Lignin biorefinery experimental optimization using BOSS

This dataset was employed in the manuscript:

[1] Löfgren J, Tarasov D, Koitto T, Rinke P, Balakshin M, Todorović M.
Machine Learning Optimization of Lignin Properties in Green Biorefineries.
ChemRxiv. Cambridge: Cambridge Open Engage; 2022.

This dataset contains the results of optimizing the green AquaSolv Omni biorefinery concept using the Bayesian optimization code BOSS. The input data represents the experimental processing conditions for each sample, namely the reactor temperature and P-factor (reaction severity). For each sample, the lignin yield was measured and the number of ß-O-4 linkages, ratio of syringyl and guaiacyl units, and total carbohydrate content were quantified using a 2D NMR HSQC method. The lignin yield is given in weight percent of the original biomass and the NMR-quantified moieties are measured in terms of number of units per 100 aromatic (Ar) units.

The data found in this record comes in two different versions: one for the Combined Acquisitions (CA) and one for the Pure Acquisitions (PA) strategy described in [1]. For each strategy, there is one data file for the training data and one for the test data.

For additional details on the experimental processing and Bayesian optimization, please refer to [1].

Enzymatic Cascade for the Synthesis of 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid in Biphasic and Microaqueous Conditions: 'Media-Agnostic' Biocatalysts for Biorefineries

5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is produced upon dehydration of C6 sugars in biorefineries. As the product, it remains either in aqueous solutions, or is in situ extracted to an organic medium (biphasic system). For the subsequent oxidation of HMF to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), ‘media-agnostic’ catalysts that can be efficiently used in different conditions, from aqueous to biphasic, and to organic (microaqueous) media, are of interest. Here, the concept of a one-pot biocatalytic cascade for production of FDCA from HMF was reported, using galactose oxidase (GalOx) for the formation of 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), followed by the lipase-mediated peracid oxidation of DFF to FDCA. GalOx maintained its catalytic activity upon exposure to a range of organic solvents with only 1 % (v/v) of water. The oxidation of HMF to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) was successfully established in ethyl acetate-based biphasic or microaqueous systems. To validate the concept, the reaction was conducted at 5 % (v/v) water, and integrated in a cascade where DFF was subsequently oxidized to FDCA in a reaction catalyzed by Candida antarctica lipase B.

Data from: Comparative LCA studies of simulated HMF-biorefineries from maize and miscanthus as an example of first- and second-generation biomass as a tool for process development

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a versatile platform chemical for a fossil free, bio-based chemical industry. HMF can be produced by using fructose as a feedstock. Using edible, first-generation biomass to produce chemicals has been questioned in terms of potential competition with food supply. Second-generation biomass like miscanthus could be an alternative. However, there is a lack of information if second-generation lignocellulosic biomass is a more sustainable feedstock to produce HMF. Therefore, a life cycle assessment was performed in this study to determine the environmental impacts of HMF production from miscanthus and to compare it with HMF from high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). HFCS from either Hungary or Baden-Württemberg (Germany) was considered. Compared to the HFCS biorefineries the miscanthus concept is producing less emissions in all impact categories studied, except land occupation. Overall, the production and usage of second-generation biomass could be especially beneficial in areas where the use of N-fertilizers is restricted. Besides, conclusions for the further development of the on-farm-biorefinery concept were elaborated. For this purpose, process simulations from a previous study were used. Results of the previous study in terms of TEA and the current LCA study in terms of environmental sustainability indicate that the lignin depolymerization unit in the miscanthus biorefinery has to be improved. The scenario without lignin depolymerization performs better in all impact categories. The authors recommend to not further convert the lignin to products like phenol and other aromatic compounds. The results of the contribution analyses show that the major impact in the HMF production is caused by the auxiliary materials in the separation units and the required heat. Further technical development should focus on efficient heat as well as solvent use and solvent recovery. At this point further optimizations will lead to reduced emissions and costs at the same time. The presented data set is the used inventory to model the environmental impacts.

A biorefinery model for the production of oil and biomethane using castor plants

This study investigated the effects of two nitrogen fertilization levels on seed and oil yield, and the biomethane production from castor husks residue. A biological pretreatment using two white rot fungi was adopted to reduce the lignin content of capsule husks and enhance biomethane production. The study aimed to highlight the potential of castor plants as energy crops using a biorefinery approach to produce biodiesel from the oil and biomethane from the residual biomass in order to reduce agricultural waste.

Influence of reaction parameters on the catalytic upgrading of an acetone, butanol and ethanol (ABE) mixture: exploring new routes for modern biorefineries

Here we present a comprehensive study on the effect of reaction parameters on the upgrade of an acetone, butanol and ethanol mixture – key molecules and platform products of great interest within the chemical sector. Using a selected high performing catalyst, Fe/MgO-Al2O3, the variation of temperature, reaction time, catalytic loading and reactant molar ratio have been examined in this reaction. This work is aiming to not only optimise the reaction conditions previously used, but to step towards using less energy, time and material by testing those conditions and analysing the sufficiency of the results. Herein we demonstrate that this reaction is favored at higher temperatures and longer reaction time. Also, we observe that increasing the catalyst loading had a positive effect on the product yields, while reactant ratios have shown to produce varied results due to the role of each reactant in the complex reaction network. In line with the aim of reducing energy and costs, this work showcases that the products from the upgrading route have significantly higher market value than the reactants, highlighting this process represents an appealing route to be implemented in modern biorefineries.
