Data coverage, biases, and trends in a global citizen-science resource for monitoring avian diversity

<p><strong>Aim:</strong> Understanding and addressing the global biodiversity crisis requires ecological information compiled continuously from across the globe. Data from citizen science initiatives are useful for quantifying species' ecological niches and geographical distributions but can be difficult to apply towards biodiversity monitoring. The presence of fixed geographical locations reduces the opportunistic nature of citizen science data, allowing for more reliable and nuanced trend estimation. The eBird citizen-science programs contains predefined locations whose bird assemblages are sampled across years ('hotspots'). For hotspots to function as a biodiversity monitoring resource, issues related to data coverage, biases, and trends need to be addressed.</p> <p><strong>Location:</strong> Global.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> We estimated the survey completeness of species richness at 300,500 eBird hotspots during the years 2002 to 2022. We documented sampling biases at eBird hotspot and non-hotspot locations during 2022 based on protection status, temperature, precipitation, and landcover.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> A total of 10,410 bird species (<em>ca</em>. 96.9% of total) were recorded at hotspots. The number hotspots and the quantity of data and unique participants and quality of species richness estimates has increased worldwide with the Nearctic containing the strongest and most consistent trends. Compared to non-hotspots, hotspots over sampled areas with higher protection status. Hotspots and non-hotspots over sampled warmer and wetter locations in the Antarctic, Nearctic, and Palearctic, and cooler locations in the Afrotropics, Australasia, and the Neotropics. Hotspots and especially non-hotspots over sampled urban areas. Hotspots and non-hotspots under sampled shrublands in Australasia. Hotspots and especially non-hotspots under sampled forests in the Afrotropics, Indomalaya, Neotropics, and Oceania.</p> <p><strong>Main conclusions:</strong> Hotspots have captured a large component of the world's avian diversity but have done so inconsistently across space and time. Data quantity and quality are increasing in many regions, but the presence of sampling biases and spatial uncertainty needs to be addressed when applying the data.</p>

Spatial and temporal resource partitioning in a mixed-species colony of avian echolocators

<p><span>Resource partitioning may facilitate the coexistence of sympatric species with similar ecological requirements. Here, we study a colony of unusual echolocating birds called swiftlets, which nest underground on an island off the coast of Singapore. The colony comprises two congeneric swiftlet species, black-nest swiftlets (<em>Aerodramus maximus</em>) and edible-nest swiftlets (<em>A</em>. <em>fuciphagus</em>), nesting at high densities and in close proximity. Bioacoustic recordings and monitoring of nesting biology at the site across multiple seasons revealed significant differences in echolocation calls as well as survival rates between the species, with the larger black-nest swiftlet nesting at locations with the highest fledging rates. We also observe an additional off-season breeding peak by the smaller species, the edible-nest swiftlet. Unexpectedly, off-season egg hatching rates were significantly higher compared to rates during the shared breeding season (mean difference = 14%). Our study on the breeding biology of these echolocating cave-dwelling birds provides an example of spatial and temporal strategies that animals employ to partition resources within a confined habitat.</span></p>

Resource allocation effects on the timing of reproduction in an avian habitat specialist

<p>Variation in nutrient allocation can influence the timing of breeding and ultimately reproductive output. Time and space constraints might exist, however, if fewer food resources are available to meet the costs of reproduction early during the reproductive season. Here, for the first time, we test whether nutrient allocation strategies for reproduction in a shrub-dependent avian species differs with timing of breeding in different ecoregions: a high-elevation landscape, containing spatially complex vegetation (Rocky Mountains) versus a low-elevation, more homogenous landscape (Great Plains). We analyzed data collected from radio-telemetry and stable isotopes to assess the degree to which endogenous (body) reserves are used for reproduction and whether variation in allocation strategies was associated with time of year, ecoregion, habitat quality (including sagebrush type and plant greenness), or maternal characteristics. Using a Bayesian statistical framework, we found that females relied on a similar amount of endogenous reserves for reproduction in first nesting and renesting attempts. Additionally, endogenous contributions declined more rapidly throughout the nesting season in the Rocky Mountains than in the Great Plains. Individuals in high- and intermediate-elevation sagebrush types in the Rocky Mountains used similar amounts of endogenous reserves, whereas females nesting in low-elevation sagebrush used less. Females nesting at intermediate elevations, which experience the greatest flush of new green vegetation during the nesting season, switched their reliance from endogenous to exogenous sources for reproduction as green vegetation became available during spring. Our study highlights adaptations of a nutrient-allocation strategy across areas with varying levels of resources in time and space in a habitat specialist bird. Nutrient allocation by individuals residing in high-elevation areas favors a strategy that mainly uses nutrients gained from wintering habitats, whereas individuals residing in low-elevation areas mainly use exogenous sources for reproduction.</p>
