Evaluating the precariousness of coral recovery when coral and macroalgae are alternative basins of attraction
When coral and macroalgae are alternative attractors, the trajectory of the benthic community following a major disturbance is shaped in part by whether herbivores keep macroalgae suppressed, leaving reef surfaces in a state suitable for coral colonization. Because macroalgae tend to colonize much faster than coral, an important issue is how close ambient herbivory is to the level where control of macroalgae is lost, that is, the precariousness of the coral-invasible state relative to the switch-point to macroalgae. In Moorea, French Polynesia, reefs dominated by the macroalga Turbinaria ornata remained so for multiple population turnovers, whereas reefs where Turbinaria was removed by a simulated pulse disturbance remained free of macroalgae throughout the 5-yr study. A field experiment revealed that macroalgae was unable to proliferate on disturbed reefs until ambient herbivory was reduced by more than 50%. Low precariousness of the coral-invasible state facilitated a gradual transition to a coral community because it allowed sufficient time for coral to repopulate. Accumulation of coral on disturbed reefs was 3.5 times greater than on undisturbed, Turbinaria-dominated reefs. Long-term persistence of the coral-invasible state was facilitated by high abundances of grazing herbivores that prevent the establishment of macroalgae, whereas persistence of the Turbinaria-dominated state reflected the scarcity of browsing herbivores that consume mature macroalgae. By revealing processes that foster bistability of coral and macroalgae states, our work helps explain the rich dynamical behavior exhibited by coral reef communities in Moorea and elsewhere. Root symbionts alter the volatile profile of herbivore-infested tomato plants and aid the attraction of a predator
<p>Beneficial root microbes are among the most frequently used biocontrol agents in cropping systems, since they have been shown to promote plant growth and crop yield. Moreover, they are able to enhance protection against pathogens and insect herbivores by activating plant resistance mechanisms. Plant defense responses against herbivorous insects include the induction of metabolic pathways involved in the synthesis of defense-related metabolites. These metabolites include volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which attract natural enemies of the herbivores as a form of indirect resistance. Considering that beneficial root microbes may affect direct herbivore resistance, we hypothesized that also indirect resistance may be affected. We tested this hypothesis in a study system composed of tomato, the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus <em>Rhizophagus irregularis</em>, the growth-promoting fungus <em>Trichoderma harzianum</em>, the generalist chewing herbivore <em>Spodoptera exigua </em>and the omnivorous predator<em> Macrolophus pygmaeus</em>. Using a Y-tube olfactometer we found that <em>M. pygmaeus</em> preferred plants with <em>S. exigua </em>herbivory, but microbe-inoculated plants more than non-inoculated ones. We used a targeted GC-MS approach to assess the impact of beneficial microbes on the emission of volatiles twenty-four hours after herbivory to explain the choice of <em>M. pygmaeus</em>. We observed that the volatile composition of the herbivore-infested plants differed from that of the non-infested plants, which was driven by the higher emission of green leaf volatile compounds, methyl salicylate, and several monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. Inoculation with microbes had only a marginal effect on the emission of some terpenoids in our experiment. Gene expression analysis showed that the marker genes involved in the jasmonic and salicylic acid pathways were differentially expressed in the microbe-inoculated plants after herbivory. Our results pinpoint the role of root symbionts in determining plant-microbe-insect interactions up to the third trophic level, and elucidates their potential to be used in plant protection.</p>

Historical GIS and Guidebooks: Czechoslovak Tourist Attractions
<p>The following dataset of geolocated travel guide toponyms was compiled in the process of a research project <em>Historical GIS and Guidebooks: A Scalable Reading of Czechoslovak Tourist Attractions </em>(Bechmann Pedersen & Johansson, forthcoming) in which we performed a scalable reading of three travel guides of the former Czechoslovak lands as they were cirka 1959. Perceived safety and attractiveness of city streets in Frankfurt, Germany: ratings and explanations
<p>How safe or attractive do different people perceive streets to be and why?</p> <p>In this repository we share the data we collected and analysed for the paper "Is it safe to be attractive? Disentangling the influence of streetscape features on the perceived safety and attractiveness of city streets".</p> <p>The data contain ratings of perceived safety and attractiveness (using a 5-point Likert scale) coming from 403 participants who were asked to virtually navigate city streets in Frankfurt, Germany, through a sequence of street-level images. Moreover it contains their explanations of the ratings (in their own words).</p> <p>In total we have collected data for 753 locations. Data from: Effects of past mating behavior versus past ejaculation on male mate choice and male attractiveness
<p>Past reproductive effort allows males to assess their ability to acquire mates, but it also consumes resources that can reduce their future competitive ability. Few studies have examined how a male's reproductive history affects his subsequent mate choice; and, to date, no study has determined the relative contribution of past mating behavior and past ejaculate production because these two forms of investment are naturally highly correlated. Here, we disentangled the relative effects of past mating behavior and past ejaculate production in male mosquitofish (<em>Gambusia holbrooki</em>) by experimentally preventing some males from ejaculating when trying to mate. We assessed the effect of mating behavior on mate choice by comparing males that had previously been with or without access to females and male rivals for 16 weeks; and assessed the effect of ejaculation on mate choice by comparing males that either could or could not ejaculate when they had access to females for 16 weeks. We compared (1) time females spent with each male, (2) total distance males swam, (3) total time males spent inspecting females, (4) proportion of time males spent with the solitary females in separate models, with age (week 8, week 16) and treatment of reproductive history ("naive male", "mating only male" and "mating and ejaculation males") as fixed factors. </p> <p>We showed that reproductive history did not affect male attractiveness, but it did affect male mate choice. Somewhat surprisingly, in two-choice trials males from all three treatments preferred females in the vicinity of a rival over solitary females. This preference was marginally stronger for males engaging in previous mating behavior but was unaffected by past ejaculate production. This is the first study to quantify the relative influence of pre- and post-copulatory reproductive investment on male mate choice.</p>

Data: Measuring plant attractiveness to pollinators: methods and considerations
<p>Global pollinator declines have fostered increased public interest in creating pollinator-friendly gardens in human-managed landscapes. Indeed, studies on urban pollinator communities suggest that flower-rich greenspaces can serve as promising sites for conservation. Ornamental flowers, which are readily available at most commercial garden centers, are ubiquitous in these landscapes. These varieties are often non-native and highly bred, and their utility to pollinators is complex. In this study, we used observational data and citizen science to develop a methods framework that will assist stakeholders in the floriculture industry to incorporate metrics of pollinator health into existing breeding and evaluation protocols. The results of this study support how plant attractiveness to pollinators is often dependent on variables such as climate and plant phenology, which should be considered when developing an assessment tool. Furthermore, we found that some cultivars were consistently attractive across all observations while for other cultivars, pollinator visitation was apparently conditional. We determine using multiple statistical tests that 10 min is a sufficient length of time for observation of most plant types to broadly estimate three measures of plant attractiveness: visitor abundance, primary visitors attracted, and cultivar rank attractiveness, without sacrificing efficiency or accuracy. Additionally, we demonstrate that properly trained non-expert observers can collect accurate observational data, and our results suggest that protocols may be designed to maximize consistency across diverse data collectors. </p>
Transcriptomic analysis of deceptively pollinated Arum maculatum (Araceae) reveals association between terpene synthase expression in floral trap chamber and species-specific pollinator attraction
<p>A compressed folder containing the R script and input files required to replicate the results in our manuscript entitled "Transcriptomic analysis of deceptively pollinated <em>Arum maculatum</em> (Araceae) reveals association between terpene synthase expression in floral trap chamber and species-specific pollinator attraction".</p> <p>Note: Raw Illumina sequencing files associated with this study have been uploaded to NCBI SRA, under the BioProject accession PRJNA856436.</p> <p><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p> <p>Deceptive pollination often involves volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions that mislead insects into performing non-rewarding pollination. Among deceptively pollinated plants, <em>Arum maculatum</em> is particularly well-known for its potent dung-like VOC emissions and specialized floral chamber, which traps pollinators – mainly <em>Psychoda phalaenoides</em>and <em>P. grisescens</em> – overnight. However, little is known about the genes underlying the production of many <em>A. maculatum</em>VOCs, and their influence on variation in pollinator attraction rates. Therefore, we performed <em>de novo</em> transcriptome sequencing of <em>A. maculatum</em> appendix and male floret tissue collected during- and post-anthesis, from ten natural populations across Europe. These RNA-seq data were paired with GC-MS analyses of floral scent composition and pollinator data collected from the same inflorescences. Differential expression analyses revealed candidate transcripts in appendix tissue linked to malodourous VOCs including indole, <em>p</em>-cresol, and 2-heptanone. Additionally, we found that terpene synthase expression in male floret tissue during anthesis significantly covaried with sex- and species-specific attraction of <em>Psychoda phalaenoides</em> and <em>P.</em> <em>grisescens</em>. Taken together, our results provide the first insights into molecular mechanisms underlying pollinator attraction patterns in <em>A. maculatum</em>, and highlight floral chamber sesquiterpene (<em>e.g.</em>bicyclogermacrene) synthases as interesting candidate genes for further study.</p>
