Dataset for combined influences of sources and atmospheric bleaching on light absorption of water-soluble brown carbon aerosols

<p>This dataset provides the mass-absorption cross section at 365 nm and the corresponding absorption &Aring;ngstr&ouml;m exponent, carbon isotope (13C and 14C) signature of water-soluble organic carbon, and OC, EC and WS-BrC concentration for aerosol samples collected in East Asia. The PM2.5 samples were collected simultaneously during the winter period (January 2014) from the representative hotspot regions of BrC emissions in E. Asia, including in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) area, Yangtze River Delta (YRD), Pearl River Delta (PRD), Sichuan (SC) province and SE Yellow Sea regional receptor site &mdash; the Korea Climate Observatory at Gosan (KCOG). The earlier published data in E. and S. Constraining light absorption of brown carbon in China and implications for aerosol direct radiative effect

<p><span>B</span><span>rown carbon (</span><span>BrC) in China is of great interest to the regional and global climate due to its strong absorption of sunlight. However, </span><span>the contribution of BrC to total </span><span>carbonaceous </span><span>aerosol light absorption and its direct radiative effects (DRE) in China remains largely uncertain. To better assess its climate impact in China, we develop an explicit BrC scheme and implement it in a global climate model, which includes optical parameters of primary BrC derived from local measurements, secondary BrC absorption, and a photobleaching parameterization of BrC. By comparing with multi-type observational data, we find that with the implementation of this scheme, the model captures the seasonal variations of BrC light absorption well in China. The model estimates that </span><span>BrC contributes </span><span>19</span><span>% and </span><span>12</span><span>% to the total light absorption of carbonaceous aerosol in China in winter and summer, resulting in 0.</span><span>110</span><span> W m<sup>-2</sup> and 0.</span><span>205</span><span> W m<sup>-2</sup> of DRE, respectively.<span> </span></span></p>

A new method for eliminating dust effects when quantifying the light absorption properties of brown carbon

<p>Accurate quantification of the absorption properties of brown carbon (BrC) aerosols is crucial to assess the Earth-atmosphere radiative impacts of BrC. However, the BrC absorption properties were often misestimated in field observations, due to neglecting the contribution of dust absorption. This study solved this problem by coupling a method for calculating the dust concentration into the traditional model for quantifying BrC absorption. The results show that dust absorption was up to 16.8% of the sum of BrC and dust absorption in northwestern China. The potential contribution of dust to the sum of BrC and dust absorption was significantly higher in the Asia-located studies (0.4&minus;16.8%) than in the Americas-located (&lt;1.2%) and Europe-located (&lt;2.3%) studies. This work underscores the necessity of eliminating the negative effect of dust in BrC quantitative model. It prompts us to revisit the BrC absorption properties resolved by previous studies, especially in dust-influenced areas such as Asia.</p> <p>The data file contains data from the AE31 aethalometer, aerodynamic particle sizer spectrometer (APS), tapered element oscillating microbalance machine (TEOM), and high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) used in this study, as well as data from each figure in this study.</p>
