Catching the audience in a job interview: Effects of emotion regulation strategies on subjective, physiological, and behavioural responses

This study compares the effects of Combined Cognitive Reappraisal (CCR: acceptance and reappraise via perspective-taking) and suppression using the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). One hundred participants were randomly assigned to one of the two groups and subjective, physiological, and behavioural data were recorded. Continuous electrocardiography was recorded to measure heart rate variability (HRV) and stress levels. Affective ratings were provided before and after the TSST. Behavioural expressions were videotaped and analysed independently. Trait social anxiety/fear, age and gender entered as covariates. Although no group differences were found on affective ratings, the CCR group presented less physiological stress, higher HRV, their speech was better perceived, displayed more affiliative smile and hand gestures. Results suggested that CCR is more appropriate than suppression for managing social stress situations.</p>

<p>The study is part of the large project promoted by WHO Regional Office for Europe called “<em>Monitoring knowledge, risk perceptions, preventive behaviours and trust to inform pandemic outbreak response</em>” and carried out in over 30 countries of the WHO European Region (Registered ISRCTN on 11/05/2021, ID: ISRCTN26200758). In Italy, the survey was conducted administering an online questionnaire developed <em>ad hoc</em> by the WHO in four waves (January-May 2021) to a sample of 10.000 individuals aged 18-70 years. A detailed sampling plan was developed to obtain a representative sample of the Italian adult population. The following variables were taken into account for stratification of the participants: gender by age (four age groups: 18-34 years, 35-44 years, 45-54 years, 55-70 years); geographical area (four areas: North West, North East, Centre, South and Islands); size of living centers (two classes: above and below 100,000 inhabitants); level of education (up to lower middle school, beyond lower middle school); and employment situation (employed, not employed). At the end of each survey’s wave, a weighting procedure has been applied to accurately restore the proportionality of the total sample examined with the reference population, according to the most recent data of the Italian Statistics Institute (ISTAT, 12/31/2019). In particular, data have been weighted for the main socio-demographic and geographic variables (e.g., sex by age by geographical area, occupation, educational qualification, geographical area by size of living centers). The sample size made it possible to maintain a sampling error of less than 2% (at the significance level of 95%) and to control the error of estimates within groups or subgroups of interest. The interviews were conducted by Doxa S.p.a. and carried out with the CAWI technique (Computer Assisted Web Interviewing) on an online panel and on the Confirmit software platform used by Doxa S.p.a. The average administration time was about 18-20 minutes. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the IRCCS San John of God Fatebenefratelli of Brescia (n° 72-2020), and all participants provided written informed consent.</p> <p>The primary objectives are to:</p> <p>● Monitor variables that are critical for population behaviour to control transmission of the novel coronavirus, including risk perceptions, knowledge, self-efficacy, confidence in institutions, behaviours, rumours, affect, worry, resilience, trust in/use of information sources and more.<br> ● Document changes over time in these factors to understand the effect of the pandemic process, new developments, events or measures taken.<br> ● Monitor possible issues, e.g. related to misinformation or distrust, as they emerge, to allow early response.<br> ● Identify relationships between variables to identify levers for effective and appropriate responses.<br> ● Explore the relationship of psychological variables (e.g. worry, resilience, trust, affect) with the epidemiological situation and the events and measures taken.<br> ● Identify gaps between perceived and actual knowledge.<br> ● Evaluate the effectiveness of pandemic response measures, and the acceptance and effectiveness of policies and restrictions implemented, including the easing of such restrictions.<br> The secondary objectives are to:<br> ● Contribute to post-outbreak evaluation, thereby contributing to the continued regional/global efforts to better understand mechanisms of crisis response.<br> ● If additional research capacity is available, the data can be triangulated with data on media reporting, COVID-19 cases and other.● If additional research capacity is available, the data can be triangulated with data on media reporting, imported or confirmed cases, etc.: The relationship between psychological variables and characteristics of the outbreak situation can be explored (i.e. how closely the perceived risk mirrors reported cases, relative import risk, media reports).<br> This approach allows a citizen-centred approach where insights into population perceptions and behaviours inform COVID-19 actions, alongside epidemiological data and considerations of economic, cultural, ethical, structural political nature and other.</p> <p>The WHO questionnaire includes 21 different thematic areas noteworthy for the investigation of COVID-19 experience. The questionnaire was translated into specific country language by each recruiting site, following the WHO’s guidelines for translations of tools into other languages. The process included the following steps: forward translation, panel experts, back-translation, pre-test and cognitive interviews and, finally, development of the final version. Elevated temperature effects on animal personality: hormonal stress response underlying behavioural differences in the American bullfrog

Behaviours analyzed: movements against the wall of the maze, posture changes, total ambulatory distance (m), and time on the centre of the arena (s).</p> <p>Hormone_data.csv: raw hormone (corticosterone and testosterone) data collected from individual bullfrogs in four different time points: baseline, 12 hours after stress, 24 days after stress, and 47 days after stress.</p> <p>Mass_data.csv: raw mass data collected from individual bullfrogs at the beginning and end of the experiment. SVL = snout-vent length. Body index is calculated as the residuals of a linear regression between mass as dependent variable and SVL as independent variable.</p>
Data and R script for: Shoaling behaviour in response to turbidity in three-spined sticklebacks
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Many fresh and coastal waters are becoming increasingly turbid because of human activities, which may disrupt the visually-mediated behaviours of aquatic organisms. Shoaling fish typically depend on vision to maintain collective behaviour, which has a range of benefits including protection from predators, enhanced foraging efficiency, and access to mates. Previous studies of the effects of turbidity on shoaling behaviour have focussed on changes to nearest neighbour distance and average group-level behaviours. Here, we investigated whether and how experimental shoals of three-spined sticklebacks (<em><span>Gasterosteus aculeatus</span></em>) in clear (<10 <span>Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU))</span> and turbid (~35 NTU<span>) </span>conditions differed in five local-level behaviours of individuals (nearest and furthest neighbour distance, heading difference with nearest neighbour, bearing angle to nearest neighbour, and swimming speed). These variables are important for the emergent group-level properties of shoaling behaviour. We found an indirect effect of turbidity on nearest-neighbour distances driven by a reduction in swimming speed, and a direct effect of turbidity which increased variability in furthest neighbour distances. In contrast, the alignment and relative position of individuals was not significantly altered in turbid compared to clear conditions. Overall, our results suggest that the shoals were usually robust to adverse effects of turbidity on collective behaviour, but group cohesion was occasionally lost during periods of instability.</span></p>

Understanding behavioural responses to human-induced rapid environmental change: A meta-analysis
<p>Behavioural responses are often the first reaction of an organism to human induced rapid environmental change (HIREC), yet current empirical evidence provides no consensus about the main environmental features that animals respond to behaviourally or which behaviours are responsive to HIREC. To understand how changes in behaviour can be predicted by different forms of HIREC, we conducted a meta-analysis of the existing empirical literature focusing on behavioural responses to five axes of environmental change (climate change, changes in CO<sub>2</sub>, direct human impact, changes in nutrients and biotic exchanges) in five behavioural domains (aggression, exploration, activity, boldness and sociability) across a range of taxa but with a focus on fish and bird species. Our meta-analysis revealed a general absence of directional behavioural responses to HIREC. However, the absolute magnitude of the effect sizes was large. This means that animals have strong behavioural responses to HIREC, but the responses are not clearly in any particular direction. Moreover, absolute magnitude of the effect sizes differed between different behaviours and different forms of HIREC: Exploration responded more strongly than activity, and climate change induced the strongest behavioural responses. Model heterogeneities identified that effect sizes varied primarily because of study design, and the specific sample of individuals used in a study; phylogeny also explains significant variation in our bird model. Based on these results, we make four recommendations to further our understanding: 1) a more balanced representation of laboratory and field studies, 2) consideration of context dependency, 3) standardisation of the methods and definitions used to quantify and study behaviours, and 4) consideration of the role for individual differences in behaviour.</p>

Data from: The impact of personality, morphotype and shore-height on temperature-mediated behavioural responses in the beadlet anemone (Actinia equina)
1. Between-individual variation in behavioural phenotype, termed personality, is an important determinant of how populations cope with acute environmental fluctuation related to climate change. 2. Personality in the beadlet sea anemone (Actinia equina) is linked to genetically distinct morphotypes, which are associated with different heights on the shore. In the intertidal zone, high-shore environments experience more environmental fluctuation due to longer periods of exposure, and animals adapted to live in these environments are predicted to deal more effectively with environmental perturbation than their low-shore counterparts. 3. We collected beadlet anemones of two different morphotypes from three different shore-heights. We investigated variation in two behaviours at three different temperatures and in a temporal control treatment where the temperature was not changed: startle response-time, the time it took an anemone to re-extend its tentacles after a threatening stimulus, and immersion response-time, the time to re-extend tentacles after simulated tidal immersion. These behaviours reflect risk taking and allow individuals to be categorised as bold, shy or intermediate based upon response-times. 4. Both behaviours showed significant changes as the temperature increased. For immersion-response, the morphotype associated with the low-shore lengthened response-times at high temperatures. For startle-response, all animals lengthened their response-times at high temperatures but animals collected from the low-shore lengthened theirs to the greatest degree. At the individual level, although control individuals exhibited temporal changes in their response-times, a clear effect of temperature was present in both behaviours. Shy and bold individuals became more intermediate at higher temperatures in immersion-response (this effect was present to a lesser degree in control individuals), while intermediate individuals raised their response-times at higher temperatures for startle-response. 5. Given that prolonged tentacle retraction reduces foraging opportunities and can negatively impact respiratory efficiency, our data suggest that some individuals within a single population of A.equina, particularly those associated with the lower-shore, may exhibit less effective behavioural responses to temperature-shifts than others. These findings demonstrate that acute temperature changes influence risk-taking, and could have profound short and long-term implications for survival in the face of climate change. 16-Jun-2020
Behavioural responses to warming differentially impact survival in introduced and native dung beetles
<p>Background: Anthropogenic changes are often studied in isolation but may interact to affect biodiversity. For example, climate change could exacerbate the impacts of biological invasions if climate change differentially affects invasive and native species. Behavioural plasticity may mitigate some of the impacts of climate change, but species vary in their degree of behavioural plasticity. In particular, invasive species may have greater behavioural plasticity than native species since plasticity helps invasive species establish and spread in new environments. This plasticity could make invasives better able to cope with climate change.</p> <p>Goal: Here our goal was to examine whether reproductive behaviours and behavioural plasticity vary between an introduced and a native Onthophagus dung beetle species in response to warming temperatures and how differences in behaviour influence offspring survival.</p> <p>Methods: Using a repeated measures design, we exposed small colonies of introduced O. taurus and native O. hecate to three temperature treatments, including a control, low warming, and high warming treatment, and then measured reproductive behaviours, including the number, size, and burial depth of brood balls. We reared offspring in their brood balls in developmental temperatures that matched those of the brood ball burial depth to quantify survival.</p> <p>Results: We found that the introduced O. taurus produced more brood balls and larger brood balls, and buried brood balls deeper than the native O. hecate in all treatments. However, the two species did not vary in the degree of behavioural plasticity in response to warming. Differences in reproductive behaviours did affect survival, such that warming temperatures had a greater effect on survival of offspring of native O. hecate compared to introduced O. taurus.</p> <p>Broader implications: Overall, our results suggest that differences in behaviour between native and introduced species is one mechanism through which climate change may exacerbate negative impacts of biological invasions. </p>
Migrants and residents of a long-lived seabird differ in their behavioural response to a stressor
<p>Inter-individual variation in behaviour has been recognised as a major driver of population ecology, but its relationship to migratory strategy has been ill-explored. Here, we investigated whether male migrant and resident Cory's Shearwaters (<i>Calonectris borealis</i>), a long-lived partially migratory seabird, are distinguishable by their temperament at the colony. We tracked a large number of individuals over two winters using GLS devices and assessed whether exploratory behaviour and reaction to extraction from the nest corresponded to migratory strategy over this period. While exploratory behaviour was unrelated to migratory strategy, birds that were resident were more likely to be unreactive towards extraction from the nest. This difference in behavioural stress response, together with previous findings that migrants display higher physiological stress over winter, suggests that migrants and residents may be distinguishable by their stress threshold.</p>
