syndromes) of 10,308 European plant species and their global naturalization incidence (i.e. whether a species has become naturalized or not) and extent (i.e. the number of regions where a species has become naturalized) using the most comprehensive database of naturalized plants worldwide (GloNAF). Diaspore traits allowed the identification of four traditional LDD syndromes, namely those with specializations for dispersal by: wind (anemochorous), animal ingestion (endozoochorous), attached to animals (epizoochorous), and sea currents (thalassochorous). These evolutionary specializations have been historically interpreted by biologists even though actual dispersal is not always related to diaspore syndromes. We found that while epizoochorous and thalassochorous traits are positively associated with global plant naturalization incidence, anemochorous and endozoochorous traits show a negative relationship. Species´ residence time outside their native range, their economic use and presence of epizoochorous traits (such as hooks, hairs and adhesive substances) are positively associated with global naturalization extent. Furthermore, we found that plants' economic use reduces the influence of LDD syndromes on the naturalization incidence of intentionally introduced plants. While the success of non-native plants is influenced by a broad array of species- and context-specific factors, LDD syndromes play an important role in this context depending on the economic use of plants.</p>

Modelling migraine-related features in the nitroglycerin animal model: trigeminal hyperalgesia is associated with affective status and motor behaviour

<p>This dataset comprises the findings obtained in the study aimed at exploring the correlation between trigeminal hyperalgesia and affective status or behavioral components in a migraine-specific animal model based on nitroglycerin administration (see article&nbsp;<em>Modelling migraine-related features in the nitroglycerin animal model: trigeminal hyperalgesia is associated with affective status and motor behaviour).</em></p> <p>In vivo assessments performed in male Sprague-Dawley rats four hours after treatment with nitroglycerin (10mg/kg, i.p.) or its vehicle:</p> <p>- in the open field test were evaluated: time spent (expressed in seconds) in the center of the apparatus as a measure of anxiety; distance (expressed in meters) travelled in the apparatus as a measure of motor behaviour; number of rearings as a measure of exploratory behaviour; time spent in grooming behavior (expressed in seconds) used as nociception index;</p> <p>- evaluation of trigeminal hyperalgesia in the orofacial formalin test: the face rubbing was measured counting the seconds the animal spent grooming the injected area (upper lip, lateral to the nose) with the ipsilateral forepaw or hindpaw 0&ndash;3 min (Phase I) or 12&ndash;45 min (Phase II) after formalin injection (50 &micro;l, s.c.). The observation time was divided into 15 blocks of 3 min each.</p> <p><strong>RESULTS</strong></p> <p>The data analysis shows an inverse correlation between trigeminal hyperalgesia and motor or exploratory behavior, and a positive association with anxiety-like behavior of spontaneous grooming.</p> <p>These findings further expand on the translational value of the migraine-specific model based on nitroglycerin administration and prompt additional parameters that can be investigated to explore the complexity of the disease.</p>

Animal data associated with: Pattern dynamics and stochasticity of the brain rhythms

<p>Our current understanding of brain rhythms is based on quantifying their instantaneous or time-averaged characteristics. What remains unexplored, is the actual structure of the waves–their shapes and patterns over finite timescales. The data published here are used to study brain wave patterning in different physiological contexts using two independent approaches: the first is based on quantifying stochasticity relative to the underlying mean behavior, and the second assesses "orderliness'' of the waves' features. The corresponding measures capture the waves' characteristics and abnormal behaviors, such as atypical periodicity or excessive clustering, and demonstrate coupling between the patterns' dynamics and the animal's location, speed, and acceleration. Specifically, patterns of θ, γ, and ripple waves recorded in mice hippocampi and observed speed-modulated changes of the wave's cadence, an antiphase relationship between orderliness and acceleration, as well as spatial selectiveness of patterns, are derived from the data. The results offer a complementary–mesoscale–perspective on brain wave structure, dynamics, and functionality.</p>
