Changes in participant behaviour and attitudes are associated with knowledge and skills gained by using a turtle conservation citizen science app

Citizen science has become a popular way to collect biodiversity data and engage the wider public in scientific research. It has the potential to improve the knowledge and skills of participants, and positively change their behaviour and attitude towards the environment. Citizen science outcomes are particularly valuable for wildlife conservation, as they could help alleviate human impacts on the environment. We used an online questionnaire to investigate the consequences of participating in an Australian turtle mapping app, TurtleSAT, on skills and knowledge gain, and test for any association between these gains with behavioural or attitudinal changes reported by the participants. 148 citizen scientists completed our questionnaire, mostly from the states of New South Wales and Victoria. Participants listed TurtleSAT as the third most common source of knowledge about turtle ecology and conservation, after a talk about turtles and personal observations/research. Citizen scientists who participated more often were more knowledgeable about turtles than infrequent users. Self-reported gains in knowledge and skills were positively linked to attitudinal and behavioural changes, such as being more aware of turtles on roads. However, behaviour and attitude changes were not related to participation rate. Respondents also reported that after learning about the current decline in turtle populations, they adopted several turtle-friendly practices, such as habitat restoration or moving turtles out of harm's way, underlining the importance of increasing people's awareness on species declines. The reported changes in attitudes and behaviours are likely to positively impact the conservation of Australian freshwater turtles. Engagement with citizen science projects like TurtleSAT may result in participants being more interested in the natural world, by learning more about it and being more exposed to it, and therefore contribute more actively to its protection.

Spatial clustering of trumpetfish shadowing behaviour in the Caribbean Sea revealed by citizen science

<p>The West Atlantic trumpetfish (Aulostomus maculatus) performs an unusual hunting strategy, termed shadowing, whereby a trumpetfish swims closely behind or next to another 'host' species to facilitate the capture of prey. Despite trumpetfish being observed throughout the Caribbean, observations of this behaviour appear to be concentrated to a handful of localities. Here we assess the degree of geographical clustering of shadowing behaviour throughout the Caribbean Sea, and identify ecological features associated with the likelihood of its occurrence. To do this, we used a citizen science approach by creating and distributing an online survey to target frequent divers across this region. While the vast majority of participants observed trumpetfish on nearly every dive across the Caribbean, using random labelling spatial analyses, we found the frequency of shadowing behaviour was geographically clustered; participants that were within ~ 120 km of each other reported observations of shadowing that were more similar than would be expected by chance. Our survey also highlighted that trumpetfish were more likely to be observed shadowing than observed alone in a particular habitat type, and with particular host species, suggesting potential ecological factors that could drive the uneven distribution of this behaviour. Our results demonstrate that this behavioural hunting strategy is spatially clustered and, more generally, highlight the power of using citizen science to investigate variation in animal behaviour over thousands of square kilometres.</p>

Citizen science reveals a geographic mosaic of trumpetfish shadowing behaviour in the Caribbean Sea

<p>Citizen science is often used to assess the distribution and abundance of species, but it can be extended to identify the occurrence of different animal behaviours, generating hypotheses for the fields of behavioural ecology, conservation, and evolutionary biology. Here we use a targeted citizen science approach to map the prevalence and spatial spread of a fish's unusual hunting strategy across the Caribbean Sea. Using a standardised questionnaire targeting regular scuba divers, we quantified the occurrence of a behaviour termed 'shadowing', where West Atlantic trumpetfish (<i>Aulostomatus maculeatus</i>) swim behind or next to another 'host' species when hunting prey. While the vast majority of participants observed trumpetfish on nearly every dive, using spatial analyses, we found the frequency of shadowing behaviour was geographically clustered within the Caribbean, particularly to within ~100 km ranges. Our survey also highlighted that shadowing behaviour was more likely to occur in particular habitat types, and with particular host species, suggesting potential mechanisms for such clustering. Our results not only identify a mosaic of different hunting behaviours across thousands of square kilometres, but more generally, demonstrates the power of using citizen science to investigate behaviours over spatial scales that would otherwise be unfeasible.</p>
