Effect of Prey Availability on Sarracenia Purpurea Stoichiometry at Belvidere Bog, Vermont 2002

The carnivorous pitcher plant Sarracenia purpurea receives nutrients from both captured prey and atmospheric deposition, making it a good subject for the study of ecological stoichiometry and nutrient limitation. We added prey in a manipulative field experiment and measured nutrient accumulation in pitcher-plant tissue and pitcher liquid, as well as changes in plant morphology, growth, and photosynthetic rate. Prey addition had no effect on traditional measures of nutrient limitation (leaf morphology, growth, or photosynthetic rate). However, stoichiometric measures of nutrient limitation were affected, as the concentration of both N and P in the leaf tissue increased with the addition of prey. Pitcher fluid pH and nitrate concentration did not vary among treatments, although dissolved oxygen levels decreased and ammonia levels increased with prey addition. Ratios of N:P, N:K, and K:P in pitcher-plant tissues suggest that prey additions shifted these carnivorous plants from P limitation under ambient conditions to N limitation with the addition of prey.

Stoichiometry of Bogs and Bog Plants in Massachusetts and Vermont 2002

Geographic trends in surface water chemistry and leaf tissue nutrients may reflect gradients of nutrient limitation and broad-scale anthropogenic inputs. In 24 bogs and poor fens in Massachusetts and Vermont, we measured nutrient and metal concentrations in pore-water and in leaf tissues of three common bog plants – leather leaf (Chamaedaphne calyculata), northern pitcher plant (Sarracenia purpurea), and peat moss (Sphagnum spp.). The concentrations of N, P, and K were low in leaf tissues of all three plant genera, as were the concentrations of many trace heavy metals, including Cr, Cu, Co, Cd, Mo, and Pb. Stoichiometric ratios of macronutrients (N:P, P:K, and N:K) in plant leaves suggested that plant growth in the sampled bogs was limited by P, or was co-limited by all three macronutrients. N:P and N:K nutrient ratios of Sarracenia purpurea and Sphagnum spp. increased toward the northwest and with elevation, but stoichiometric ratios of Chamaedaphne calyculata did not show any clear geographic trends. A principal components analysis revealed additional distinct differences among the three plant genera in their nutrient and metal concentrations. Furthermore, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), Cu, Mg, NO3, Al, and K in porewater increased from the northwest (northwestern Vermont) to the southeast (Cape Cod and eastern Massachusetts near Boston), a gradient of increasing human population density and urbanization. In contrast, pore-water concentrations of SO4 and Al were highest in the western sites, and SO4 concentrations increased with elevations. These patterns may reflect atmospheric inputs from the Ohio River Valley leading to increased acidic deposition, causing Al to be leached from soils. Because bogs are naturally low in nutrients and do not receive substantial inputs from surrounding groundwater, the chemical signatures and nutrient stoichiometry of specific bog plant species or genera may provide useful indicators for assessing

Seed Dispersal and Seedling Establishment of Sarracenia Purpurea at Hawley Bog, MA 1998-1999

Plant ecologists continue to grapple with Reid’s paradox, the observation that dispersal distances of most herbs and trees are too limited to account for their recolonization of northern latitudes following glacial recession. As global climate changes and natural habitats become increasingly fragmented, understanding patterns of seed dispersal and the potential for long-distance colonization takes on new importance. We studied the dispersal and establishment of the northern pitcher plant Sarracenia purpurea, which grows commonly in isolated bogs throughout Canada and eastern North America. Median dispersal distance of S. purpurea is only 5 cm, which is insufficient to explain its occurrence throughout formerly glaciated regions of North America. Establishment probability of seeds in the field is approximately 5%, and juveniles are normally found clustered around adult plants. The large-scale population genetic structure of this species can be accounted for by rare long-distance dispersal events, but its predictable occurrence in isolated habitats requires additional explanation. Reid’s paradox remains an open question, and predicting long-range colonization into fragmented habitats by species with limited dispersal ability is a novel challenge.

Cedar Bog Lake Water Quality Data

This dataset contains water quality data from multiple locations and dates collected from surface waters of Cedar Bog Lake (CBL) during summers of 2016 -2018. Sampling of biogeochemical and water quality parameters measured include dissolved inorganic and organic carbon, total dissolved nitrogen, total phosphorus, particulate particulate and total dissolved phosphorus, soluble reactive phosphorus, and algal biomass (as chlorophyll a). These data were collected to support research examining energy flow pathways in the lake using stable isotopes, and build long term water data records for the lake as a reference site, given that it is largely protected from direct human impacts. These water quality data enhance previous water quality data available for CBL. The food web analyses project was developed to compare energy flow in CBL food webs between the foundational original studies by Raymond Lindeman in the 1930s to those inferred from stable isotope analyses. The food web project also examined constraints on resource use by consumers imposed by chemical conditions, and explored the potential role of methane as an energy source for consumers. Stable isotope data for food web components, including fish and invertebrates, will be published separately.

Moths, Ants and Pitcher Plants in Bogs at Harvard Forest and Belchertown MA 2007-2013

Ecologists have long recognized that coexistence of interacting species depends on a diversity of separate, but linked habitats. Most models of species coexistence treat these habitat "patches" as unchanging elements of the landscape, but in reality, they are constantly changing in size and shape. The structure and dynamics of the food webs that inhabit them both control and depend on these changes. In this five-year (2006-2011) collaborative project, we are using a combination of extensive field surveys and intensive field experiments to understand how species interactions change the spatial distribution of dynamic habitat patches across the landscape, and to determine how food webs are structured within and among these patches. The experimental system for this five-year research project is the Sarracenia "microecosystem": the northern pitcher-plant Sarracenia purpurea; the unique food web of bacteria, protozoa, rotifers, mites, and fly larvae that live within its rainwater-filled leaves; three species of bog-inhabiting ants that are the primary prey for this carnivorous plant; and larvae of the pitcher-plant moth, Exyra fax, which cut and drain pitchers and remove food web habitat. Results from surveys of bogs in all six New England state and field experiments conducted at bogs at Harvard Forest and Belchertown, Massachusetts will be used to parameterize a simulation model to predict changes in spatial structure of ant, moth, and plant populations, and the structure and composition of the aquatic food web associated with the plant. The instrumented buoy on Sparkling Bog North is equipped with a dissolved oxygen sensor, a thermistor chain, and meteorological sensors that provide fundamental information on lake thermal structure, weather conditions, and lake metabolism. Data are usually collected either at 1 minute or 10 minute intervals. The D-Opto dissolved oxygen sensor is 0.5m from the lake surface, thermistors are at the surface, at 0.25 m and at every .5 m from 0.5 m to 4.5 m, and meteorological sensors measure wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, and air temperature. The buoy is also equipped with a CO2 monitor and a YSI AutoProfiler that measures several parameters including dissolved oxygen, water temperature, conductivity, pH, ORP, turbulence and chlorophyll-a. After correcting for flux to or from the atmosphere and vertical mixing within the water column, high frequency measurements of dissolved gases such as carbon dioxide and oxygen can be used to estimate gross primary productivity, respiration, and net ecosystem productivity, the basic components of whole lake metabolism. Snow Manipulation Greenhouse Gas Measurements at South Sparkling and Trout Bog 2020-2021

To investigate the effect of a winter with decreased snow cover on greenhouse gas emissions, we experimentally removed snowfall from a small dystrophic lake in northern Wisconsin. As a comparative study, we were able to explore the role of light in under-ice gas dynamics and spring emissions in dimictic lakes. This dataset contains greenhouse gas and temperature/dissolved oxygen profile data collected on South Sparkling and Trout Bog during the winter of 2020 through the winter of 2021. Data were collected between 09 January 2020 and 13 April 2021 in the deep hole of both bogs. Dissolved greenhouse gas concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane were measured using the headspace equilibrium method.

Indicative distribution map for Ecosystem Functional Group TF1.6 Boreal, temperate and montane peat bogs

<p>This archive contains indicative distribution maps and profiles for <strong>TF1.6 Boreal, temperate and montane peat bogs</strong>, a ecosystem functional group (EFG, level 3) of the <a href="https://global-ecosystems.org/">IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology</a> (v2.0). Please refer to Keith <em>et al.</em> (2020) for details.</p> <p>The descriptive profiles provide brief summaries of key ecological traits and processes, maps are indicative of global distribution patterns, and are not intended to represent fine-scale patterns. The maps show areas of the world containing major (value of 1, coloured red) or minor occurrences (value of 2, coloured yellow) of each ecosystem functional group. Minor occurrences are areas where an ecosystem functional group is scattered in patches within matrices of other ecosystem functional groups or where they occur in substantial areas, but only within a segment of a larger region. Given bounds of resolution and accuracy of source data, the maps should be used to query which EFG are likely to occur within areas, rather than which occur at particular point locations. Detailed methods and references for the maps are included in the profile (xml format).</p>

Hourly and daily averages are provided for the met data, while hourly averages are provided for the dissolved oxygen and light data. To accommodate the under-ice deployments, sensor depths vary somewhat year-to-year. Light data is collected with HOBO pendant light and temperature sensors. The make of the dissolved oxygen sensor has changed over the years: YSI (2005), D-Opto (2006-2014), and PME miniDOT (2015-present).

Alberta Bog Net Nitrogen Mineralization, 2013-2015

Alberta bogs are subject to periodic wildfire. Although these bogs have persisted under low atmospheric nitrogen deposition (less than 2 kg N/ha/yr), nitrogen deposition in northern Alberta is increasing due to ongoing oil sands development. This study examined how time since fire and experimental N deposition affects nitrogen mineralization in near-surface bog peat. Net nitrogen mineralization (ammonification, nitrification, dissolved organic N production) was quantified using the buried bag technique in 5 Alberta bogs differing in time since fire. At each site, 24 2.4 _ 4.8 m plots were established, with 6 replicate plots receiving one of four N addition treatments: controls (receiving no water or N), H2O controls (receiving water, but no N; 0 kg N ha-1 yr-1), and 10 and 20 kg N ha-1 yr-1, applied as NH4NO3 dissolved in 15 L of H2O and applied via backpack sprayer eight times during each summer field season. We established plots and began N additions in 2011 at the Utikuma Bog site and in 2013 for the other four sites. Marcell Experimental Forest biweekly bog frost depth, 1985 - ongoing

This dataset contains frost depth data collected every two weeks in two peatlands instrumented for hydrologic monitoring at the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) from 1985–ongoing, only from February until the end of frost during Spring. The variables measured are depth to frost layer, frost thickness, and frost occurrence as percent of area. The three measurements provide information on the depth, duration, and extent of a frost layer. The Marcell Experimental Forest in Itasca County, Minnesota is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station, and was formally established in 1962 to study the ecology and hydrology of peatlands.
