Greenhouse gas profiles from the 2021 HEMERA-TWIN balloon launch

<p>The dataset contains mixing ratio observations of o long-lived greenhouse gase carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and (SF6) from the HEMERA TWIN gonodola launch from Kiruna (Sweden) on 12. August 2021. Profile data for CO2 and CH4 from AirCore sampling and CH4 data from the PICO IR laser spectrometer cover altitudes from the PBL to 32km. 14 cryogenic air samples collected between 14 and 31 km altitude have been analysed for all four gases.</p>

Data from the Untethered Balloon Launch of a Holographic Imager Into Cloud Near Adelaide, South Australia in August 2020

<p>This dataset was obtained from an untethered balloon launch into cloud near Adelaide, South Australia in August 2020. The balloon payload train consisted of a holographic imager, polarsonde, webcam, and meteorological sensors.</p> <p>Data is organised as follows:</p> <ol> <li>A netcdf file consisting of; <ul> <li>Raw RS41 radiosonde and data logger temperature and relative humidity profiles</li> <li>Mean number density (30-second averaged) from the holographic imager &nbsp;</li> <li>Mean equivalent diameter (30-second averaged) from the holographic imager &nbsp;</li> <li>Raw polarsonde co and cross polarisation signals</li> </ul> </li> <li>A selection of focussed particle images&nbsp;</li> <li>A selection of webcam images</li> <li>A figure summarising the results of HYSPLIT back trajectory modelling for the launch (FigS1)</li> <li>A figure showing the HIMAWARI Cloud Type classification for the region surrounding the launch site (FigS2)</li> </ol> <p>This dataset can be used to reproduce the key figures of the following paper submitted to Atmospheric Measurement Techniques (under review 2023):&nbsp; &nbsp;</p> <p>'A Light-Weight Holographic Imager for Cloud Microphysical Studies from an Untethered Balloon'.</p> <p>Additional details about the instruments and measurements can be found in that publication.</p>

Polar mesospheric clouds from the Balloon Lidar Experiment (BOLIDE) during the PMC Turbo balloon mission

<p>This dataset contains BOLIDE lidar data obtained during the PMC Turbo balloon mission that was launched on 7 July 2018 from Esrange, Sweden and landed in Nunavut, Canada on 14 July 2018. The mission was designed to study small-scale atmospheric dynamics induced by breaking atmospheric gravity waves within the polar mesospheric cloud layer at ~82 km altitude. PMC Turbo floated at around 40 km altitude and carried seven digital cameras to image the polar mesospheric cloud layer and the first Rayleigh lidar to successfully operate from a balloon.</p> <p>The lidar data consists of volume backscatter coefficients of polar mesospheric clouds, available at 20 m vertical and 10 s temporal resolution, contained in a compressed netcdf file. The magnitude of volume backscatter coefficients scales with<br> the brightness of clouds imaged by the PMC Turbo cameras. ATLAS Backward Trajectory Dataset for the Palau Atmospheric Observatory Balloon-borne ozonesonde record 2016-2019

<p>The ATLAS Backward Trajectory Dataset for the Palau Atmospheric Observatory (PAO) Balloon-borne ozonesonde record V1.0&nbsp; provides backward trajectory data in NetCDF format calculated by the transport module of the Lagrangian Chemistry and Transport Model ATLAS (Wohltmann and Rex, 2009; Wohltmann et al., 2010) for coinciding Electrochemical Concentration Cell (ECC) ozonesonde measurements from the PAO located in Koror, Palau (7.3420&deg; N, 134.4722&deg; E), in the Tropical West Pacific (TWP) from 2016- October 2019 (M&uuml;ller 2020, M&uuml;ller et al. 2023). 30-days backward trajectories with a time step of 10 minutes were initialized at the time of an ozonesonde measurement at the PAO for every tenth ozonesonde reading within a profile and for a total number of 138 soundings (= days) and between 0 and 20 km altitude.<br> The model was driven by 3D wind fields, temperatures and diabatic heating rates from the ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis dataset (1.125&deg; x 1.125&deg;) with a 3 hour temporal resolution (compare Hoffmann et al., 2019). The model uses a hybrid vertical coordinate (zeta) which gradually transforms from &quot;pressure&quot; at the surface to &quot;potential temperature&quot; in the stratosphere (see Wohltmann and Rex, 2009). The corresponding vertical velocities change from vertical winds in pressure coordinates to diabatic heating rates.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The Palau ECC record is currently being continued, will be available in the SHADOZ database in SHADOZ standard format in the near future, and can for now be found here: https://zenodo.org/record/6920648.</p> <p><strong>Please email katrin.mueller@awi.de and let us know what your intended purpose for the use of the data is. <p>The dataset uploaded on Zenodo consists of in-situ measurements from specialised balloon borne sondes used in the field campaign named BACIS (Balloon borne Aerosol Cloud Interaction Studies) conducted from Gadanki, a location in Southern Peninsular India. Note that raw data from the observations is only uploaded here. There is lot more post processing of data carried out during our analysis for brining out meaningful data. Hence the users are cautioned in using the raw data for analysis and kindly advised to approach us for the post processed, quality controlled data.&nbsp;</p>

Thin Filaments in an Average Magnetosphere: Pure Interchange vs. Ballooning Oscillations

<p>This paper describes magnetospheric waves of very long wavelength in thin magnetic filaments. We consider an average magnetospheric configuration with zero ionospheric conductance and calculate waves using two different formulations: classic interchange theory and ideal MHD. Classic interchange theory, which is developed in detail in this paper, is basically analytic and is relatively straightforward to determine computationally, but it can&rsquo;t offer very high accuracy.</p> <p>The two formalisms agree well for the plasma sheet and also for the inner magnetosphere. The eigenfrequencies range over about a factor of seven, but the formulations generally agree with a root-mean-square difference between the logarithms of interchange and MHD frequencies to be $\sim 0.054$. The pressure perturbations in the classic interchange theory are assumed constant along each field line, but the MHD computed pressure perturbations along the field line vary in a range $\sim 30 \%$ in the plasma sheet but are larger in the inner magnetosphere. The parallel and perpendicular displacements, which are very different in the plasma sheet and inner magnetosphere, show good qualitative agreement between the two approaches. In the plasma sheet, the perpendicular displacements are strongly concentrated in the equatorial plane, whereas the parallel displacements are spread through most of the plasma sheet away from the equatorial plane; and can be regarded as buoyancy waves. In the inner magnetosphere, the displacements are more sinusoidal and are more like conventional slow modes. The different forms of the waves are best characterized by the flux tube entropy $PV^\gamma$.</p>

High Altitude Balloon by Julián Fernández RF recording 2019-05-19

<p>This is a recording of an Amateur high altitude balloon released by Juli&aacute;n Fern&aacute;ndez EA4HCD on 2019-05-19. The balloon carried a LoRa and RTTY transmitter on 434.5MHz and a LoRa transmitter on 868MHz. The balloon was released near Madrid (Spain) and reached and altitude of 24km and distance of 180km. This recording was done from shortly after release until 15 minutes before burst.</p> <p>Amateur radio callsign: EA4GPZ</p> <p>Station location: 40.620697,-3.6936182, in Tres Cantos, near Madrid.</p> <p>Antenna: 7 element 435MHz yagi from Arrow Antennas, vertical polarization, roughly aimed to the balloon location, 3m above ground level.</p> <p>Receiver: FUNcube Dongle Pro+, LNA and mixer gain enabled.</p> <p>Frequency: 434.5MHz at the start of the recording, changed later to 434.502MHz without interruption of the recording.</p> <p>Sample rate: 192ksps.</p> <p>Recording start: 2019-05-19 15:37:19 UTC</p> <p>Format: Linrad raw format: 41 byte header followed by little-endian int16 IQ data.</p>
