Large SEM-BSE images of hydrated belite of ages from 14 days up to 1 year
<p>This dataset contains 8-Bit SEM-BSE images of commercially available dicalcium silicate (C2S; belite; Vustah, Czech Republic). The belite was mixed with a water/binder ratio of 0.5. The paste was the cast in small sealed containers, which were submersed with water. The specimens were stored at 22 ± 2°C.</p> <p>After the desired hydration times (14, 28, 84, 365 days) the hydration was stopped by immersing the prisms in isopropanol and drying them at 60°C for 12 hours. The dried prisms were then embedded in low viscosity epoxy resin and mechanically polished using diamond paste with a grain size down to 0.25 µm. Finally, the specimens were coatet with a thin layer of carbon to avoid charging.</p> <p>The images were acquired at 12 kV using a CBS (concentric backscatter) detector within a Thermofischer Helios G4 UX.</p> <p><strong>Table 1</strong>: Basic information like resolution, size and phase composition of the images.</p> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td><strong>file</strong></td> <td><strong>age</strong></td> <td><strong>size</strong></td> <td><strong>size</strong></td> <td><strong>area</strong></td> <td><strong>pores</strong></td> <td><strong>hydrates</strong></td> <td><strong>clinker</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td>in days</td> <td>in px</td> <td>in µm</td> <td>in mm²</td> <td>area-%</td> <td>area-%</td> <td>area-%</td> </tr> <tr> <td>C2S 14d.tif</td> <td>14</td> <td>36864 x 36864</td> <td>1554.0 x 1554.0</td> <td>2.41</td> <td>31.4</td> <td>43.5</td> <td>25.2</td> </tr> <tr> <td>C2S 28d.tif</td> <td>28</td> <td>36864 x 36864</td> <td>1554.0 x 1554.0</td> <td>2.41</td> <td>15.9</td> <td>62.6</td> <td>21.5</td> </tr> <tr> <td>C2S 84d.tif</td> <td>84</td> <td>36864 x 36864</td> <td>1554.0 x 1554.0</td> <td>2.41</td> <td>19.3</td> <td>65.6</td> <td>15.2</td> </tr> <tr> <td>C2S 365d.tif</td> <td>365</td> <td>36864 x 36864</td> <td>1554.0 x 1554.0</td> <td>2.41</td> <td>23.8</td> <td>64.4</td> <td>12.0</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p>The proportions of pores, hydrates and unhydrated clinker shown in table 1 are the result of manual thresholding of denoised versions of these images and may therefore differ to own measurements.</p> <p>The scaling is backed into the file and can be read using ImageJ/Fiji.</p> <p>The unstitched files are provded as 7z archives. Dataset for "Influence of curing temperature on belite cement hydration: a comparative study with Portland cement" paper
<p>Dataset for paper (doi: <a title="Persistent link using digital object identifier" href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cemconres.2021.106499" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><span>https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cemconres.2021.106499</span></a>) with the abstract "Belite cements (BCs) could be a more sustainable binder than Portland cements (PCs) but adequate knowledge of the hydration features has still to be built. In particular, the mild curing hydration temperature effects have been extensively studied for PCs but not for BCs. This research was triggered by a previous work reporting improved mechanical strengths of BCs at higher curing temperatures. Here, we report the hydration characteristics of a BC at 20, 40 and 60ºC and compared to those of a typical PC. We have corroborated previous findings and used a multi-technique approach including Rietveld phase analysis, thermal analysis, calorimetry, silicon MAS-NMR, mercury intrusion porosimetry and chiefly synchrotron X-ray microtomography, to thoroughly understand the different behavior. In a nutshell, the improved mechanical performances at mild curing temperatures for BCs are due to a much larger belite degree of reaction without a significant porosity coarsening."</p>
Synthesis and scaled-up of standard and active Belite-Alite-Ye'elimite clinker (BAY)
<p><strong>ABSTRACT:</strong> Clinkers with the coexistence of belite-alite-ye´elimite (BAY) are considered as eco-friendly cements due to the reduced CO2 emissions released during their manufacture. All BAY clinkering parameters have been optimized: raw materials, mineralizers/activators, clinkering conditions and scaled-up methodology. Two types of clinkers were prepared and scaled-up to have ~2 kg: i) standard-BAY (28.4 wt% of b-belite, 41.5 wt% of alite and 17.4 wt% of ye'elimite) by adding CaF2 and ZnO to the raw mixture; and ii) active-BAY (18.1 wt% of α'H-belite, 42.1 wt% of b-belite, 15.8(2) wt% of alite, and 7.7(2) wt% of ye'elimite) by using optimized amounts of CaF2, ZnO and B2O3. The microscopy[P1] study has revealed that primary particle size of belite is larger (~10 µm) in the active clinker than in the standard one (~5 µm). Moreover, ferrite and alite have incorporated most of the Zn and F in their structures in both clinkers, while belite (b and α’H forms) has preferentially incorporated sulphur.</p>
Alite-Belite-Ye'elimite cements: effect of dopants on the clinker composition and properties
<p><strong>ABSTRACT:</strong> Clinkers with alite-belite-ye´elimite (ABY) are considered as eco-friendly cements. Clinkering (2 Kg) of two types of ABY clinkers was optimized: standard-ABY, with CaF2 and ZnO as dopants (32.6 wt% alite, 30.4 wt% b-belite and 15.6 wt% ye'elimite) and αABY, with CaF2, ZnO, B2O3, Na2O (14.4 wt% alite, 37.1 wt% b-belite, 18.5 wt% α'H-belite and 7.5 wt% ye'elimite). Zn and F were mainly incorporated in alite and ferrite, while S sulfur was mostly incorporated into Fluor-ellestadite, ye’elimite and, in lower percentages, in belite and ferrite, determined by EDS semi-quantitative. The effect of dopants on the hydration of the cement mortars has been tested. Thus, standard-ABY develops 29.9 MPa compressive strengths at 1 day while αABY does 16.8 MPa, mainly due to the higher amount of alite of the former. The presence of α’H-belite in αABY increases mechanical strengths at 28 days of hydration from 44.7 MPa of standard-ABY to 74.9 MPa.</p>
