Data used in the manuscript - A Hierarchical Approach for Evaluating Athlete Performance with an Application in Elite Basketball

<p>The database&nbsp;contains several datasets and files with NBA statistical data spanning four seasons (2015-2016 to 2018-2019). These datasets were procured from the Basketball Reference database (https://www.basketball-reference.com/), a publicly accessible source of NBA data.&nbsp;</p> <p>The main file, `dat.cleaned.csv`, includes the Win/Loss records for all thirty NBA teams, along with box scores and advanced statistics. The data captured over the four seasons correspond to about 4,920 regular-season games. A distinguishing feature of this dataset is the repeated measurements per player within a team across the seasons. However, it&#39;s important to note that these repeated measurements are not independent, necessitating the use of hierarchical modelling to properly handle the data.</p> <p>Two sets of additional text files (`per_2017.txt`, `per_2018.txt`, `rpm_2017.txt`, `rpm_2018.txt`) provide specific metrics for player performance. The &#39;PER&#39; files contain the Athlete Efficiency Rating (PER) for the years 2017 and 2018. The &#39;RPM&#39; files contain the ESPN-developed score called Real Plus-Minus (RPM) for the same years.</p> <p>However, potential biases or limitations within the datasets should be acknowledged. For instance, the Basketball Reference website might not include data from some matches or may exclude certain variables, potentially affecting the quality and accuracy of the dataset.&nbsp;</p>

Hang-Time HAR: A Benchmark Dataset for Basketball Activity Recognition using Wrist-worn Inertial Sensors

<p>In this paper we present a benchmark dataset for evaluation of physical human activity recognition from wrist-worn sensors, for the specific setting of basketball training, drills, and games.<br> Basketball activities lend themselves well for measurement by wrist-worn inertial sensors, and systems that are able to detect such sport-relevant activities could be used in applications toward game analysis, guided training, and personal physical activity tracking.<br> The dataset was recorded for two teams from separate countries (USA and Germany) with a total of 24 players who wore an inertial sensor on their wrist and spanned both repetitive basketball training sessions and full games.<br> Particular features of this dataset include an inherent variance through cultural differences in game rules and styles as the data was recorded in two countries, as well as different sport skill levels, since the participants were heterogeneous in terms of prior basketball experience.<br> We illustrate the datasets&#39; features in several time-series analyses and report on a baseline classification performance study with a state-of-the-art deep learning architecture.</p>

Basketball made by Karhu

This brown leather basketball was made by Karhu in 1951. Basketball was still a young sport in Finland in the 1950's. The national basketball association had been founded just before the war in 1939. This newcomer status was reflected in the fact that the balls used at the Olympic basketball tournament in 1952 were provided by Karhu's Italian rival company. In most other sports the Olympic organisers favoured equipment produced by Finnish domestic manufacturers. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

PHYAFB: A new database of the analysis of the physiological needs in amateur female basketball during official matches

<p>The Physiological Analysis of Female Basketball players (PHYAFB) database is a valuable resource for studying the physiological demands placed on female amateur basketball players during official games. This database includes heart rate data from ten female players aged between 18 and 26 years, which were collected during ten high-stress matches played during a crucial relegation phase. In total, almost 350,000 heart rate samples have been reported. The data is stored in CSV format, facilitating easy access and analysis, and the database comes with Python&nbsp;source code to support initial examination.</p><p>The primary aim of the PHYAFB database is to provide a useful reference for other teams facing similar situations. Furthermore, the database represents a unique and valuable resource for sports scientists, coaches, and trainers seeking to comprehend the physiological demands of female basketball players during official competitions. Through the analysis of heart rate data, coaches and trainers can identify the intensity and duration of physical activity during games, enabling the development of more effective training programs. Additionally, the database can be used to compare the physiological demands placed on male and female basketball players or to investigate the impact of different game strategies on player performance.</p>

The impact of team and athlete activist behaviors on fan loyalty and team identification: A study on the changing dynamics of fan loyalty in the Chinese Basketball Association

<p>This research examines brand loyalty and team identification among fans of professional basketball and Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) teams and how loyalty to basketball, CBA teams and athletes is impacted by the changing dynamics of the fanbase. Brand loyalty in sports is complex and fan attachment to teams often provoke intense emotional responses. The research employed a Likert-type survey questionnaire pre- and post-test and an emotional response pictorial assessment using Self-Assessment Manakin (SAM) to measure emotional dimensions (valence and arousal). Descriptive and parametric statistics were used to measure the relationships between CBA team loyalty, emotional response and team and player social activist behaviors. The research also assesses the relationships between demographics and background and team and player activist behaviors to determine changes in fan dynamics. The findings show moderate positive relationships between fan loyalty, team and player activist behaviors, younger age and middle income. These findings suggest that CBA fans who are committed to and identify with their favorite teams tend to have greater emotional responses to negative and positive media about their teams and that strong emotions toward team efforts for community activism and sustainability are likely to drive stronger feelings of loyalty to teams.</p>

Data from: Trait compensation and sex-specific aging of performance in male and female professional basketball players

Phenotypic traits are often influenced by dynamic resource allocation trade-offs which, when occurring over the course of individual lifespans, may manifest as trait aging. Although aging is studied for a variety of traits that are closely tied to reproduction or reproductive effort, the aging of multiple traits related to fitness in other ways are less well understood. We took advantage of almost 30 years of data on human whole-organism performance in the National Basketball Association (U.S.A.) to examine trends of aging in performance traits associated with scoring. Given that patterns of aging differ between sexes in other animal species, we also analysed a smaller dataset on players in the Women's National Basketball Association to test for potential sex differences in the aging of comparable traits. We tested the hypothesis that age-related changes in a specific aspect of overall performance can be compensated for by elevated expression of another, related aspect. Our analyses suggest that the aging of performance traits used in basketball is generally characterised by senescence in males, whereas age-related changes in basketball performance are less evident in females. Our data also indicate a different rate of senescence of different performance traits associated with scoring over a male's lifetime.
