Native tree growth and reproduction in response to reduction in the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) canopy at Palmyra Atoll
These data describe competition for light (open solar path) between introduced coconut palm trees (Cocos nucifera) and native tree species between 2004 and 2008 at Palmyra Atoll, Northern Line Islands, Pacific Ocean. Data are contained in one table, including values from the start, end, and intermediate samples. The dataset measures the change in tree growth (DBH and height) and reproductive potential (flower and fruit production) in relation to time and open solar path value. Two treatments are considered: OSP values less than 50% created by C. nucifera removal, and OSP values greater than 50%.
Palmyra Atoll soil and/or wood density sampling locations used in the carbon storage analysis
This dataset provided soil and/or wood density sampling locations and values from Palmyra Atoll (2016 and 2019). Soil samples were extracted to measure organic carbon content associated with different vegetation communities in Palmyra. Wood samples were collected to measure basic wood density values for dominant woody vegetation types found in Palmyra to calculate aboveground carbon values.
Palmyra Atoll dissolved organic carbon sampling locations and values
This package provides data for Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) sampling locations and values. DOC was sampled at 12 sites to compare DOC export in native and non-native canopies Palmyra Atoll in 2019. Two samples were taken 50 m apart at each site. Three comparison samples were taken from surface waters offshore of the atoll, on the forereef, and from lagoon away from shore. Samples were processed and sent to a lab for analysis.

Activity budgets and space use for two common Pacific parrotfish (Chlorurus Sp.) at Palmyra Atoll National Wildlife Refuge
Data was collected at Palmyra Atoll National Wildlife Refuge located in the Central Pacific in 2014, and the work focuses on two species of Parrotfish, Chlorurus microrhinos and Chlorurus spilurus (formerly Cholrurus sordidus). For C. microrhinos, the project was designed to collect fine-scale spatial behavior data, focusing on territory size, species interactions, and benthic impact (i.e. feeding behavior). Focal follow data was collected by one or two observer(s), either on snorkel or SCUBA, and recording focal activity down to the second. Simultaneously, the observer would be towing a GPS that was recording a location every 5 seconds and each location was then associated with a particular behavior. Throughout this study individual fish were identifiable and successive follows were possible on individuals. For C. spilurus the focus of the project was to collect behavioral time budget data on feeding, territorial defense, and spawning behavior. The ‘Chlorurus_Area_Palmyra_2014.csv’ data only covers C. Microrhinos and gives the 95% KUD area estimation for GPS towed tracks, as well as the 95% KUD area for locations where feeding was occurring. We also report the step length between successive points for the entire follow as well as where feeding was occurring. The ‘Chlorurus_Activity_Palmyra_2014.csv’ is for both C. Microrhinos and C. spilurus and reports the start and stop time of each focal follow as well as the start and stop time of each activity. Activity descriptions can be found in the metadata and the total length and phase for each individual in our study can be found in ‘Fish_Information_Chlorurus_Data_2014.csv.

Mangroves in the lagoon of the protected Aldabra Atoll: a dataset on species, structure, biomass and the environment
<p>Mangroves are vital for climate change mitigation since they store vast quantities of carbon as biomass and in the soil. Global mangrove biomass estimates are derived from climate-based relationships of mangroves with precipitation and temperature. However, the carbon stored locally is highly variable depending on environmental conditions. This uncertainty highlights the importance of local mangrove surveys and the need to explore factors that regulate forest structure and, therefore, carbon storage. In this study, we investigate the mangrove forest structure, seedling growth, species composition, aboveground biomass, soil organic carbon, and local environmental factors related to variation in mangrove carbon in the lagoonal mangroves on the protected Aldabra Atoll, Seychelles. We present a database from an extensive field survey of Aldabra's mangrove ecosystem using 54 plots of 5 m x 5 m along a mangrove coverage gradient. From November 2019 to November 2020, we measured the structural attributes and identified six mangrove species from >750 adult mangrove trees on Aldabra. We used the height and diameter of adult trees to derive aboveground biomass and carbon from a tropical allometric equation. We measured the height of 59 mangrove seedlings over three sampling periods. In addition, environmental factors were recorded for each plot. We measured soil salinity repeatedly along the soil column. From 90 soil samples, we measured the physical and chemical properties of the soil, including soil organic carbon and elemental concentrations for >20 elements. Autonomous measures of the water level, temperature and conductivity were made every 10 minutes over 1 year in a subset of 36 plots. The database provides 60% more information that is currently available for Seychelles regarding mangrove forest structure and biomass and is essential for research on several globally threatened and endemic species that depend on the mangroves on Aldabra. Furthermore, the database allows the incorporation of data and insights for the Western Indian Ocean and lagoonal mangroves, where few studies have been conducted on mangrove aboveground biomass and soil organic carbon. Spatial and Social Behavior of Acanthurus triostegus on Moorea (French Polynesia) and Palmyra Atoll (USA), 2017-2018
These data describe the schooling behavior of coral reef fish on Moorea (French Polynesia) and Palmyra Atoll (USA) in 2017 and 2018. Data are grouped into two sets of observations: 1) surveys measuring the abundance of reef fish and the proportion of those fish occurring in schools, and 2) behavioral observations including time spent grazing and GPS tracks of schooling and solitary Acanthurus triostegus.
PALATABILITY OF TWO RODENTICIDE PRODUCTS: FIELD-BASED ASSESSMENT AT PALMYRA ATOLL
This dataset describes the palatability, for the land crab Cardisoma carnifex, of two rodenticide bait products available for conservation use in the U.S.: “25W” containing 25 ppm brodifacoum as the active ingredient, and “D50” containing 50 ppm diphacinone as the active ingredient. Both rodenticide bait products were found to be palatable to rats and crabs when presented alongside three commonly available food items: coconut endosperm (meat), the meristematic tissue of young coconut palms, and the fleshy mesocarp of Pandanus fruit.
Bioerosion on Fungia pieces and coral recruits, calcification and settlement data on Palmyra Atoll reef.
Coral recruitment and calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) accretion are fundamental processes that help maintain coral reefs. Many reefs worldwide have experienced degradation, including a decrease in coral cover and biodiversity. Successful coral recruitment helps degraded reefs to recover, while CaCO₃ accretion by early successional benthic organisms maintains the topographic complexity of a coral reef system. It is therefore important to understand the processes that affect coral recruitment and CaCO₃ accretion rates in order to understand how coral reefs recover from disturbances. The aim of this thesis was to determine how biophysical forcing factors affect coral recruitment, calcification and bioerosion on a pristine coral reef.
Invasive rat eradication effects on seedling counts on Palmyra Atoll, 2004-2016
In order to investigate the impacts of rat eradication on plant communities on the Palmyra Atoll, Line Islands, Central Pacific Ocean ecosystem, a study was conducted surveying the native and non-native tree and palm seedling abundance before and after an eradication event which took place in June 2011. The common plant species examined were P. grandis and C. nucifera, while the less-common species were B. asiatica, C. subcordata, H. sonora, G. speciosa, N. oppositifolium, and C. inophyllum. Data for common plant species were collected in 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2016, and for less-common species in 2004, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2016. Data were collected via survey methods; 55 transect sites were examined for the common species, and between 49 to 55 sites were examined depending on the year, for the less-common species.
