Benthic Chlorophyll of Seagrass Sediment in Virginia Coastal Bays 2008-2021

This data set contains measurements of benthic chlorophyll content in surface sediments in restored Z. marina plots in the Virginia coastal bays. Samples were collected annually during June-July at restored seagrass plots and adjacent bare sediment plots. GPS locations of sampling plots are available in the companion data set VCR11180.

Seagrass shoot density and benthic chlorophyll density from the Seagrass Recovery Experiment, South Bay, VA 2020-2022

To understand intra-meadow stability, the Seagrass Recovery Experiment was designed to ask 1) is recovery faster at sites with less thermal stress owing to greater exchange with cooler oceanic water at the meadow edge? 2) what is the shape of recovery? and 3) what are the recovery mechanisms? To conduct this experiment, aboveground seagrass biomass was removed from 28.3 m2 plots within the interior and along an edge of a restored seagrass meadow in South Bay, VA. Sites 1-3 correspond to the meadow interior while sites 4-6 correspond to the northern edge. Each site was comprised of a control (i.e., C) where no seagrass was disturbed and a treatment (i.e., T) where seagrass was removed (n = 12 sites total, e.g., 1C, 1T, 2C...). This dataset includes monthly seagrass shoot counts between June-October 2020, May-October 2021, and April-October 2022. To further characterize differences between the meadow interior and edge, benthic chlorophyll samples were also collected.

Benthic chlorophyll concentrations and gross oxygenic photosynthesis rates in surficial estuarine intertidal sediments at sites on Sapelo Island and near the Satilla River from January, April, June and July 2001

Seasonal patterns of estuarine creek-bank and intertidal marsh benthic chlorophyll and gross oxygenic photosynthesis were investigated at several sites on Sapelo Island and the Satilla River in coastal Georgia. Benthic chlorophyll were measured in the bulk surface centimeter depth of sediment. Gross oxygenic photosynthesis rates were integrated over 100 um resolution measurements below the sediment water interface using oxygen microelectrodes. Several relatively pristine sites on Sapelo Island (Moses Hammock, Dean Creek and Marine Institute) and a presumably heavily impacted site (Dover Bluff) show similar levels of chlorophyll concentration and photosynthesis rate across bank and marsh zones with higher photosynthetic biomass and activity in the spring season. Nutrient inputs to these study sites are also suggested as a control on gross oxygenic photosynthesis rates as evidenced by a relationship between photosynthesis rate and land-use.

McMurdo Dry Valleys Chlorophyll-A Concentrations in Lake Hoare Benthic Mats 1996-97

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, the growth of benthic cyanobacteria-dominated mats in the lakes have been monitored. This dataset shows chlorophyll-a levels associated with the benthic mats. Values are provided for various depths of Lake Hoare during the 1996-97 field season, both with and without correction for phaeopigments.

Benthic Chlorophyll and Macroalgae on an Experimentally-manipulated Tidal Flat on the Virginia Coast, 2016-2017

In 2016 a Before-After-Control-Impact experimental design was used to test if the removal of macroalgae from a heavily vegetated mudflat would result in an increase in MPB biomass (Smith 2002). Data Table 1 (BCL_BACIexpa.csv):Benthic chlorophyll samples collected from mudflat where experimental macroalgal removal was conducted. Samples collected haphazardly from 3500 m^2 plots. Sediment cores were 1 cm inner diameter and 2 cm deep. Data Table 2 (BCL_MAMPBa.csv):Survey data where macroalgal mats were sampled and sediment beneath mats sampled for benthic chlorophyll. This data table contains benthic chlorophyll data. Corresponding macroalgal mass data found in MAmass_MAMPBa.csv. Sediment cores were 1 cm inner diameter and 2 cm deep. Three subsamples taken (A,B,C). Data Table 3 (MAmass_MAMPBa.csv): Survey data where macroalgal mats were sampled and sediment beneath mats sampled for benthic chlorophyll. This data table contains macroalgal mass data. Corresponding chlorophyll data found in BCL_MAMPBa.csv
