<p>This statistical analysis corresponds to the behavioral perspective of a large experiment in which <em>Constrictotermes cyphergaster</em> (Blattodea: Isoptera: Termitidae: Nasutitermitinae) termite groups were submitted to four different alarm stimuli. The aim of the work was to known the effect, at the individual scale, of the intensity of alarm stimuli in the emergence of order/disorder in group responses of social groups.</p> <p>The “read-me” file contains a detailed description of each data table used for the analysis. In the data tables, columns correspond to variables and rows to observations. Explanation of variables is on the headers of each data table.</p>

BEHAVIOURAL PATTERNS OF CHILDREN IN KADUNA STATE ORPHANAGES: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS
<p><strong><span>Background: -</span></strong><span> The plight of orphans, exacerbated by conflict, disease, and socioeconomic factors, remains a pressing global issue, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Nigeria, notably impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, terrorism, and natural disasters, has witnessed a substantial increase in orphan populations. These children face severe challenges, including child abuse, malnutrition, limited access to education, stigmatization, and a range of psychological and behavioral disorders. Despite some interventions, orphanages primarily address material needs, often neglecting comprehensive medical, social, and psychosocial support. This study explores the behavioral patterns of orphans in Kaduna, Nigeria, and examines how their medical and social challenges compare across various orphanages.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methodology: -</span></strong><span> A cross-sectional, comparative analysis was conducted among 100 orphans from selected orphanages in Kaduna. Data were collected through interviewer-administered questionnaires assessing socio-demographics, medical conditions, behavioral patterns, stigma, psychosocial status, and coping strategies.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Results: - </span></strong><span>The mean age of respondents was 10 years, with 68% being male. Nutritional issues were prevalent, with 53.7% classified as underweight despite 54.9% reportedly consuming balanced diets. Medical concerns were significant, with 33.7% showing clinical signs of illness and 46.7% not fully immunized. Behavioral issues were prominent, including hyperactivity symptoms (27.0%), enuresis (22.3%), and depressive symptoms (1.8%). Socially, most respondents (83.3%) reported positive peer relationships, though bullying (11.4%) and stigmatization (9%) were also observed. Educational access was generally high, with only 2.2% not attending school. However, social support systems varied, with 35.2% reporting strong support and 46.8% adapting their goals as a coping mechanism.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Conclusion: - </span></strong><span>The findings highlight the complex medical and behavioral challenges faced by orphans in Kaduna's orphanages, underscoring the need for integrated interventions that provide medical, psychosocial, and educational support. A holistic approach is crucial to improving their overall well-being and future prospects.</span></p>

Optimal searching behaviour generated intrinsically by the central pattern generator for locomotion
<p>Efficient searching for resources such as food by animals is key to their survival. It has been proposed that diverse animals from insects to sharks and humans adopt searching patterns that resemble a simple Lévy random walk, which is theoretically optimal for 'blind foragers' to locate sparse, patchy resources. To test if such patterns are generated intrinsically, or arise via environmental interactions, we tracked free-moving <i>Drosophila</i> larvae with (and without) blocked synaptic activity in the brain, suboesophageal ganglion (SOG) and sensory neurons. In brain-blocked larvae we found that extended substrate exploration emerges as multi-scale movement paths similar to truncated Lévy walks. Strikingly, power-law exponents of brain/SOG/sensory-blocked larvae averaged 1.96, close to a theoretical optimum (µ = 2.0) for locating sparse resources. Thus, efficient spatial exploration can emerge from autonomous patterns in neural activity. Our results provide the strongest evidence so far for the intrinsic generation of Lévy-like movement patterns.</p>

Data from: Empirically testing the influence of light regime on diel activity patterns in a marine predator reveals complex interacting factors shaping behaviour
<p>Diel cycles in marine predator diving behaviour centre around the light-mediated diel vertical migration (DVM) of prey, and are considered critical for optimizing foraging and limiting competition across global seascapes. Yet our understanding of predator diel behaviour is based primarily on examining relative depth usage between constant day/night cycles with no formal investigation of how varying light regimes interact with abiotic factors to shape diel activity. The extreme seasonal light regimes (midnight sun, polar night, day/night cycle) in the Arctic provide a unique natural experimental setting to empirically investigate the occurrence and intensity of diel behaviour in marine predators relative to changing light levels while concomitantly assessing interacting abiotic factors. Depth time series data from satellite-linked tags deployed on six belugas for up to 12 months were used to quantify diel behaviour by calculating dissimilarity in time-at-depth between periods of low and high solar altitude on each day. Generalized additive mixed effects models were used to examine the influence of hours of daylight across extreme light cycles, coupled with bathymetry and sea ice concentration; focal diel patterns were further examined relative to the thermal structure of the water column. As predicted, belugas exhibited cathemerality during the midnight sun, and initiated diel behaviour with the onset of the fall day/night cycle, with a marked increase in its intensity with the progression to equal day/night length. Occurrence of diel patterns, however, was complex; ceasing in regions with seafloor depths < 700 m, and occurring with greatest intensity when the water column was thermally homogeneous within the upper 150 m. Through empirical investigation, this study demonstrates that the onset of day/night light cycles and presumably associated prey DVM can modulate predator diel dive behaviour under certain circumstances, but highlights how the complex interaction of abiotic factors with light regime shape dynamic spatiotemporal patterns. These findings, building on a body of recent work, emphasize that the traditional view of the ubiquitous occurrence of diel behaviour tied to DVM at the base of the food web oversimplifies vertical predator-prey interactions, identifying the need for more structured investigation. </p>
Sensory evolution in a cavefish radiation: Patterns of neuromast distribution and associated behaviour in Sinocyclocheilus (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae)
<p><em>Sinocyclocheilus</em>, a large radiation of freshwater cavefish, are well-known for their presence of regressive features (e.g., variable eye reduction). Fewer constructive features are known, such as the expansion of the lateral line system (LLS) involved in detecting water movements. The precise relationship between LLS expansion and cave adaptation is not well understood. Here we examine morphological and behavioural features of the LLS in <em>Sinocyclocheilus</em> characterized by broad variation in eye size, habitat and geographic distribution. Using live-staining techniques and automated behavioural analyses, we examined 26 <em>Sinocyclocheilus</em> species and quantified neuromast organ numbers, positions, and laterality within a phylogenetic context. We then examined how these morphological features may relate to wall-following, an established cave-associated behaviour mediated by the lateral line. We show that most species demonstrated laterality (i.e., asymmetry) in neuromast organs on the head, often biased to the right. We also found that wall-following behaviour was distinctive within cavefish, particularly among eyeless species. These diverse patterns of LLS expansion appear to correlate with the degree of eye loss, as well as geographic distribution. This work reveals that constructive LLS evolution is convergent across distant cavefish taxa, and may mediate asymmetric behavioural features that enable survival in stark subterranean microenvironments.</p>

<ol> <li>Conservation of threatened species and anthropogenic threat mitigation commonly rely on spatially managed areas selected according to habitat preference. Since the impact of threats can be behaviour-specific, such information could be incorporated into spatial management to improve conservation outcomes. However, collecting spatially explicit behavioural data is challenging.</li> <li>Using multi-sensor biologging tags containing high-resolution movement sensors (e.g., accelerometer, magnetometer, GPS) and animal-borne video cameras, combined with supervised machine learning, we developed a method to automatically identify and geolocate typically ambiguous behaviours for the poorly understood flatback turtle <em>Natator depressus</em>. Subsequently, we evaluated behaviour-specific spatiotemporal patterns of habitat use.</li> <li>Boosted regression trees successfully identified the presence of foraging and resting in 7074 dives (AUC > 0.9), using dive features representing characteristics of locomotory activity, body posture, and three-dimensional dive paths validated by ancillary video data. Foraging was characterised by dives with longer duration, variable depth, tortuous bottom phases; resting was characterised by dives with decreased locomotory activity and longer duration bottom phases.</li> <li>Foraging and resting showed minimal spatial segregation based on 50% and 95% utilisation distributions. Expected diel patterns of behaviour-specific habitat use were superseded by the extreme tides at the near-shore study site. Turtles rested in areas close to the subtidal and intertidal boundary within larger overlapping foraging areas, allowing efficient access to intertidal food resources upon inundation at high tides when foraging was ~25% more likely.</li> <li> <em>Synthesis and applications:</em><span> Using supervised machine learning and biologging tools, we show the potential for dynamic spatial management of flatback turtles to mitigate behaviour-specific threats by prioritising protection of important locations at pertinent times. Although results are a species-specific response to a super-tidal environment</span>, our approach can be generalised to a broad range of taxa and study systems, facilitating a conceptual advance in spatial management.</li> </ol>
